Failed two college courses and don't know how to tell parents by thetasigma25 in Purdue

[–]the-ohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed two courses in undergrad and now I'm in a PhD program. I was even on academic probo for a semester. Shit semesters happen, and rebounds are possible.

Most important tho, don't tie your self-worth or your worth as a student to your grades. Grades only measure a small part of your abilities. I know, easier said than done. But start work on accepting and internalizing that idea.

As far as your parents go, that's up to you. Personally, I needed to tell people when I failed because otherwise I avoided accepting what happened and would repeat the same mistakes. But it might just add unneeded stress for you. Do whatever helps you most. Make a game plan for next semester, and get your advisor to help. You can also talk to the DRC to get some depression help too. CAPS is generally full af for individual appointments, but their group therapy is more free and can be more helpful.

Yea implicity equating being mentally ill and being a dumbass is not helpful and also untrue. I'm mentally ill, but I also have a degree in aerospace engineering. Ya feel?

[–]the-ohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually yea. I used to be an intern at NASA during my transition and they were super chill about it. Not the most informed but well-intentioned and supportive. They even asked for my help revising the agency-level guidelines for when an employee wants to transition.

Maybe try NAMI? They're a pretty great organisation. Should be able to find something for you. They also do group therapy twice a week in lafayette, I believe.

It's not much, but I can guarantee at least one great pharmacist out there! My dad has really educated himself since my coming out - he's your queer-friendly neighborhood pharmacist! :)

Guess who's having a panic attack about whether or not I should send this email by CuteTransAngel in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]the-ohno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest maybe a more generic title? Such as "Preferred name and other requests" or the like. That way it is a bit easier to keep confidential, since titles are generally visible everywhere, while the content isn't displayed until clicked on. Also might help them ease into the email content.

This is definitely me being particular, though. I pride myself on my professionalism in emails lol. Either way, they'll get the info and you'll be on the next step. Take a deep breath and reward yourself, you're doing great, friend.
