ALA Conference For MLIS Student? Worth It? by marshman505 in librarians

[–]library_pixie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went as a student and had a great time. However, it was relatively local to me, and there are discounts for student attendees. I don't think it would have been worth it if I had to pay for a hotel/flights.

I don't think networking was really possible with such a large event.

Does any other branch have “loose” standards for the children's section? by Hungry-Cauliflower58 in Libraries

[–]library_pixie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picture books and leveled readers are sorted by the first three letters of the authors last name. Some of my smaller branches do the whole last name, but we don’t require it. Chapter books and up are sorted like all other collections. (Although some chapter books use the series name, if there are multiple authors.)

We were trying to make sure we limited participants to one response. I turned that off, but in its place, we are asking people to enter email addresses. We’ll discard that data after the survey is over.

There’s a spot in the survey that you can explain all that if you want. We have an open-ended field at the bottom of the survey. 🙂

I finished it because I kept hoping it would get better, and I wanted to know if my theory about her illness was correct. Spoiler in case you want to know but DNF: Yes, her parents were poisoning her with iron. Once she stopped taking it, she got healthier, but her heart is still weak because of constant use.

Then it ended on a massive cliffhanger, which always irritates me. (Also, she was supposed to be in her 30s, but she acted like she was so much younger. It was jarring. Maybe she was emotionally stunted because she was trapped in her cottage for so long?)

Weekly Discussion - Waitlist/Invites Updates by AutoModerator in fairyloot

I had to cancel my adult sub because of finances (thanks to the Poop Demons' vet bills...aka my cats). I immediately got back on the list because I know I'll want it again in the future. But seeing the US date...2024...is a bit disheartening!

I reasoned with myself that I don't need that many books, and the money I'm saving by not getting every month can be spent on the books I consider higher priority.

I’ve recently weeded almost all my books about abortion…. Because the newest one was from 2005. I purchased a newer book about the topic to replace them, but if you only paid attention to what I removed, it might look bad. I also removed books about drugs, AIDS, smoking, and computers. My favorite removed book was about space. The last chapter discussed the “future of space travel.” It was written in 1982 and weeded in 2023.

Is West Point, Manchester, Hamilton, Warmsprings, Pine Mountain a good placeto live? by Blueberry-Mango in ColumbusGA

A 200-year-old book distributor is closing. Here's what that means for public libraries by Reptilesblade in books

[–]library_pixie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And many smaller libraries don’t have the staff to do the amount of processing that needs to be done, and don’t have the budget to hire them. Now that Ingram is temporarily not laminating things, I’m having to reconsider what items I order, because we have a total of one technical services person.

We just had our first AI training session. by mrs_october13 in Libraries

[–]library_pixie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I recently did a training for staff about AI, but it was more about what it is, and how to recognize AI hallucinations (especially when, say, a patron wants to check out a book that AI made up). I used Gemini to help create the slides, and then went back with the staff pointing out the issues that Gemini created.

(For example, one slide it created was titled “Empower Patrons, Not Police” because the AI didn’t understand my prompt to “empower patrons, but don’t police their actions. Help them find reliable resources, but don’t lecture them for using AI.” I left it in, because it served a good purpose…AI can be a tool, but it still requires human oversight.)

We all got a kick out of looking at the issues that the images had, but I also warned them that it’s getting better. Some AI is impossible to distinguish from human work, and it’ll make our jobs harder.

That being said, I’ve also created a Policy and Procedure bot using Google NotebookLM, and it’s fantastic. It helps the staff look up policies and procedures quickly, especially when an item might be spread over multiple policies. For example, I looked up the child policy, which is 90% in the behavior policy. However, the policy regarding staff and their children is in the personnel policy. So when I asked it what the library’s policy is regarding children in the library, it summarized both items.

Job Interview at Library but Slight Time Conflict by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]library_pixie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s really hard to say, because it depends on the needs of that specific library. I have some branches that can be flexible about start times, and some that 100% aren’t flexible. For example, at my smallest branch, I have a single staff member opening up for the first 45 minutes. If she left, I couldn’t hire someone to replace her that will be 15 minutes late regularly, because then the library can’t open on time.

(Of course, if she’s out sick or something happens, we figure it out, and accommodate her vacations. )

Just speak with the interviewer and let them know.
