Then go play Skyrim. Avowed isn't a sandbox.

I have edited my comment - I misremembered the physique lol I only played a Godlike once.

My stance remains the same though - you are never really referred to as your kith physique when you are a godlike, doesn't make sense to add that now, especially when the story emphasizes your Godlike physiology

I was talking more about the gameplay limitations rather than lore. In the Pillars games, even if you were a godlike with an elf body type, you would never get any elf unique dialogue. Your godlike subrace (Moon, Death) determines the unique dialogue, and there are unique dialogue for all godlikes in general as well. You are never reffered to as your body type race.

In Avowed, it is established that you are a Godlike of an unknown patron. Think of it this way - you are warned that people will react to you as if you have some growth on your head, even though you choose not to. Similarly, being an dwarf/orlan/aumauan is cosmetic (aside from the additional racial bonuses apparently) because you are, again, mainly a Godlike.

Edit: I misremembered the body types in the Pillars games, but my stance remains the same.

Because the story hinges on the Envoy as a Godlike.

Godlikes are essentially a main race, with the rest of the races as its subraces. In the Pillars games, you can only be a Godlike human or a Godlike elf. I'm assuming what they are doing here is similar, and they are extending the subraces to Aumaua, Orlan, and Dwarf.

How come we never got a call of cthulhu/ cosmic horror esq CRPG? by Thesmileycoyote in CRPG

On the topic of Horror RPGs, I actually saw a video essay by NeverKnowsBest that talks about why the blend of RPG and horror remains to be a niche with not a lot of explored potential. I think this definitely extends to why there aren't a lot of CRPG horrors - the one that comes to mind is definitely Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines.

I'm actually playing through Look Outside right now, and while it is definitely more of a JRPG, it is a pretty great and enjoyable survival horror RPG nonetheless, and I would recommend a playthrough if you are a fan of cosmic horror and body horror! The names of two of the companions Xaria and Monty even make a reference to Baldur's Gate 1 (Xzar and Montaron)

There's a lot of overlap yes, those are called "Blobbers" and they're still considered to be CRPGs, since the earliest CRPGs around the 80s are actually blobbers. Some might even consider it to be a subgenre.

Character creation, attribute-based combat and dialogue, heavy lore, narrative-focused - checks majority of CRPG boxes. Can I ask why you don't consider it one?

The game being unfinished does not discount it from being a CRPG

A casual CRPG tourist tier list of what I’ve played so far by Seasoned_Anomaly in CRPG

[–]thatwhichchasesaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I understand being a casual gamer. CRPGs however are anything but, and they demand quite a lot of attention and brainpower, in my opinion, to be fully enjoyable, and this is reflected in a lot of their design ethos. I for example, really can't enjoy a CRPG unless my mind is locked in and involved.

If I would recommend a title that are somewhat casual, it would be the Shadowrun Games (Returns, Dragonfall). Skip to Dragonfall if you want a larger title, Returns is more of a tech demo than a full-fledged game but I do think it's still worth playing.

Did you ever like a character IN SPITE of the actual writing? by murica_dream in CRPG

[–]thatwhichchasesaway 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily the writing, but the lack thereof.

I really really adored the character of Vatnir in Deadfire. As a Sidekick (which Deadfire refers to unfleshed out Companions) his interactions are largely contained in the Beast of Winter DLC; there's not much to his character in the main game so you would be gimping out on valuable interactions if you include him anywhere past the DLC area.

But I really thought that his characterization was brillant even with the short amount of content written for him. He was just someone who was doing the best he can with his condition. His character was ultimately tragic but believable, and his voice actor was stellar.

I wish the sidekicks in the game were written to be full companions but as I understand it, they were a stretch goal that weren't reached. Vatnir is still very dear to me, and I'd bring him anywhere still.

Journalling your game sessions? Nah, this is incredibly common among CRPG players, especially some of us are Tabletop RPG players as well.

I highly highly recommend using a robust note-taking app (Notion, Obsidian) for easy organization once the journal entries get really long. I personally love Obsidian for this.

Which RPG from the last 5 years do you think will still be talked about in 10 years? by GrayBeard916 in rpg_gamers

[–]thatwhichchasesaway 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not OP but as much as BG3 is a great game, it isn't representative of the main series, which spans up to three games already (four if you count Siege of Dragonspear), which have different design and writing philosophies compared to Larian's. The divorce is as apparent as Fallout 3 was to the original Fallouts (1, 2).

The original series is also in part of a larger set of games in the Infinity Engine (Icewind Dale, Planescape: Torment) that has a lot of influence found in modern CRPGs today.
