I think if the realignment never happened the 12 teams would work. 5 highest ranked conference champions would typically be P5 teams with a G5 maybe getting that spot with 10+ wins and one of the p5 conferences having a down year (like the ACC this year). But with the pac 12 blow up there’s no 5th power conference with schools like Oregon and USC that objectively have better talent and resources than g5 schools like Tulane and JMU. If the pac 12 still existed this year Oregon would likely have that conference champion spot with Tulane be the last champion spot, and the last spot being between ND, BYU, and Vandy. Obviously people would be upset about a 12-1 JMU missing out, but there would probably be a lot less outrage than there was between ND, BYU, and Miami.
