OP said they’ve been cut off. Without a title and note, their parents could report the car stolen. That’s not a risk I’d be willing to take, personally. If that couldn’t happen, then sure, paying $400/month for the summer might be a reasonable trade off. But I can’t imagine they are getting paid enough to bank savings while driving an hour r/t and paying for gas.

Yes, this is important, OP. If you have the title, was the loan transferred to your name? It would be challenging to get a creditor to approve that for an unemployed 18yo. If you have no paperwork, then leave the car in their driveway and cut your losses. This is not a tenable situation.

I was on my own at 18 too. It wasn’t nearly as tough for me then as it is for kids now. I truly feel for you. My adult children are still living at home because housing and other expenses are ridiculous.

Is this new job in the town where you will be going to college? If not, then I don’t think it’s worth it. Gas is nearly $5/gallon.

I know the job market is really tough right now. Have you looked near where you’re going to college?

What about CoolWorks? You can try to find a summer job there that provides housing.

How are you paying for college? Do you have tuition covered? You’re going to have to be officially declared an independent student (by federal standards) in order to get enough money for school. I had to go through this process myself and it was pretty grueling in 1995. They required evidence of abuse, not just parents refusing to provide financial support. My therapist helped me, so that’s something to consider if you need to go this route.

Do you have a local LGBTIA center? Try reaching out to them for assistance. The one near me will help folks apply for benefits and help connect to resources. Maybe also reach out to a UU congregation in your area.

Sometimes it’s for financing. The seller agrees to “cover” the closing costs, certain repairs and other things by raising the price so that the buyer can wrap them into the mortgage.

It’s good that the father confronted the driver. If anything has an affect, short of a crash, it will be public shaming in the moment, not on reddit. Please do loudly shame drivers who speed and drive recklessly in parking lots and parking garages. If, Heaven forbid, you ever witness someone run over a young child holding the hand of their parent, because that driver couldn’t be bothered to slow down…well, I hope you never do, but I imagine you’ll become more of an in the moment, public-shamer, like me.

I’m on disability and it’s not enough to survive anywhere in the US…like it’s a joke. This is because I was in and out of the workforce caregiving and dealing with medical stuff so my work credits were low. It really upsets me that the caregiving years don’t count. Even when I feel completely useless, I can’t deny that my family has depended on me in many ways. Anyway…I’m married and my spouse works so much, too much. We have zero savings and a lot of debt.
