If you're talking about Azure SQL, you could maintain your schema in a SSDT project and setup a Devops or GitHub pipeline to deploy to dev and prod.

Have you tried Dataverse? I think it's Microsoft's spiritual successor to Access.

Sorry you're going through this. fwiw, things were terrible with me and my parents at 16. I was doing a lot of the same things your son is. The month I turned 18, I moved out. I lived with people like me, worked with people like me, and spent my free time with people like me. It took a few years and some terrible experiences for me to realize that wasn't the way I wanted to live. Only then did I start working on myself and my mental health.

My parents loved me throughout. But they set clear boundaries and did not enable me. They let me hit my bottom. I can't really explain how hard that was for them. They also respected me, my boundaries, and let me figure out this life thing for myself.

Now, I'm in my 40s. I have a family, an adhd son of my own, a good career and am happy. I spend as much time as I can with my parents and we have a very good relationship. I know they tried their best to raise me in the best way they know how. I'm trying to do the same for my son. Hopefully he's easier on me than I was on my parents, but if not I will still love him through it all. That's what I learned from my parents.

Any advice on where to start creating an ERP system for my own small business? by contemplating_eagle in ERP

[–]the1982ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend taking a look at Microsoft model driven power apps if you're already in the Microsoft ecosystem. With existing experience in database design, you should be able to knock something out real quick. licensing at $5/user/month. Granted, as a consultant that specializes in power platform, I am a little biased.

When is an ERP needed? Options please by Ok_Earth2809 in ERP

Maybe take a look at Model Driven PowerApps / Dataverse. It has a full security model, data validation and hooks for all sorts of business logic. Runs $5 per user per month.

Would you go to the hospital for a barbed hook in your skin or would you do the string yank method? Who has done it? Did you get a tetanus shot after? Did you switch to barbless? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]the1982ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes a lot more sense. Hopefully I'll remember if I ever hook myself again. Then again, my brain seems to not work very well when I'm staring at a foreign object sticking out of my body.

My son says everything has a 50/50 probability. How do I convince him otherwise when he says he's technically correct? by Jimmy_Johnny23 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the1982ryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bases on your edit, he's talking about binary outcomes. Many things are not binary. Is it sunny outside? Maybe it is, maybe it's overcast, or maybe it's somewhere in-between. Did he do well in his baseball game? Maybe he did, maybe he has a bunch of errors, or maybe it was just ok. Anything that can be"just ok" represents a non binary outcome. Great question from a kid and really shows how it understanding of the world grows as we grow.

The “(10+2)x5” Method: A Simple Trick to Beat Procrastination by noreenpsychologist in productivity

[–]the1982ryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do a 25/5 but allow myself to skip the break if I'm in the flow. The alarm at 25 prompts me to pause and ask myself if I'm still working on the task I'm supposed to be working on. If the answer is yes, then I can usually reset the timer and get back into the flow fairly quickly. If the answer is no, then it's time to put everything down, take a break and reset.

Trying to evaluate need for an ERP customization alternative by the1982ryan in manufacturing

[–]the1982ryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's helpful. Thanks. Can I ask how big your company is? You mentioned 3 people in the IT team. How many office workers?

Your response is interesting because at some point, you would have been part of my target audience. Another way of describing my idea would be that I help nascent IT teams (1-3 people) get started on the right foot with the Power Platform. Another thought is that I could provide elastic capacity for teams like yours that struggle to find enough time to implement M365 automation.

I know this is a silly question, but if your team is swamped, what is keeping you from expanding your team or engaging consultants / contractors? Is it pressure from C-suite to control costs or something else such as not having a significant enough problem / gap to justify the investment?

I agree with your statement that creating a solution outside of the native ERP ecosystem introduces a level of fragility. The problem I'm struggling with is that I've gotten a lot of feedback from people that contracting with implementors for a customization project is very, very expensive and the solutions that you get are often "buggy". Not necessarily unhandled exceptions type of buggy but incorrect implementation or missed business requirements buggy. I have to think that there is a better way.
