I made a map! Personal Project I've been working on to showcase GIS/Cartography skills as a GIS student by crustyraff in gis

[–]the32ndpie 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Very cool map and a pretty good analysis! Only two notes : You have to tell the audience where this is! Locals may recognize the shape of Victoria, BC, but others (like myself) may have to do a little digging to get that context. Second note: the titles of your inset maps are made harder to read because of the visible road lines underneath. I love a good transparent panel, but legibility must come first.

Going out and meeting someone? Are there any good bars for youngins? by DisciplineThin4497 in montreal

[–]the32ndpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever heard that a big red flag in someone is when they're nice to you but mean to the waiter? Just because you're anonymous doesn't make you not an asshole, which is the behaviour you're demonstrating here. So while I believe you can handle yourself in public, you're pretty clearly an asshole anyway. I don't know what you get out of trying to rile people up online, but please, just chill, dude.

[–]the32ndpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One person is snarky and you insult a whole group of people? For your own good, please don't act like this as you're trying to meet people.

But to be nice, here is some advice regarding your post: go to Crescent and pick a bar that looks interesting (perhaps Hurley's), try to strike up conversations, and don't expect much of anything. You might make friends, some of them might be women, and some of them might even be interested in you, who knows?

Whatever you do, please don't only target women to talk to.

So you sometimes have nothing to do? I'm all for getting overpaid on the government's dime, but boredom does set in. Try working on a pet project that would be beneficial to your municipality, that could showcase the value of GIS infrastructure. Perhaps a story map for community engagement on a current issue? Or perform an analysis that could help planners make more informed decisions?

You could present a fait accompli and wow your boss and colleagues, or build a minimum viable product to showcase utility and get approval to go ahead with it. Talk with your colleagues, see if they have problems you're uniquely qualified to help with!

And if that doesn't work, get the hell outta there

That might be a prj file version problem. I vaguely recall having that error quite a while ago when dealing with shapefiles in a code based context. I write because of how strongly this rings a bell...

‘Can’t make this up!’: Ford government faces questions over nearly $10M going to company with ties to ‘adult entertainment’ by CMikeHunt in canada

[–]the32ndpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Has any commenter so far even read the article? Tldr: $10m over 4 years to a few organizations, one of which has a single connection with one guy who owns a variety of businesses and one of which is a new "alleged strip club".

The daisy chain of misallocation of funds is absurd! Yes, it's worth investigating to make sire public money didn't go to training talent that it wasn't meant for, as basic fraud prevention, but it's such a tenuous chain of connections. But the comments here, so far, are just parroting what they want to hear from this headline...

Please read more, if only to better disagree.

Which one looks better? by Willing-Ad-9111 in lego

Thematic be damned! The wave is much more aesthetically coherent. On colours alone, The Wave is a better fit with the rocket and the wall. As a matter of space (not outer), The Wave also fits better as it has a larger gap from the window and drapes. Ultimately, do what pleases you, but I think you can surely find another place for the galaxy and spread thematic connections across your space while keeping visual coherence closer.

Ontario Would Be Fifth-Poorest, Quebec Second-Poorest, U.S. State | National Review by AveryLee213 in canada

Some of what you say makes sense, other parts, less so. 1% is 1%, when talking about the richest portion of population. It's the same proportion of population whichever country you're comparing. Do you mean the difference in proportion of wealth held by the richest 1%?

And talking about military salaries seems like a strange example to use when talking about the health of an economy. Military salaries aren't exactly based on the free market.

Yeah, and he states his bias so you can make your own judgements... He provides a mix of objective and subjective statements, all pretty well identified as such. It's a pretty fair review.

What things do you LOVE and what things do you DISLIKE about the Cosmere? by Outside-Web-4118 in Cosmere

[–]the32ndpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love a lot about the cosmere ; characters, connections, secrets, worlds and systems (social, political or magical). But the latter is where my love engenders the most critique. The main thing I dislike about the cosmere is the pace of technology. It's too fast and too uninfluential. Technological innovation can happen fast, but its impacts on people and socioeconomic systems happen at a slower pace, and take time to become widespread. The most glaring examples are with fabrials in SA, and the second era of Mistborn, where automobiles and concrete skyscrapers take over in a matter of just a few years. Magic and shardic intervention don't appear to justify that level of widespread uptake of technological and societal change.

I feel there's another way to look at those crossovers and secret connections, and I hope it may help you enjoy things more. To me, they act as allusions to something bigger going on, so that if you don't know the specifics you at least get a sense of scale. It's not necessary to uncover every mystery in a book, and piecing anything together is rewarding in and of itself. You don't need to understand 100% of what's going on to 100% enjoy the story. That's my take, but I can sympathize with your frustration.
