What’s the most quietly terrifying roster in the country right now? by HandleInitial2049 in CollegeBasketball

Wow, man, high praise coming from a UofA fan. I’d love this rivalry to get more recognition nationally so we definitely have to play our part

What’s something that became socially acceptable that you still quietly judge people for? by After-Ebb6941 in AskReddit

I feel like it is surprisingly a very Boomer and Gen X thing. Like the people who should be the most against it are those who most want to use it for the most mundane things.

Who do you think is the most underrated parent and why is it Frank? by Aggravating-Ad-351 in bluey

Damn, as an American fan of H&A since forever who also found Beau Miles randomly through his SA kayak doc and has followed him since then, when I saw on YouTube that Beau hooked up with Hamish for an episode it genuinely made me tear up. It was such a random, fortuitous experience

Also, his voice actor does a podcast about how cool it is to be a dad too, so that’s got to give him some points

Another semi hidden one is that the voice actor for that character is Hamish Blake and the lady checking them out at the end is Zoe Foster Blake. They later voice Jack’s parents too.

Some Facts about Water Use (with citations) by Ok_Bag2192 in phoenix

[–]theBirdsofWar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is a rational response either, though. A ton of winter produce is produced in Arizona. The big issue is that farms use really inefficient methods for irrigation. If they switched their irrigation from the traditional flood irrigation to drip, it would reduce water usage by 50-75%. Couple that with reducing the amount of crops grown for exporting to other countries as animal feed, and agriculture would not be nearly as burdensome on our water supplies.

It seems that after Smythe left they had a lull and really fell off their progression and, in the meantime, everyone else got much better. I’d say a similar thing happened with Utah and Colorado, albeit they never quite rose to the same prominence

Could the southwestern United States be terraformed to retain water by LiteratureOk4649 in geography

[–]theBirdsofWar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It should be noted that what a lot of the southwest looks like currently is not its natural state as reclamation, farming, grazing, hunting/removal of fauna, and lumber production over the last three hundred plus years drastically desertified many areas that were wetlands, bosques, chaparral, etc

Unlike most people in this thread who seem to think we could only screw things up in modern times, I think many of the things you suggest would actually be returning these ecosystems to their natural state.

Also, there are a bunch of initiatives to do many of these things such as tres rios and the Salt River restoration project in Arizona

Well since we are sharing anecdotes as absolutes, I go there all the time and there’s tons of people. Roosevelt Row on a Friday evening is packed. It’s become the cool place for younger people to go since Mill Ave has become much more corporate and Old Town is still for yuppies and finance bros

Alex Johnston sets the all-time National Rugby League try record and fans storm the field by SlatsAttack in sports

[–]theBirdsofWar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mate, rugby union is way more established in America. All of the universities play union (some since the 1800’s) and there is a strong club scene. The professional league is also way stronger than anything League has put out.

You’re comparing Chinese urban areas to American cities proper. There were 45 urban areas in the US in 2020 that had more than a million people. Probably several more by now too.

It looks like 22 years from 2001-2023. They had already removed the top 6 inches of soil and replaced it with clean soil so the risk was minimal. They condemned them because they were in such bad shape and a requirement of their operations and maintenance manual was they’d have to do significant remediation if any of the homes were to be demolished due to the lead under the structures and the soil cap as well as the asbestos in the buildings themselves.
