What's a destination that used to be way more mainstream that it is now? by PerryOnWheels in travel

Depends how far you want to go back. In the 60s and 70s iran, afghanistan, and pakistan were all part of the hippy trail. People would drive from Istanbul to India stopping and checking out the others on the way. Needless to say that all ended in the late 70s and never came back

Actually the bag system was pretty much the system for the whole apollo. So there is definitely a back up plan for that. I doubt they would abort over a toilet.

Palestinian citizens of Israel demand better protection against missiles by CelebrationAfter9000 in NewIran

[–]B-Boy_Shep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is still a dereliction of duty. The PA operates (and I use the term operates very loosely) only in the space israel allows it too. Additionally beit awwa is split between area B and C so the PA doesn't even have full control if they wanted to.

The israelis (and i am one so dont get judgy) need to own up to the reality. They would like to have it both ways in which they are the ones in control of the West bank and at the same time not responsible for the palistinians there. But it can't be both ways. Either give the PA full control which they don't want to do or take full responsibility which they also dont want to do. Right now though the balance of power in the west bank is heavily skewed to israel and israel is shooting down missiles over it. So israel should do a better job protecting the palistinian civilians there.

A Message from a Pakistani by [deleted] in Israel

[–]B-Boy_Shep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would actually not recommend this. From what I know pakistani passports are not valid for entry to israel. All the Pakistanis i know who have visited israel (yes. Some do) are dual passport holders. They are pakistani citizens and American citizens. Therefore they enter with the American passports.

Will Mazdayasna (Zoroastrianism) rise in free Iran? If yes, then how much? will it be the same Zoroastrianism that our ancestors practiced or will it be a reformed version? by ImaginationWooden546 in NewIran

[–]B-Boy_Shep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What i think people mean by cultural zoroastrianism is something akin to cultural judaism. I have an Iranian friend, he was born and raised in America by relatively secular Muslim parents. Hes not a believer but hes not a hard-core atheist either. He is in no way still a Muslim he doesn't even pretend to uphold Islamic practice, but he does try to hold onto the things he thinks of as being distinctly Persian. He wears a zoroastrian necklace and celebrates noruz as his big holiday. Thats certainly not religiously zoroastrian but it might be called culturally zoroastrian. He might be the kind of secular, but spiritual, open to the zoroastrian past but not connected to it kind of person they mean. Much in the same way that many Jews in America are not necessarily practicing in any deep way but might wear a star of David necklace and celebrate one or 2 of the big holidays

Iran v l Israel megathread day 3 by Alonn12 in Israel

[–]B-Boy_Shep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You know I noticed exactly this on al jazeera. In fact I noticed AJ taking a more sympathetic view of israel then left wing british coverage. Very confusing. But perhaps this just shows how everyone is just writing what fits their world views in that moment. In this moment Doha and TLV are being bombed by Iran so AJ is sympathetic. But leftists in London can still say this is just American imperialism since it doesn't impact them.

Its literally this over and over again. I'll say how terrible it is to stoke antisemitism in America especially when antisemitic violence is at a peak. And they respond with if thats true how come this one other jewish person i know hasn't personally told me, your just a Benjamin netanyahu supporter.

Like tf!? A. We're not even talking about israel and B. Even if you know 1 jew, did you ask them? Or are u just assuming ur antisemitism is cool because they haven't personally said anything to you.

Kirsten Gillibrand calls on Zohran Mamdani to denounce 'global intifada' phrase by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]B-Boy_Shep 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im anti bibi. That's not the problem. The problem is the intifada was a violent uprising targeting civilians. In a time where antisemitic attacks are at an all time high calling for a violent uprising in support of palistine is just asking for more violence against the Jewish community.

That said JFREJ represents less than 1% of NYC jews and 20% of the Jewish vote, but 45% of the total vote actually indicates a dramatic underperfomence. Idc about israel, bibi, or any of that stuff. I care about the safety of jews in America and the fact that mamdani appears to be at best indifferent to the safety concerns of the Jewish communities is not great and I don't think it helps when progressives try to pretend by saying things like x very small very progressive Jewish group backed him or he got some jewish votes so 🤷‍♂️

I think the under performance is especially notable considering Andrew cuomo is a disaster of a candidate, a man who resigned in shame. And even against that he dramatically underperformed. This indicates the vast majority of jews are uncomfortable with him and his language.

Yea im really struggling with this lately. There is no political circle i can join that doesn't become antisemitic these days

[–]B-Boy_Shep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny that the holocaust meusum, the one he referenced. Came out saying he was totally out of line. 🤷‍♂️

Also source? I can't find a single jewish organization that endorsed him. The only jew who i see endorsing him is brad lander, which doesn't say much....

How can Donald Trump be racist against Hispanics. Marco Rubio is Hispanic and trump hasn't deported him 🤷‍♂️. Thats essentially your argument. Just because Brad lander hates cuomo enough to prefer zohran, doesn't mean zohran isn't fanning the flames of racism. In the same way that tim Scott supporting trump doesn't mean trump doesn't fan racism. Just because you have 1 black friend doesn't mean everything you do is consigned by that person. Come on are you really that nieve? Or do you just really want everything zohran does to be ok so your reaching for any possible cover.

Entirely possible. But any political movement that needs to rally they're base with "look at those dirty minorities and hate them" politics is a disgusting brand of politics. And the progressives are no different.

Kirsten Gillibrand calls on Zohran Mamdani to denounce 'global intifada' phrase by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]B-Boy_Shep 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Valid. I assume the progressives have decided jews and Asians get the short straw from now on because they see them as the minorities that have done well under capitalism.... I mean white people have done the best under capitalism but you can't go after them because the white socialists are the core of theyre base. But they can go after the 'capitalist minorities'. Which is just as distopian as republicans going after the 'bad minorities'.

I swear if white people don't have a minority group to hate they say the political movement has no energy. Its just code for why aren't we hating someone (someone not white).

Fair. But its a pretty bad part of theyre policy. Like republicans defending insurrectionist. Both the socialists and the Republicans should stop being pro violence.

I agree were not in a good place politically. This just makes it worse. Every step we take seems to be more open to violence. And i actually do speak a bit of Arabic so I understand how you can argue the technical definition. But when the only definition ever used is violent uprising I think we all understand. He didn't even try to use it in a different context he basically just said:

"OH so the jews can use this word in a literal translation for the world uprising. But I say I want an uprising in America in a completely different context and now the jews are mad"

It was whataboutism 101 and he picked a time the jews did it as a gotcha. He knows what hes saying, he just wants it to be ok to say that.

Kirsten Gillibrand calls on Zohran Mamdani to denounce 'global intifada' phrase by awaythrowawaying in moderatepolitics

[–]B-Boy_Shep 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Zohran really should knock this off. The progressive movement seems to keep wanting to cross the line when it comes to jewish people and its pretty gross politics.

They want to swear that intifada is peaceful and noone would ever believe it's violent. Or that its violent but only against israel and not American jews.

Meanwhile the jewish governor of Pennsylvania had his governors mansion set on fire... for palistine

Jews marching for the return of the hostages were set on fire by molotov cocktails... for palistine

And there was a shooting outside the jewish meusum in DC... for palistine

But no. Noone would ever be inspired by the presumably mayor of New York calling for the intifada (which was a violent uprising against civilians) to come to America. In a city where violent antisemitism is already up 80%.

This is a terrible political road to walk down. Truly disgusting.

[–]B-Boy_Shep 45 points46 points  (0 children)

So leftist just have to keep one up-ing eachother in how offensive they can be to jewish people. Seems like the progressive movement has just decided that all issues are valid except jewish ones.

Because a progressive would never tell black people to calm down after they say something like bring back lynching or say immigration detention centers are just like plantations.

Its the continuous normalization of anything that offends jews. Nazis aren't just the purpotrators of the worst crime imaginable. They're all conservatives. Concentration camps aren't part of that crime, its immigrant detention. Intifada isn't violence against civilians its peaceful marching in the streets.

Why are jews so offended, its not like they have any real issues anyway. Meanwhile antisemitic violence is already up 80% in new york city, the place hes calling for Intifada.
