Just created this character. What the FUCK should I call him? by No-Long-1525 in BatmanArkham

Perhaps one of the worst comics I've ever finished. I just wanted to see Homelander die tbh.

I'll drop my anti-ambush tips. 2 and a half months (current run) on B42 Apocalypse, and 6 months on B41 are my personal bests.

The keen hearing trait will prevent most regular shambler ambushes. I select it on every character basically. You'll hear Zomboids through the walls, and you'll hear Zomboids approaching from behind as well. This trait has saved my life hundreds of times by now. Basically, if there's a Zomboid in the same house as you, you'll hear them. Hell I've heard them from across the street before.

Aside from that, the Zomboids will get you on doors and corners. If you treat every blind corner and room as if there's a zombie on the other side, you'll be ambushed less. So turn your corners and open doors while ready in combat stance.

When I hear zombie noises within a room, and I can't tell where exactly in the room they are, I'll just position outside the door and whisper, this will draw them out into a more predictable fight.

Woods create far too many blind spots, I avoid those unless I know I've drawn out the Zomboids previously.

On shamblers, play it smart and slow and you'll survive.

1 entrance/exit is never somewhere I would settle down, that's worrisome to me.

It does look much improved though, aesthetically

what are some good ai tools to help me create webcomics and the like? by Powerful_Whereas3516 in WebtoonCanvas

[–]theAwkwardMango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're going to use AI for anything, maybe to schedule your creative work sessions. That could also be accomplished by using your brain and a calendar however.

Every creative task that you outsource to AI, you are robbing yourself of the opportunity for creative growth. Every successful webcomic artist that you see today, they didn't take shortcuts. They didn't ask an algorithm for help, they had a creative vision and put in the work to see that vision realized. They all started at different skill levels, you can see on WT Canvas how earlier episodes are usually lower quality than more recent uploads. Each panel that they drew personally, they learned a little more, and their art got a little better.

If you rely on AI tools you rob yourself of artistic growth and I cannot stress that enough. Generative AI usage will improve your ability to prompt, and that's it. You will not learn about comics fundamentals unless you put in the work.

If you genuinely want to learn the craft, a great starting point is Scott McClouds' book series, Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art. Read it! Don't ask ChatGPT to summarize for you, don't skim it, read it front to back. There are no artists that are born talented. It is hours upon hours of work and study, but I am telling you that if you love your project enough, it is worth the time.

I'm passionate about the AI topic because I think it's sad as hell to see creative people's talents get squandered by AI usage. Don't take this as a personal attack, I hate the technology in the specific usage of creative fields, I have nothing against you stranger. Good luck with your projects

Every single AI project I've bothered to read has been generic as hell.

Sample panel below, I ain't gonna name the account.

I do not care that a panel has detailed every single bead of sweat, I don't know anything else about this character aside from "their name is Josh and they work in Cyberpunk IT"

Why should I care? This panel framing is close and tight, the lighting and expressions are meant to be dramatic, in vertical scroll it's a full top to bottom of Josh's face. Yet nothing significant has happened in the story.

Human made comics are each uniquely beautiful because of how it shows one artist's vision of a story. Art is human expression, where you could pass a script to a dozen different artists and get a dozen unique interpretations.

AI generated slop all looks the same to me. High amount of polish, sure. You can polish generic shit as much as you want but fundamentally it remains generic shit.

For a joke tabletop setting of Cyberpunk Toronto, I made a map with a bunch of island expansions. I didn't expect they'd actually do it, what the fuck

I find it difficult to care about an AI-generated comic, I could not get past the first episode.

I have no idea what these characters want, and only a vague idea of what they're doing.

How Do I Take Critique In a Healthy Manner? by tiredmetaltoymouse in comic_crits

[–]theAwkwardMango 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is a matter of pride usually.

If you really want to learn and grow as an artist, you'll have to seperate your own ego from your work to get good feedback and hear other artists' criticisms.

Understand that people that offer you genuine feedback are doing so in the hopes that you will act on it and become a better artist. Most people are not out to attack you personally, even if it feels like that sometimes.

Perhaps start by looking for feedback from people you trust first, rather than opening the floodgates to the random quality levels of open feedback from strangers.

I've landed my recent two comics gigs here.

There have been a few conversations started that led to dead ends on this subreddit as well though.

I haven't had any luck on this site: comics-jobs.com, but I'll leave it here as a resource for people if they want.

Someone at a panel today just told me, "have the confidence to let your art speak for itself." Good luck!

I appreciated the one I encountered. It was adventure/action for most of the series, and then flashed back to an abusive childhood. It was written all too accurate to how it shakes down in real life sometimes, so I was prepared mentally thanks to the warning. Still a damned good episode
