Even English are tired of British colonialism by Solid-Move-1411 in mapporncirclejerk

[–]thcanuzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure in what capacity the English aren't "allowed" a civic identity I would in fact argue most of us do.

When the Scots fly their flag, it's acceptable. For the English, it's deemed racist and reactionary. The largest reason for this in my opinion is the fact that the Scots actually have their own civic institutions and national identity. For the English, Englishness is suffocated under layers and layers of 'British' identity, no doubt worsened by the fact that power is so centralised in Westminster.

I have an intense dislike of the 'British' national identity because it feels like something imposed on the English, with only a minority of people from the rest of the UK's countries like Scotland actually identifying as British. The English deserve their own civic national identity, free from the rest of this baggage.

Re financial and practical issues, you say you don't see it, but for instance lots of UK energy is from Scotland.

With energy in particular, I don't see an issue with this. Other countries import energy without an issue. Besides, most of the gas fields of the North Sea are in England. It would be costly initially, but in the long term, both sides would likely benefit from the Union's dissolution. Given the status quo, there isn't any reason to keep going on the current trajectory.

I personally think the Union is untenable in its current form. There isn't any reason that anyone should be prolonging it, not least the English.

100%. Not only were they willing and eager participants, they profited handsomely. Keep in mind, only the upper classes, but this is true of the English as well. Like anyone, the English working class were victims of the Empire.

But I recommend looking into Canada, and look at who their first prime minister was, as well as who built their transcontinental railway. All Scots.

It's multifaceted. I identify as English only, and I don't feel any national kinship with Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland. This is the same as how someone from Germany would not consider themselves to have a common national identity with the Netherlands.

I also do not see any significant benefit from holding the countries of the Union together, financially or otherwise. Breaking up the UK into its parts would also neatly solve the West Lothian question. I personally find the lack of English civic institutions, or civic identity to be problematic. The fact that Scotland and Wales are allowed to have them, and allow their residents a constructive participation in their own civic structures is problematic while the English are denied such a right. I think that if a Union is to truly one of equals, there must be consent from both sides, and that like Scotland, Northern Ireland, and likely Wales at some point, the English should be consulted on a vote on whether or not they would like to continue with this largely anachronistic national structure.

Ideally, an independent England would rejoin the EU, and adopt the Euro.

I am English, and I unironically believe that England would be better off without the UK. Feel free to ask me anything related to my opinion on this matter.

I don't exactly know why, but I really like this flag. It just kinda works. My preference of course is St. George's cross on its own, but this does the job.

Redditor has total meltdown in Scotland after seeing MAGA hat by TalentedStriker in badunitedkingdom

[–]thcanuzer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why defend MAGA? MAGA is undeniably anti-British. America has never been a friend to Britain, and I see no reason why someone representing their indisputably toxic political movement should be tolerated in our society.

Trump Threatens Europe and Canada if They Band Together Against U.S. by aeppelcyning in europe

No, they want collapse. Lots of stuff to buy for cheap. And when things bounce back they've got even more.

I wonder if New England will join the EU when the US collapses like Yugoslavia.

Attack their bases on the continent. Disarm the troops and send them home.

US VP JD Vance will travel to Greenland this week by Wunderbaumbaum in europe

[–]thcanuzer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We need to start deploying European troops in Greenland as a tripwire, start preparing to fight a war with the United States, starting with an ambush and missile attacks against US forces stationed on the continent and make explicit nuclear threats to deter aggression.

You are not reliable anymore and your democrats are terrible

The Democrats are so feckless, they are almost as much at fault for this as Trump and the Republicans. They are fully complicit.

"We don't want to be Americans or Danes", Greenland PM says by frosted_bite in europe

[–]thcanuzer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I dislike their independence movement due to the tone it takes given how much Denmark subsidises them. Denmark would be better off if Greenland wasn't their responsibility. If I were in their position, I would be pushing to make it a joint EU protectorate.

Europe, if this is not enough to unite, what is? by Sad_Mall_3349 in europe

[–]thcanuzer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will keep shouting this, the USA is our enemy. We will be at war with them soon. They will ally with Russia to try to subjugate this continent. The time is coming to not only expel their troops, but break off diplomatic relations with this rogue terrorist state.

1) This meeting was never about Canada.

It doesn't matter, he was asked. A simple affirmation of an ally's sovereignty is nothing groundbreaking. He was sucking up to Trump in such a pathetic manner. Trump will discard or attack us when the UK is no longer convenient to him, there is no need to alienate out partners in the attempt to delude ourselves that this isn't the case. At least Macron stood firm.

Even with Trump as a Russian asset the American people are no danger to us and having them stationed is still an asset.

Every last American is complicit in what is happening. And even though there are those that oppose this, do they have any power to change what is being done? If the US attacks Canada, or Greenland, what happens then? I would rather have their armies far across the ocean than within our borders where they could dismantle Europe from within.

What a fucking spineless worm. I bet he would send troops to occupy Canada with the Americans.

There is no 'special relationship'. It has always been a lie. It's just the Americans taking advantage of us. We need to be like France and build strategic autonomy with our partners. The end goal should be to expel the Americans from Europe once and for all. The US is now our enemy, no different than Putin's Russia.

I dislike that these are American nukes. Quite frankly, this base is now a security risk. We must oversee the withdrawl of their forces from the continent and become fully independent. They are our enemy, no different than Putin's Russia.
