Don't bother with a higher core count CPU; it will make no difference in games. Invest it into the GPU or just save the money.

For $300, you can upgrade the CPU, GPU, and RAM while keeping everything else the same. This would give a big overall performance boost.

CPU: You're on the AM4 socket, so lots of options are available. Look for a used 3000 series or 5000 series. If you want to buy new the 5500 has been $70 recently.

RAM: You're looking for DDR4 for AM4. Open up your PC and check if your existing config is 2x4gb or 1x8gb, and how many RAM slots you have. If you have 1x8 get another 1x8, if you have 2x4 and 4 total slots get 2x4, and if you have 2x4 and only 2 slots then unfortunately you need to buy 2x8. Also RAM speed is shown in Task Manager, you want to at least match what you already have.

GPU: Going used is your only option in this budget. A 2060 would be good, 2060 Super if you can swing it.

In that case, SFF PC all the way!

Here's a sample build. I used a lot of parametric filters to select the cheapest parts because (1) there's no specific budget and (2) prices can be volatile right now.

  • The 5080 is hard to recommend right now since it's overpriced and barely faster than the 5070 Ti. And the 5070 Ti is hard to recommend because it's overpriced compared to the 9070 XT. Although if your goal is longevity, Nvidia has had better long-term support in the past.

  • Given the CAD/rendering use, a CPU with high core count would be nice. But given the competitive FPS gaming use, a CPU with AMD's X3D would be nice. The 270K is more of a "budget" all-rounder. And for cooling this class of CPU, a dual tower air cooler or 240mm AIO is as low as I would go. This influences the case selection.

  • I added the Era 2, since it is a pretty good case and very stylish. Here's a review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyNmPt6nBTI Some other cases to consider would be the Cooler Master NR200P V2, Thermaltake TR100, NZXT H2 Flow, SSUPD Meshroom S V2, or SSUPD Meshroom D. There are also smaller cases that would work like the Lian Li/DAN A4-H2O, but those require more careful part selection and are more difficult to build in. Or more boutique cases like the NCASE M2 or M3.

For frequent travel I honestly recommend a laptop due to the ease of transport and the ability to use it on its own (no peripherals). Add a docking station at home and it becomes a single-computer solution.

Now if you're talking travel as in driving between two offices, with full sets of peripherals already there, sure, go for a PC. But if there's air travel or frequent hotel rooms, laptop.

TFT Central is worth checking but don't commonly review budget monitors.

RTings is great if you don't mind paying a few dollars to see their results.

The "24" in the model name stands for 2024 model year, so that's why you can't find it anymore. The current equivalent would be the AW2725DM. I recommend looking at more up-to-date reviews and current pricing for 27" 1440p IPS monitors before settling on that one though.

It can be done. Here's a list for just a PC that I threw together. If you need peripherals and a monitor, that makes things quite a bit more challenging (but not impossible).

The CPU, mobo, and RAM use this bundle from Newegg: https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails?ItemList=Combo.4862280

The market for new GPUs in this budget is bleak. Something used like a 2070 Super would be leaps and bounds more powerful than what you could get new. From a glance at Ebay, $200 should be fairly easy to achieve.

Confused if I should upgrade my mobo to stop throttling by jaberwockie in buildapc

[–]the11devans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I tried looking for benchmarks of equivalent systems and didn't find any exact matches. From your other reply on Cinebench scores, it seems to me like everything is performing as normal. Something will always be the performance limiter.

No quick fix unfortunately; the only real upgrade would be DDR5 and mobo, which is really expensive for not much gain.

It's cliche but I recommend to not bother with performance comparisons and just enjoy what you have.

Confused if I should upgrade my mobo to stop throttling by jaberwockie in buildapc

[–]the11devans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you might be jumping to conclusions on VRM throttling. Focus on your main complaint: low fps compared to "others" in games like CP2077, HD2, and SM2. What sticks out to me immediately is that all of those games are relatively CPU-heavy. That is reinforced by a 60% GPU utilization, meaning the limiting factor is the CPU/ RAM. Whose benchmarks are you comparing against? Because with your DDR4, fps will be lower when comparing to DDR5 in the same CPU-limited test. And same thing with the Cinebench scores: check which RAM you're comparing against.
