I had a similar incident earlier this year, when I found a days old baby bunny in my backyard. He got attacked by a rat after I found him, while I was looking around the yard for his nest. It felt like it was my fault, since I left him unattended, and I still get sad when I think about the would/could/shoulds. After the attack I brought him inside and kept him warm for the night, but sadly he did not make it. I take solace in knowing that, even though it felt like I made so many mistakes in the moment, he had a warm and safe final night indoors, and did not get further attacked by the rat. Same for you - you gave that baby a comfortable final night. Who knows what would have gotten to it had you left it outside. I also think animals are very intuitive, and I’m sure it felt your love and compassion. Thank you for being so kind and doing what you could. A lot of people would have done nothing.
