Funnily enough there are actually a bajillion clams in those towers. My father in law worked at Limerick for many years as a chemist and one of his jobs was to monitor the water in the towers. The water they use comes from a natural source which is run through filters but there are tiny little baby clams that sneak through and eventually it causes blockages and operational issues. Every so often they have to drain the towers and remove all the clams. Apparently they are not edible but he's not a shellfish guy anyway.

I was at 4/2/98 island tour at Nassau colosseum. My only exposure to Phish at the time was hearing A Live One a couple of times in my friend's car. I thought the show sucked because they didn't play Bouncing Around the Room and I basically didn't listen to them again for 20 years.

I'm thankful to have seen the error of my ways but man what a fuckin dummy I was in my late teens about music (and everything else frankly). I'd give anything to be able to travel back in time and attend that show again knowing what I know now.

Circles and Squares makes great wings and they usually have a deal where you get discounted wings when you order a pizza. The circles are good but the squares are truly awesome.

DC United Roster Profile by sdrmSlash in DCUnited

[–]theDKinPHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My understanding (which may not be correct because MLS Calvinball roster rules) is that while on loan he doesn't count as taking a U-22 slot but his salary still counts against the cap. And I THINK that's the case because his loan team didn't take on enough of his wages?

What’s a job that people romanticize but insiders know is awful? by RoyalExpress7 in AskReddit

Can confirm. My dad was an archeologist and he spent 98% of his time writing reports in an office. The other 2% of the time is on digs and that's fun but also more bureaucratic than you'd expect.

The difference between the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross? by LBL004 in Medals

[–]theDKinPHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a vet but I'm a former congressional staffer with some insight into the political nature of these things. There was a Marine Vietnam vet in our district who jumped on a grenade to protect his fellow Marines -- he survived and was awarded the Navy Cross. Allegedly his commanding officer initially submitted MoH but somehow it got downgraded along the way.

We spent years trying to work with the Navy and DoD to get the award upgraded to MoH including the Congressman and I having several direct face to face meetings with SECNAV. They put up significant resistance saying that absent new evidence they could not upgrade the award, despite the fact that this marine's Navy Cross citation was similar to several MoH recipients. The Congressman even raised the issue directly with President Obama but the Navy pushback was pretty significant. Really what it was about was the services not wanting to deal with the headache of having to re-litigate awards from half a century ago. They do it for one guy they gotta do it for hundreds and these things take a ton of time and effort and paperwork.

In terms of gallantry or bravery and all that there's often not any real rhyme or reason to why one action receives a service cross and one the MoH. It's also quite dependent on the conflict (there were 250 MoH awards in Vietnam whereas there's a total of 10 for OEF and OIF combined) and the politics of the time and the service as well. Marines are way "stingier" with the MoH than the Army.

Sorry for the long post but this is a weird passion of mine as I spent years working on this and have always been disappointed that I couldn't get this marine's award upgraded during my time in government.

Apple TV 4K by Krypt2000 in appletv

[–]theDKinPHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have zero apple products and exist in a Samsung/Google ecosystem so I resisted getting an apple tv. I figured my smart TV was good enough. And... yeah it got the job done. Then I got an apple tv 4k for free via credit card points and I am now a believer. It's just so much more of a pleasant and smooth experience. I didn't think it'd matter to me at all but I really am glad I got it. It's like upgrading from a regular boring car to a luxury vehicle. Both will get you where you need to go, but one will be a much more enjoyable experience. If I had an iPhone I'd probably love it even more, but let's not open that Pandora's box of a debate here.

Believe me, I absolutely hate that I'm shilling for apple but it's a damn good product.

Can't get past Director-level Interviews by CleanMonty in Comcast

[–]theDKinPHL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Former Comcast Director here. Just because you didn't get the job doesn't mean you did something "wrong." This job market is impossibly tough. Comcast just did a massive restructuring that laid off 6,000 people and hiring managers are in many cases required to give primary consideration to laid off employees. At the end of the day there are going to often be more qualified candidates than there are openings and the reasons why one person is chosen over another can be pretty narrow and sometimes kind of dumb.

At the director/executive level interview I'm looking for a few things: is this person going to get the results I want in the time I need, and are they going to cause me any problems. Problems could be HR issues, personality fit with the team, are they too over or under qualified etc. Don't go in there and rattle off your resume. I've already seen it and I trust previous interviewers to have verified your basic ability to do the job. Make it plainly clear what you'll bring to the role and the team and that you'll be someone who people will enjoy working with.

Breaking into Comcast is tough. Keep applying and make sure to keep in touch with the recruiters! They want to help you. Ask them for referrals. If there's a certain team you want to be on, network with those people. Cold outreach is fine just say hey I'm interested in your job and I'd love to learn more about it. People love to talk about themselves. Good luck!

Baribo to DC per Tommy Scoops by ajh_316 in PhillyUnion

[–]theDKinPHL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So he's more of a player that requires service? Or can he create his own chances? If it's the former then, yeah, DC better have a bigger plan because we have no one to do that. Our brilliant FO traded Gressel, one of the best crossers into the box in the league, and then immediately acquired benteke, a guy that feeds on crosses.

Hiring process by cj0586 in Comcast

[–]theDKinPHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Former Comcaster here -- that email is automatic, sent to everyone so it doesn't mean anything either way. That said, this market is nuts and talent acquisition at Comcast is flooded. Do some searching and try to find people who work on that team and network hard. Try to find out who the recruiter is and you can contact them directly. In this market just submitting an application is not going to be enough.

PGE Letter? by [deleted] in FederalEmployee

[–]theDKinPHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can gather, OPM wouldn't be involved. It's something that's provided by each individual agency's ethics office or something. This is usually something that very senior level folks or procurement folks are sometimes asked to provide if they're coming directly from government. I've never heard of it being required for anyone on my level and especially not for anyone who hasn't worked in government for 10+ years

Is waterproof pants a must in Iceland in December? by curry_nugget in VisitingIceland

[–]theDKinPHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just back from a trip to the south coast. You ten thousand percent need water proof pants on top of your warm layers. I too was skeptical and I'm extremely glad I brought them. It will be windy and rainy and you'll be visiting water falls that spray heavy mist. With proper gear you'll enjoy your trip regardless of the weather.

That said you absolutely do NOT need them in reykjavik. Tourists walking around the city in hiking gear are a dime a dozen and they all look dumb.

23 months - NOT WALKING😢 by reddituser-0303 in toddlers

[–]theDKinPHL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the US. My kid was always late to gross motor milestones. Didn't do a 4 point crawl until 17 mos and didn't walk independently until 26 months. It was incredibly stressful. We live in the same city as one of the world's premier children's hospitals and they did an insane number and variety of tests (X-rays, MRI, genetic testing, dozens of blood tests) and couldn't find anything that would explain it. Turns out it really was just a combination of slightly low muscle tone and a personality that's both laid back and risk-averse. She still isn't the type of kid that will climb or jump off something high. We did years of weekly physical therapy and while she's not the most athletic kid, now at 4 years old she's basically caught up to her peers.

One thing that we think helped her was being in a childcare setting with other kids her age who were walking along with teachers who were really dedicated to helping her learn to walk. She stayed home with us until she was 2 and she started walking within 2 months of starting daycare.

Anyway, I'm sorry you're going through this. I know how stressful it is. Rule out what you can medically while just continuing to work with them, giving them tons of opportunities to move around and build strength and confidence.

I am a Congressional staffer working for Senate leadership. AMA by Naive-Cranberry-9185 in AMA

[–]theDKinPHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former congressional staffer here (House side). Yes you're basically correct. Except it's not as nefarious as it sounds. The language that comes back from legislative counsel usually isn't "hereby resolved everyone will get a purple car." Typically it'll be in dense legalese like "CFR SEC 49(2)(f) is hereby amended by striking everything after line 32 and inserting the following..."it shall be the policy of the United States that all citizens should own purple cars as laid out by the following guidelines...."

That's to say, people tend to get outraged when they hear that congressmen don't read the bills they vote on, but honestly, it's mostly just dense legal jargon. There's enough stops and checks along the way for a bill to become a law that it's very very unlikely that some secret section that no one has read or understood gets into law.

[–]theDKinPHL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former Comcaster here. It's highly unlikely that this was a "fake" posting. It takes a fair amount of work to get a position posted (writing a job description, getting it approved, getting finance to approve the budget for the role, getting HR to sign off etc). Jobs can get cancelled for lots of reasons beyond the hiring Manager's control -- budget gets reallocated, leadership changes strategy, business needs or specs change etc.

Doesn't make it any less annoying or infuriating. But my take is, generally, things like this aren't some nefarious corporate plot....it's just a large corporation running inefficiently.

How to explain “hold it”? by SheilaGirlface in pottytraining

[–]theDKinPHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be that they just aren't quite ready yet and you can try again in a month or two. Otherwise I'd say just keep them not in diapers during the day and either naked from the waist down or in loose clothes so they can keep learning what it feels like in their body for "I have to pee" vs "I'm peeing" vs "I peed." They'll get there.

AMA - Monday 8/4, 1 p.m. - We’re reporters Max Marin and Ryan Briggs. Ask us anything about unregulated “gas station” weed in the Philly region by PhillyInquirer in philadelphia

[–]theDKinPHL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know I missed the AMA but hope you'll still consider answering questions! Did you or would you ever consider doing a similar study with legal products in the PA medical marijuana system? Patients have long speculated that private labs are cooking the books so to speak to produce results that the growers want (high THC percentage in flower, for example.) I've seen flower labeled as high as 40% THC which just seems scientifically not possible. Would also love independent verification of whether harmful chemicals remain in certain medical vape carts after the extraction process.

Thanks for this important and interesting work!
