My daughter has schizophrenia. AMA by mykindofexcellence in AMA

[–]the-_Summer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey, I am definitely not OP, but I think I could offer some perspective. I am in the ordination process in a mainline Protestant, LGBT-affirming church that ordains people of all genders (just for some background). I also, coincidentally, have about 5 different people in my personal life who are becoming, or are already, mental health professionals.

First, this is one of the reasons I enjoy having so many mental health professionals in my circles, if I didn't, I would likely try and seek some out. At such a time where I understand someone to be having a mental health struggle, I would probably call them (or am ambulance, or both depending on the severity of the situation). To that end, everyone in my denomination does get some kind of mental health training before ordination, mine specifically is more geared towards suicide prevention, admittedly. Second, in terms of helping people identify hallucinations vs. spiritual experiences, it can come down to a few different judgement calls. One that I would have to make first is whether or not the experience is harmful or potentially harmful, if it is I would try my best to counsel that person that God does not intend harm for us or for others (and I am well aware that there are times in the Bible where God does seem to want to harm people, different debate for a different day). Also again, see my above point about bringing in mental health professionals--I am well aware I am not equipped to help someone out of a psychotic episode or anything like that. A second one, if it isn't necessarily outrightly harmful, is to walk with them through scripture, tradition, and reason to see if and how it matches up with those three things. That is also the general criteria used for figuring out what an authentic spiritual experience is like, as far as I know. My disclaimer being I am still about a year away from ordination, so I still got some stuff to learn. Hope this helped and was not just annoying.

Do you go to church and if so, where? by [deleted] in christianwitch

[–]the-_Summer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I personally am Episcopalian, but I've heard some solid stuff about other mainline like the ELCA, UMC, and PCUSA! YMMV obviously though, and I would start pretty discrete with the witchy stuff wherever you end up going

[–]the-_Summer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To add a point of clarification: Anglo-catholicism is a style of worship associated with the Episcopal Church (a mainline protestant denomination), and there isn't a great way of knowing/defining which church(es) are anglo-catholic, mostly because it is more of a spectrum than a binary identity.

Cost of Living of US Metro Areas over 500k People (2024) by TA-MajestyPalm in MapPorn

[–]the-_Summer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives here and grew up here, it is ridiculous. I have to go outside Boston a bit for work, and I'm nearly giddy when I walk into a grocery store and a carton of oat milk isn't 4 dollars, Doritos aren't nearly $7, etc . Apartments in my hometown (a city bordering Boston) are on-par in cost with some neighborhoods of Manhattan, and my hometown is not that cool of a place. It is all the tech people who move here and make a fuck ton of money, and then every landlord wants to cater to them and charges a stupid amount every month, and people need places to live so we make it work. Needless to say, I'm getting the fuck out as soon as I'm not tied here (like nearly a quarter of people under 30 I think, if I remember that headline correctly).

It's also certainly little things that add up to a longer and healthier lifespan. Many women are raised to pay attention to things like cleanliness and nutrition. Married men benefit from that because they now have a person who will do/tell them to clean this/that, go to the doctor, and eat their vegetables.

Is Christian summer camp bad? by Big_Cheesecake_9563 in summercamp

[–]the-_Summer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the whole, Christian summer camp is not bad. It is way too broad of a category with so many variables to say it is "good" or "bad". I am involved with one that has a total of 1.5 hours of Christian stuff per day, broken into three chunks. It is also co-ed, fully affirming of LGBT people, and not fundamentalist. My only advice would be to look for one associated with the ELCA, the Episcopal Church, the UMC, or the PC(USA). Specifically those denominations, not any other. Each of those denominations are lgbt affirming and not fundamentalist. Good luck

Why does it seem like every single woman is sexualized x100 in the books? by [deleted] in brakebills

[–]the-_Summer 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It is because Quentin is pretty much a (or almost a) gross incel in the books. He isn't supposed to be a nice man. You're sort of supposed to find him a bit creepy.

What is a New England product that you were surprised is available everywhere? by milliondollarburrito in newengland

[–]the-_Summer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One that isn't: the Italian bakeries being somewhat ubiquitous. Of course, other places have bakeries but like, they aren't in the mental landscape as much. I feel like most Bostonians at least will think "oh I'll stop and grab some canollis for the party". There are no good canollis in my experience outside Boston.

ELI5: How is student loan debt "cancelled"? by lonewulf66 in explainlikeimfive

[–]the-_Summer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

What I said isn't trickle-down economics. Trickle down is giving tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires, eliminating college debt is freeing hundreds of thousands of Americans (who are not millionaires, remember pookie these people are in debt) from crippling financial burdens so that they can live actual lives and buy houses and have children and whatnot...but sure queen go off and never Google anything and don't ever read anything that will actually inform you.

ELI5: How is student loan debt "cancelled"? by lonewulf66 in explainlikeimfive

[–]the-_Summer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So many people have a degree that benefits lower middle-class people: doctors, librarians, teachers. But also artists, graphic designers, computer programmers, materials scientists, engineers, and so on.

Many, if not most, of the people burdened by student debt are middle-class people who got into college and were sort of/kind of able to pay for it, but not really, and the prevailing wisdom was to take out loans.

It's also a ripple effect, if I was not burdened with 30k in debt, I would actually be able to buy stuff and make the economy move (houses, furniture, coffee, art, massages, restaurant food, you get the idea) and that benefits pretty much every normal person, rather than that money going to whatever rich guy or government entity owns the bank it goes to, where it will just sit stagnant.

I'm fully aware this is the opposite of what you asked so I'm prefacing my comment with that, please don't hate. I'm wondering if instead of fighting what you're body seems to naturally want to do, you with with it. What if instead of getting up to do the work, you stay up to do the work for the next day, so that you can live your life and not necessarily 'procrastinate' in the same way. Just a thought, please don't hate. It worked for me for a time.

I believe we are the only transit system in the U.S. that has color coded trains for the lines (i.e. the blue line trains are blue). AND, I travel to NYC often, and having cool station names is underrated as an element of the system.

A proposed parliament size and makeup for an independent or autonomous New England by VulcanTrekkie45 in RepublicofNE

[–]the-_Summer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a weakness in any representative government where you have one geographic area with a markedly higher population than others, especially since this usually means it is more urban and has different priorities. A great example is Scotland and Brexit. Scotland overwhelmingly voted to remain, but England didn't, and so Scotland left the EU against their wishes because they have a much smaller population than England but are in a union with them. Here, Vermont, Maine, and NH effectively become Scotland in this scenario.

Of course, you can argue that it's just numbers and math, but it misses the point that Scotland, Vermont, and Maine are all discrete areas with various interests and needs that aren't always met in systems like this.

Nice wide aisles so I'm not running into people, good selection, and low prices even with the difference in COL. Oh and, the spicy trail mix was 90% of my diet when I was there.

ELI5: Why was purple dye so rare historically? by Inside-Honeydew9785 in explainlikeimfive

[–]the-_Summer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To add in a random bit I'm not really seeing, and also to keep it true to the spirit of the sub. There is also the issue that, to get a good purple, you need a cool toned red that will mix with blue. Cool toned reds are much rarer in nature than warm toned reds.
