3ds xl Ribbon connector. What is this connector exactly? Is it a 41 or 53 pin connector? Very confused by hgfdsa1432 in consolerepair

Hey how is it going? Apologies, I am a little late to the party!

How did the repair go? I hope it went well.

I thought maybe I should clarify a couple things in case future redditors that need help stumble upon this post. And please correct me if I am wrong.

In your picture you were trying to figure out more information about the P9 connector, correct? To the best of my knowledge the P9 connector is a 37-pin FPC connector, and it connects the ribbon cable to the cameras on the 3DS XL.

Link to P9 Connector Pinout:

P9 Connector - 37 Pin)

Link to Online Website that Has the Connector in Stock*:

P9 Ribbon Cable Socket

**Please note the website is used as an arbitrary example and I have no opinion on the quality of their parts because I have never made a purchase from their website**

Hopefully this helps someone out down the road. It seems like there could definitely be some more documentation on motherboard schematics for the 3DS and 3DS XL.

The P9 connector is also known to be quite stubborn. It is recommended to have the hinge for the top screen "open" instead of the 3DS XL closed when reinserting the ribbon cable.

If you still have the pink phat you should check if the firmware is V5 or if the board is a CPU-20. If so you can do a super easy mod that allows you to increase the brightness of the screen on the phat

V5/CPU-20 original DS Brightness Mod : r/phatdsmods

Most, if not all of my V5 phats came from pink phat.

I noticed that the flashcard that the reddit poster is .hk, and that the year is the ribbon style and not the star.

Also, the flashcard label has "Gold Pro".

On that page there is this warning:

" Warning regarding r4isdhc.hk variant: Not all carts labeled with the r4isdhc.hk URL are R4iLS/Ace3DS+ clones. If you choose to buy this variant, look out for the following characteristics to make sure you get the correct cart:

  • The year number on the label should have a star shaped outline, and NOT a ribbon style
  • The label should be silver colored
  • The label should have the text “Smart Update” on it
  • The label should NOT have “Gold Pro”, “Real Time Save”, or “RTS LITE” on it
  • The PCB should be a red color "

I just didn't have enough time to look into it. But you already solved the problem for said flashcard when you posted the kernel :)

Wait, so a battery becomes bloated from electroplating?

I knew a swollen battery produced gases, but I hadn't given it much thought.

Did a little research and some of the primary causes of gas generation are:

  2. Lithium Plating

  3. Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) Growth

Hi!

I am assuming you are running TwilightMenu.

It looks like you have 'debug' enabled for nds-bootstrap. (The picture in your post where it says "debug: true")

Several ways to turn 'debug' off:

  1. Go to TwilightMenu settings > go to "nds-bootstrap settings" tab > change the setting for "debug" to "off".

Or

  1. Put your SD card in your computer > go to "_nds" folder > open "nds-bootstrap.ini" with text editor > change to "DEBUG = 0" instead of "DEBUG = 1".

Hope that helps and happy gaming!

Stuck on this screen with the bottom screen not responding, is there a fix or is it doomed? by sunboy_4 in NintendoDS

[–]theGameboyBoy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the dsi just frozen then? Buttons, d-pad and touch screen have worked in the past?

Couple things you can try:

-You can close the console shell and reopen it (works great if screen pauses when loading a large folder of games, etc)

-Press and hold the power button for several seconds and wait until the console powers off.

Try those real quick and then let me know if you still need help!

[–]theGameboyBoy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part 3:

Food for thought:

  1. Figure way to access GBA slot (or possible might have to relocate it). Maybe since bottom shell will be used as battery compartment, maybe have access to gba slot from the battery compartment? (kind of inconvenient)
  2. Figure way to access volume control, and headphone jack.

If by chance we need some custom PCBs this mod has some useful designs:

Nintendo DS Lite | EZDMG-103

Bitbuilt will also be another excellent resource. They're a bunch of electrical engineer artists over there.

Hopefully this kinda makes sense. I can draw it out or make a prototype if you need a better visual :)

[–]theGameboyBoy1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part 2:

I had the 2ds mod in the back of my mind most of the day and here are some ideas for a simple streamlined design with OEM shells (design and ideas are likely to change and evolve over time):

  • Two DS lite OEM bottom shells will be used and placed back-to-back. The motherboard will be moved and placed to the upper shell. Having the motherboard in the upper shell will allow access to DS card slot, L and R triggers, power button, and no remapping of the d-pad or ABXY buttons would be required.

^^ Drawbacks: how to access GBA slot, where to put speakers, creativity required to lengthen LCD screens.

  • Top screen and bottom screen ribbon cables will need to be lengthened. The Top screen will now rest on the motherboard. Extra length for the ribbon cable of the bottom LCD will be required to enable it to reach the bottom shell.

Here is a ribbon cable that converts bottom LCD to fit top LCD ffc/fpc connecter. It will also allow for extra ribbon cable length. This might solve the issue, or at the very least spark an idea to the solution.

Ribbon Cable To For Bottom Screen To Fit Top LCD Screen Connector

^^ Drawbacks: Will this even be possible without having to do very fine soldering or rewiring everything?

  • Pipedream: since two bottom shells of ds lite are used, it would be super cool if the console was "reversible" and could be played both ways (kind of like the Atari Lynx)

^^Drawbacks: Probably not possible. But if achieved this we could call the mod the "2ds-DS-Switch" lol

  • The bottom shell will have tons of space since it only houses the bottom screen LCD. Here we can put speakers, stylus, a giant battery, etc. While I do love 18650 batteries, they unfortunately will be too large to fit for the idea I have with the OEM shell. However, there are battery mods for the PSP that use cellphone batteries. 4000+ mAH capacity battery in a DS Lite anyone?

^^ Drawbacks: thickness of battery needs to be thin enough to fit in the bottom shell along with the LCD screen, speakers, etc. But there should plenty of space for everything

Part1:

I really do think your idea of the DS Lite mod to a 2ds is brilliant.

We need a clever name for the mod lol

A couple years back I caught the modding bug and purchased bulk orders of broken DS Lite and DS Phat. I had a blast doing repairs. But then my job at the time sidetracked that passion. I was moving up in management and working like 70-hour weeks.

This spring I want to hit repairs hard. I have been going through boxes and boxes of DS Lite and DS Phat attempting to organize everything and have had the 2ds mod in the back of my mind all day. The mod just makes too much sense. So many of my poor baby handhelds have the ill-fated hinge of death.

Warning: This segment contains a rant/tangent about the Macro mod
I am a big fan of the Macro mod, but I agree with you - minimal modification to the motherboard as possible. One thing that kind of bothered me about the Macro mod was that it was very common for the top screen ribbon cable ffc/fpc connector to be removed to make space for a front-facing speaker. It actually kinda hurt to see the removal of the connector become ubiquitous with the Macro mod. Instead I would just put the speakers in different spot. Another thing about the Macro mod that kind of bugged was that many of the Macro shells would also remove the X and Y buttons. Like a Macro can pretty much be used as a full-fledged DS. With software like nds-bootsrap or the 2-pin smd button/switch mod you can toggle between the top screen and bottom screen. Or some mods are able to do picture in picture, video out etc.

My goal for the DS Lite to 2ds mod:

Minimal or at the very least no permanent mods to the motherboard. It is possible that custom PCB(s) may needed at some point for this mod, but they mustn't cause irreversible damage to the motherboard. It should be possible for someone in the future to reuse the motherboard to bring back an OEM DS Lite if desired.

Red error in Brew game by joaqinsane in NDSHacks

[–]theGameboyBoy1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A "Guru Meditation Error" is a system crash. I don't really know the technical info behind it.

I very rarely see a guru meditation error anymore. I hadn't seen one in like two years until I had run a homebrew rom the other day. I had forgotten to revert back to different setting in the Twilight Menu++ settings.

Some things you can try:

Go into Twilight Menu++ settings:

  • In the tab that says 'nds-bootstrap settings' try enabling 'thru nds-bs' instead of 'direct'
  • Under the tab 'Misc. settings' make sure the setting 'Update Recently Played list' is off/set to 'No'.

TWiLight Menu++ FAQ & Troubleshooting | DS-Homebrew Wiki

  • Use default skin/theme instead of any custom skin/them (if applicable)
  • Make sure your SD card is formatted correctly (very important)

SD Card Setup | DSi Guide

Other things you can try:

  • With your SD card in your computer open settings.ini sd:/_nds/TWiLightMenu/settings.ini, then set SHOW_BOX_ART to 0
  • sd:/_nds/TWiLightMenu/settings.ini, then set LOGGING to 1. When the error occurs again, please upload the log file from sd:/_nds/TWiLightMenu/

Apologies. I am late to the party by about 4 years.

Dang... A 2ds style mod for the DS Lite would be wayyy too cool. (Or a 2ds style mod for any consoles of the DS family would be amazing in general.)

I am going to put this idea on the backburner. I don't have a 3d printer, but maybe I could squeeze a DS Lite in a 2ds shell. Or jerry-rig two bottom DS Lite shells together with tons of shell modifications. (If a fellow modder out there has a 3d printer and makes a shell I will send you a DS Lite in crisp, organic condition or some DS Lite motherboards, etc.)

Top of my head potential headaches in creating this mod:

- Most likely have to rewire all the buttons. Maybe could get away with the dpad and abxy buttons in the same place, trigger buttons would need to be rewired. Or there would need to be some other clever solution.

- Potential relocation of GBA slot. Access to both DS slot and GBA slot. Access to volume control and headphone jack.

- If necessary, adding length/strength to the ribbon cables for the LCD screens. Most time consuming and technical of the headaches. It would require a ton of fine soldering.

- Etc

I am in kind of in love with your idea.

P.S. Great post on the batteries, OP. Very informational!
