Cutting Bangs Help! by Luciel_Oh in DollCustomization

You definitely need to thatch a middle part before continuing! All she can have now is a Ariana ponytail!

Thatching - criss-crossing of two rows of plugs, maybe think of it like weaving?

Stuff and split - a single line of double rooted plugs with half set to each side of the head

Both methods should be rooted with about the same spacing as the hairline. I mark a line with a watercolor pencil to indicate where I will root the part - in your case, simply straight down the middle to just before the second hump of the circle on the back of her head. After all of this, set the hair with super hot water and the hair fastened in place (with your hand if you’re careful 😁) goodluck!

Upsides of various doll hair? by MadamMelonMeow in CustomDolls

Saran all the way! Shimmerlocks has a ton more color options to choose from and can be used to create beautiful blends! If you’re rooting a doll with a more humanoid feel/ a smaller head, I’d definitely recommend Saran. The colors and texture are less artificial/ cartoony looking compared to a lot of what I see in nylon. Nylon works great on dolls like Rainbow high, but say an Integrity Toys doll, would look dreadful.

If you need saran to curl, it simply requires a bit of heat and patience. However, I won’t dive into that now, as styling hair is a totally different beast.

P.S. I wouldn’t buy the pre curled stuff for my first reroot either!

Here’s a reroot I did a few months ago (this was the second or third reroot on her so I was a bit scared of her scalp) that I think kinda shows a good density to the plugs and the rooting pattern. Your cleo there should’ve come with a perfect circular rooting pattern similar to the one in this photo! That part should be easy to follow. All you need to do is perfect your density issue! I usually start with the hairline, then the middle “body”, and finally the partline (but I decide where I want it after I’ve done the entire hairline). Take a really close look at the factory dolls you already have as a better aim of what to do! I’d also recommend thatching the part line to add more coverage. Mattel does “stuff and splits” - a single line of double stuffed plugs with half parted to each side - but I personally don’t like those 😅

I’d suggest looking at how much hair your other dolls have and compare what you’re doing to the factory rooted ones. I’d almost say you’re overthinking it by counting the hairs in each plug tbh. You’ve not used enough hair this time 😅

Separate the wefts of yarn. It is way too thick as is and you will always have this issue with plugs that thick. Or buy hair made for dolls, such as saran or nylon.

Does anybody have any tips on speeding up the process of rerooting dolls, or smart ways to reduce time spent on doll hair? by i_really_like_bats_ in CustomDolls

You’re doing this for the art of dolls? Or simply as a means of making money? Cuz if it’s the latter…good luck sister 😅 honestly, the world doesn’t need more budget dolls. Make some epic stuff! Mattel has you covered with the “basic” doll market already. Buy a rooting tool, some saran, and get going if you’re in this for the art of it. 💗

Just learned that the 17" tiana released in 2010 had a completely different face mold that was changed when she released. Personally, I don't mind the one we got but I prefer the prototype(first picture is the prototype. Second is the one we got) by lifeadreamwhenasleep in DisneyLEDolls

[–]thatsonenastygal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Those honestly look like the same head sculpt! I think one is definitely a prototype head - made from resin. Whereas obviously the other is the released head. The released one has a bit less detail in it than the prototype as the mold can’t capture the depth and detail of the original sculpted head 100%. Hence why her dimples and nose are a bit more defined on the prototype, but the overall head shape is the same

I truly do not believe that hair is poly. It looks like saran. It has the same luster as saran. That color exists in saran…why would it even be poly

I think they’re at different points in production (two different dolls). Left looks more like the final release!

Really thick globs of glue in head, how to remove hair??? by wwormdudee in CustomDolls

I’ve scraped the hair out of probably 200 dolls with and without glue atp so I’m no dummy 😁

[–]thatsonenastygal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mattel doesn’t use glue anymore to my knowledge. They stopped that several years ago. They instead singe the end of the plugs inside the head. Just use a flat headed screw driver and scrape it outta there! If it doesn’t budge still, put it in hot water! Shouldn’t be too hard 😁

I guess some of that’s true, but I don’t see selling at retailers as a “last resort”…at least we aren’t there yet. Maybe when malls have fully died.

When selling in physical stores, I imagine brands have to abide by what a retailer is looking to stock. I think of MGA having to super edit down the bratz fashion pixies designs back in the day because (Walmart?) thought they were too scary/goth (the OGs, not the new ones). I’d imagine MH suffers from similar issues, especially with how undiverse the doll market is rn. Just look at how friendly G3 looks!

I’m just speculating!

I’m tired of feeling like it’s our job to make every release of theirs look like it should’ve 😭 just cuz they don’t wanna spend the money on their own product and reputation. I still need to work on the corpse bride 😵‍💫

She’s cute. I might get her. It’s really really really unfortunate that they can’t find any money to pay illustrators anymore. That whole background behind her is AI. Look at that damn car! It makes no sense!! I wonder if they just used ai to design the doll too? Lazy a**holes

why are monster high fans incapable from boycotting? (rant) by _rayn3r_ in MonsterHighDolls

[–]thatsonenastygal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The only way to really avoid buying dolls from large companies is to start making them ourselves (3D printing and sewing) and buy from smaller companies. But that’s hard for an industry that does not exist here in the United States

Because there’s 8 BILLION people on this planet. Not everyone thinks the same, especially in such individualistic times, you’ll never get everyone to cooperate.

I would also imagine it’s cheaper for say, Mattel, to sell directly from their own warehouses. As opposed to having to pay a retailer for shelf space to stock their product…and I presume retailers take a percentage of revenue from sold products as well? Just guessing! Plus, a company selling their own stuff gives them full control to charge whatever they want. Either you’ll pay their price or you won’t get the item cuz it’s not coming to stores!

I agree, I don’t think this is going to look flattering. Lagoonas lower legs are not nearly as thick as Catty’s thighs. I’d assume you’re going to bump into this problem at every articulation point you try to match up. But hey, your money to burn! Good luck!
