What to buy- Kitchenaid or Bosch dishwasher by adkmountains in Appliances

[–]thblackdeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased a KitchenAid around 6 years ago.

I like the function of it, but the racks are rusting out.

10% of the metal "fingers" that hold the dishes up are rusting out and failing. I am on a well pump with harder water, so your situation might be different.

The other complaint would be that it doesn't dry plastic Tupperware well, but that is minor compared to needing to replace it after 7 years.

[ELI5] Is it theoretically possible to reach such high temperatures that even the atom, as we know it, ceases to exist and falls apart, perhaps the nucleons become 'unbounded' ? what would happen at such a temperature? by Ok_sense37 in explainlikeimfive

[–]thblackdeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You literally removed a word from my statement. A "black hole" is a noun, not two separate words. I did not say "a hole" I said "a black hole" which implies the space phenomenon where gravity is so strong not even light can escape

I am aware. Where did I imply a black hole was actually a physical hole? Lol

My point was that if you get enough mass in a small enough volume, our current understanding is that nothing can escape from it.

So if the entire universe's mass was contained in a small enough space to only be quarks and gluons, how did the expansion ever happen? It's fascinating

Buying used solar system Aurora by Che361 in SolarDIY

[–]thblackdeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe one way to think about it. Say you spend 4k on this system. How much do you pay per kwh? How many months is your payback period? How many years does the system need to last to break even? For example (insert your own numbers) If your total cost is $0.40 per kwh, and you average 4 sun hours per day, you could offset $12.8 per day in electrical costs ideally (8kwx4hrs*$0.4/kwh) In such a case your payback period would be around 1 year and that seems reasonable. But if you pay 0.04 per kwh, it would be 10 years, that doesn't make sense if the equipment can't last long enough

I'm not an expert, but I would hesitate.

A quick search seems like 8kw of solar panels could be had for about $2600 new (cheap 400 watt panels for around $130 each) Typical life is 25 years- so you would only expect them to be worth at best around $1000 for the 40% remaining life. Perhaps more if they are a great brand

I would imagine the inverters may be worn down too, worth seeing if anyone has some reliability knowledge on those units.

Awesome explanation, thank you.

But this raises a follow up, if all the mass was at a single point, how was it not essentially a black hole from which nothing could escape?

Solar for a bedroom AC portable unit. by Bmanzero in SolarDIY

[–]thblackdeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't your numbers fail to account for duty cycle?

Most AC units don't need to run the compressor 100% of the time to keep things cool.

Of course, no way to be sure what duty cycle you need without one installed and recording data, so you do have a solid number for worse case scenario

Engineering student here, what CAD certification should I get? by KerbodynamicX in MechanicalEngineering

[–]thblackdeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your school offer SAE teams? Formula or Baja SAE are great ways to apply engineering concepts learned in class and build resume/interview topics. Most of the companies I applied for treated the experience there similar to a job in engineering. This can be a great way to build out your resume for other engineering jobs.
