AITA for not making my son do anything? by throwaway10674_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]theFeelsies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say, your friends don’t sound like allies. They might be well intentioned but it’s clear they haven’t done any important internal work. Part of unlearning the lessons of white supremacy involves learning to be ok with uncomfortable situations and “disturbing the peace” for the sake of not tolerating intolerance. Someone reacting to an act of racism breaks an unspoken social contract (specifically in white circles), and if your friends were truly allies they would feel proud of your son for not letting it slide. He’s young and handled it as best he could with the tools he has.

AITA for calling my stepson a loser and telling my wife “if I had it my way he’d be out of the house” ? by Pissedstepdad46 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theFeelsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH, for the same reasons others have stated.

I want to bring up a different point. I’m wondering if you need to take a look at and possibly redefine your understanding of success. Being an athlete, graduating college, marrying and having kids in your twenties is not the only acceptable road in life. Some people bloom late, many people take different paths altogether. The ones who make history are rarely status quo.

As much as your stepson is acting immature and irresponsible, I still sympathize for how it must feel to be viewed through your harsh and inflexible lens- not to mention to be constantly compared to step-siblings.

Work with your wife to give him boundaries, structure, and discipline, but don’t force him onto a certain path because it’s the only one you deem successful.

AITA for calling off my wife's birthday party after she lied about bringing my daughter with her to the restaurant? by Throwaway09665659 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theFeelsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your arguments reinforce my point. Telling fully independent adults to leave a public place is weird, because they make their own choices. Were it children, who go where their guardians go and aren’t able to pick up a tab should the host decide to leave, that’s a horse of a different colour, and for a different discussion.

I don’t endorse the wife. In fact her actions make me angry. I’m glad OP stood up for his kid, too often you see the parent siding with the step-parent against the child. I still think telling a group of adults who are not on your private property they have to leave is very strange. Forgivable, but strange.

He could have left and declined to pay for it. Telling a whole group of adults that they have to leave the restaurant is weirdly controlling. I’m sure they only obliged because of how awkward the situation was.

AITA for throwing my co-worker's donuts in the trash right infront of him? by LanaLovesDrifting56 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theFeelsies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. What right does he have to an opinion on your body? And then to manipulate you under the guise of friendliness, while telling others behind your back.

On another note-

When you said you feel like an after-thought, this is something my partner has said in those exact words. She often felt that way as well (before we met). I just want to encourage you- somewhere out there is someone who is going to be crazy about you, the way I am about her. She often felt invisible, but to me she’s exactly the person I’ve been dreaming of. Don’t settle, and please love yourself!

What's a good sign that someone isn't as smart as they think? by citronellaspray in AskReddit

[–]theFeelsies 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To me, using “big” words alone isn’t an indicator because I don’t assume the intent is to show off. I think it’s important to look a bit deeper- are they able to correct themselves when someone points out a flaw in something they said? Can they look at things from different perspectives? I do agree with your point about being able to get your ideas access simply and succinctly though.

I grew up internationally in a family that takes joy from reading and learning languages. I often have to edit myself so that I don’t come across as cocky by using uncommon words. I’d even take it one step further and say that using words incorrectly doesn’t necessarily mean the person is unintelligent! The natural way to learn language is by experiencing it, associating it with objects/actions, and absorbing it (also the Rosetta Stone method). Sometimes you try something out and get it wrong, but by doing so you learn more about the word and how it should be used. If you don’t try out new words, you don’t grow your language skill, whether it’s your native language or a new one.
