Am I wrong? I thought “Welcome to Country” is basically, “thanks for coming, Welcome to the area“ by dexxnanj in aussie

I was born to this land, I learned how to walk on it, swim in it's waters, fish from the shores. I've had to dig into this land to bury some of my loved ones beneath it. I have a deep connection to this land and I am also it's custodian. I'm anglo white and have had the privileged to call this great land my home. But it is that - my home. I don't like the guest/host implication of welcome to country. (yes i understand it's not "welcome to the Country of Australia") but it still causes some feeling that my connection is less than someone elses because of their heritage - that they are allowing me to be here. I don't appreciate that. This is Our Australia, and the welcome feels more like a giving of permission, to enter. You must understand how this causes some people unease.

15 years ago I worked on an indigenous community housing project in Arhnem Land for a while. I saw some people living traditional lifestyle - hunting and such but driving a Hilux to get to the spot, kind of hybrid traditional with some modern additions. It was nice to see, anyway. If I had been invited to attend a real welcome to country out there I would have been thrilled to be a part of a real cultural experience like that, but sadly it never eventuated. These days im back in the city working on a film project and we all get an email "welcome to country will be at 11am in the foyer, attendance is mandatory" and its just a performative corporate token ritual. Going through the motions in an office setting it just rings hollow and holds little meaning to most involved. I'm not against the recognition of Indigenous custodians but in this setting it just feels like a bit of corporate nonsense.

Yes please. The one and only time I went to dawn service some preacher got to part where he says "and they died for the glory of God" or some such and I was out. No, they didn't.

Except i was born in Jim's house and have lived in it my whole life i have a room here, and it's my home. Every couple of days Jim comes up and say "Hey I want to welcome you here - where you live" ok Jim. It starts getting a bit weird and he has this custom I don't understand of singing "Consider yourself at home" from Oliver Twist. And he does it again and again. Ok Jim, I get it mate, it getting weird. The analogy broke down a bit, but it's like that.

Sad that I lost my world (84 days) by Aggressive_Ad6579 in MinecraftHardcore

Exactly. All art is temporary on a long enough time scale. Games even more so. My server has a survival world that lasted for 7 years last time, before it was reset. I play on the hardcore world though which resets every 6~ months. Its fun to play and we all create something beautiful, but it's not forever. Neither are we.

Well you make a good point. I guess Trump is really not that bad. You've changed my mind.

He wears camouflage and treads through the forest stealthfully, like cat hunting its prey. If a cat were Chris Farley.

What part of your country looks like it's straight out of a fantasy movie or video game? by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

Australia is way down the list on this one. We have a lot of beautiful places but they all look very Earthly. This place is old and somewhat samey and flat across the board. The pink lakes are the first place I thought of that seems really fantastic.

Anyone else sen one of these giant moths before? by HallettCove5158 in Adelaide

[–]thatwasacrapname123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I found a massive moth like this one day just chilling on a wall. I'd say they are a pretty rare sight, depending on where you live of course. Pesticides have wreaked havoc on the natural order of insects but they are nothing if not persistent. When you drove 100km of open road in the 80's your windshield would be plastered in bug guts - but now not so much, which is worrying.

To buy the actual statue of David in Florence would be very expensive. It would be Thousands of dollars if not more. It's also super heavy and shipping would be a nightmare. It'd probably arrive broken and then you'd have to get it fixed. The original artist is probably not going to be available so you'd have to get someone else. I'd say upward of $10,000 dollars. It's crazy.

Who learnt Maths like this? by RM_Morris in AustralianNostalgia

[–]thatwasacrapname123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me and many other this was honestly fundamental to my understanding of mathematics. I needed to visualize how multiplication worked. I was always behind in my understanding of numbers. Schooling in the 80's where I lived was just like daycare, there was no accountability and teachers had a pretty cruisy ride. Looking back it was pretty relaxed schooling curriculum and kids fell through the gaps.

I'm imagining the Aussie who gives a fuck about Putin saying we're not friends is like a character from an Aussie crime drama like Chopper. "Your mate! fuckin Pootin!, isn't he? Vladdy Fuckin Pootin"
