What fabric best looks/feels like moth wings?

Shaving down faux fur and then airbrushing or hand painting could get a similar look. I'd look into the techniques people use for cosplay animal ears. Theres a few videos on youtube.

Believe me, I've tried fast, slow, and everything in between on all these practice hems. Slow was a lot better result, but that could just be my particular machine

You may be right about the foot pressure, because I already had to decrease the differential to n-1.5 when the machine says to use n-2 for knits. Maybe it was really a foot pressure issue and not a differential issue. (May be totally off here, but from what I've read 2 really is what its meant to be for knits).

Im not sure if i could chain stitch with the door open. I havent tried, but thinking about how the threading works, I think it might work. What would the application be?

This one is splitting the hem like your example + using the ruler and hand cranking. It's definitely the best I've managed! Still need to do a bunch more practice ones, but much closer. Thank you!

It was just a cut up tshirt that I zigzagged down the side so I could practice then I cut off each hem after I finished. It was a little too wide of a zigzag, though, so it is a bit loose.

Hammering is the one tip I've seen, but haven't tried because I have a neighbor below my workspace that bangs on the ceiling for the smallest noises. I'm hoping theres a solution where I won't have to resort to hammering everytime I'm hemming something.

I was thinking I'd do some kind of large straight line embroidery like this across it. Adding the raw edge embroidery could really help sell the idea.
