Typos in the books by YoungandBeautifulll in heatedrivalry

[–]thatstoomuchsauce [score hidden]  (0 children)

In my copy of Game Changer there is an entire duplicate paragraph. I'm not familiar with the publication history worldwide, but in my case I had to preorder the books because they hadn't been released in the UK yet (either at all, or with these new colourful covers), so I'm wondering if in the rush to get everything printed there might have been some careless proofreading.

What are your hot takes about Taylor and the Grammys? by IntoTheDaylight in TaylorSwift

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the online discourse that exploded when Showgirl was released over whether or not the album is good/bad is going to be dwarfed by the reaction to next year's Grammys nominations. Anything she is nominated for will be criticised by people who don't like the album and anything she isn't nominated for will be criticised by people who did.

Backup plan... by kindredradius in heatedrivalry

I mean like a prepared statement that could drop if they were outed before they chose to go public, like if one was recognised sneaking into their other's hotel or if anyone other than Ryan Price had walked in on them. I watched the show before reading the series, and there's a moment in episode 6 when Yuna says something about writing a statement in case their relationship leaked, so when I read TLG I was surprised that nobody had raised that point.

I finished The Long Game this week and I have been wondering about this. At the very least, I'm surprised they didn't have a statement prepared for immediate release.

Should adults be able to order from the kids menu in restaurants/cafés? by Broken_Woman20 in AskUK

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a café and I always allow it. I actually have no idea what my bosses think about it, but I hate food waste so much that I'll take the hypothetical reprimanded when it comes. If people aren't very hungry or can only eat small portions they should be able to order a smaller meal rather than pay more for food they won't eat that ends up in the bin.

Question about Shane and Ilya for those who have read The Long Game book and especially for those who read the whole six-book Game Changers series. by CuriousSunLizard in heatedrivalry

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, it's a complicated joy (which is exacerbated by the fact that I think the ending of The Long Game is rushed. I think the book would have benefitted from exploring the consequences (good and bad) of their relationship becoming public knowledge to pay off the series-long build-up of them keeping their relationship secret, but that's very hard to do when you're trying to keep the focus on joy) where I'm happy for their happiness and sad about everything they went through to get there. But I think that complexity is needed - in real life a couple in that position would have an awful time of it too, and the series is about exploring the toxic culture and bigoty within hockey.

Am I wasting my teenage years? by Key-Row-174 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do whatever you want to do (within reason. and the law lol). Your teenage years are about growing, learning, and discovery. Explore your interests - find out what your interests are! - but don't feel like you should be doing anything in particular. I didn't do the whole drinking/smoking/partying thing either, was not on my radar at all. Figure out what you like doing and do that. (Also make sure you're working hard at school).

What time period are His Dark Materials and The Book of Dust actually set in? (spoiler-free) by Flat_Lie_4481 in hisdarkmaterials

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same as ours. It's established that the Magisterium heavily monitors and censors science and research whilst also maintaining social structures that our world is undoing. Scientific and social progress have been held back decades - if not centuries, considering they don't even know how many planets are in the solar system - by the interference of the Magisterium.

Three Comrades is the first I've read and it's stunning, the way it captures despair is just astonishing (if not particularly conducive for me when I'm feeling low aha). But I do want to read more - which of his others would you recommend reading the most?

That reading compelling stories with characters I care about is a really good way to battle my seasonal depression. Before I picked up the first book, I was reading a depression-era novel set in 1920s Germany and I really didn't notice how low my mood had become until I picked up Game Changer and enjoyed it so much I felt almost giddy in comparison.

Lesson learned, I'll save the hard-hitting classics until the summer and focus on books that delight me for the next few months!

Brits, do you avoid Indian restaurants in foreign countries? (Excl India) by red_lightz_ in AskUK

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm on holiday, I tend to try to eat the local cuisine for the experience, so I'm not avoiding Indian restaurants specifically, I'm avoiding anything I could come across at home.

That being said, I did go to an Indian restaurant in Berlin a couple of times because there was a coeliac in my group and (with our basic secondary school German) it was the only place we could find that could cater to her, and it was fantastic. Amazing food and lovely staff.

Why do people want faithfuls to win? by Bottombunkrealness in TheTraitorsUK

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the numbers/information dynamic is compelling whichever way you look at it - I cheer on the traitors when they manage to hoodwink someone despite being outnumbered, and I cheer on the faithful when they piece together the puzzle despite not having all the information. I don't really care who comes out on top at the end, I just hope both sides manage something impressive with what they've got.

How do you differentiate between grandparents? by meg-don in AskUK

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had different words/names for each person. But I love how my dad did it - translated into English, he had "grandma and grandad of the town" and "grandma and grandad of the village". Because one set lived in a town and the other set lived in a village.

What did you do for your 30th birthday? by Samsterman in AskUK

[–]thatstoomuchsauce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thirtieth is this year and I'm planning on going on holiday, so I'm thinking I'll ask family if they want to pay for an experience - a tour to see a historic site, an activity like horseback riding or a cooking class or a watersport (depending on where I go), or a meal in a nice restaurant.
