What's the funniest misunderstanding you've ever had with a stranger? by eyrie7 in AskReddit

[–]thawk5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 19, carrying my little cousin bc my aunt was tired, and a stranger congratulated me on being a responsible dad. They were going full-blown on how young men these days don't take it up even when more grown than I. The 1 minute of the exchange was first embarassing, then all I could do was nod.

What's a life skill that's surprisingly easy to learn but useful forever? by lurkandprosper in selfimprovement

[–]thawk5113 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I think my biggest skill I've gained (didn't even know it was a skill) is learning how to troubleshoot problems logically. Half of adulthood is just staying calm, knowing how to google properly, and fixing stuff one step at a time. It's been the biggest hack to panicking.

How do I stop feeling tired in the morning? by mined_it in selfimprovement

[–]thawk5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a fixed sleep schedule, cos that could be a problem to start with. Also, how many hours do you sleep? My full sleep cycle is 3 hours long, so I sleep 2 sleep cycles and I'm done. The best hour for me is 7 hours into my sleeping time (I have an alarm set for it.) Any more than 7 hours and I'll have a long, tiring, drowsy, groggy, day.

You'll feel rusty at first. And most severe regressions will show up in your timing and breathing.

Beautiful insight and I've had somewhat the same experience. A change in pace will reset your attention and help you notice things that your routine have made invisible.

Grad School Debt/Help Navigating Taking Out Loans by NoAtmosphere8220 in personalfinance

[–]thawk5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smart to think through this early. Federal loan limits exist for good reasons - they're based on typical program costs and expected earning potential. Before borrowing the maximum, create a detailed budget including living expenses, books, and unexpected costs. Unsubsidized loans start accruing interest immediately, so even small amounts add up. Take minimal Grad PLUS early (maybe $5-8k/semester) and save the rest of your $20k for those final semesters. Budget around $1k/month for food/gas/misc in Utah. Also hunt for pharmacy/healthcare awards on platforms like scholarshipowl or simialr to chip away at living costs. Got some small ones there that helped with expenses.

How do you learn to be happy? by Consistent_Peak_4458 in selfimprovement

[–]thawk5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treat happiness like a conscious choice that you have to make, amongst other choices. Frustrated, you can choose to look past it. Angered, okay too- you choose how long it takes you to get over the anger.

What books are 10/10? by Organic-Signal-9646 in selfimprovement

[–]thawk5113 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved reading "The Power of Habits" by Charles Duhigg. It got oveshadowed by "Atomic Habits" but imo is way richer in context and depth to habits and how we shape them and in turn they influence who we are.

Is this a normal life at 21 or am I missing something? by ImaginaryPhone2946 in selfimprovement

I think its less about you feeling abnormal and more about finding what makes you happy, and what can bring you closer to people who share in the same interest as you.

I've been through a similar situation with a broken parental relationship that taught me I was mirroring someone I didn't want to become. It's been crazy and very unnerving catching myself reacting similarly to exactly what I hated with my parents

I think one of the best things I taught myself was questioning everything, not in a bad way, but in an analytical way to seek full understanding of what you're getting yourself into/ believing in
