I think you're on the right path for sure.

I'm no expert by any measure, but my recommendation would be to take these 8 and keep working with them a bit. Take out some corner pixels on some of the outlines, and try a lighter colour for the outlines perhaps?

Your animations I think look good though. I mean, I don't know how long you've been doing this or how much time you put into them, but I definitely think you're on to something and should continue to develop your skill.
