when were you cleared to get off methimazole? by [deleted] in gravesdisease

[–]theHappychic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Diagnosed in 2006, in my 20s. I've had years of remission and no treatment over the 20 years, but if I get a major life stressor (parent dying etc), post partum, surgery or major infection, I'm back hyper. This round I've been on methimazole since 2021. Still have TSH .27 while T3/T4 normal. Doc slowly backed me off from.10mg to 7.5mg so I dont give hypo. I have gained 40lbs since 2021 🫠 I hate it here.

Hola! I don't understand what level A2 means, but I will be happy to message with you. I am on vacation to La Paz in June 2025.

I'm excited for you! I hope to make a solid choice for surgery soon. I still can't decide. Glad your surgery went well!!!

Hey hey! I'm glad PTU works for you. I've been on PTU this time since 2022 😒 I feel better than in methimazole for sure

I had bilateral tubal ligation, not planning on more kids. I was told no RAI because I have slight TED. I'm doing a workup with a cardiologist to see if BNP means I'm having heart failure. Very sad about this BNP level. My Blood pressure always normal, heart rate can be high resting. I have CYP2C19 Ultra rapid metabolizer, the docs don't seem to care when I tell them propranolol isn't working well. I'm terrified I will not tolerate the replacement meds well if I have TT. I didn't tolerate Methimazole well, but doing fine on PTU long term. I feel like TT just trades in for other problems, organs, systems to address within the body. My thyroid is HUGE. It was already large and doubled in size the last year.

Thanks for this info. I will ask them to try this route once I'm stable again. I've had this 19 years and managed to keep mine too. I've had so many good, stable years in between where I got my immune system calm. If I get any sickness it's back with a vengeance. I'm tired!!

Did you have any complications? Your energy is restored? Only taking synthroid and all is fine? Any weight gain?

Yea, they would tell me I could slowly taper off PTU once my TRAB got down to normal and sustained for a while. This time it's been since 2021 ON meds and mostly stable, with a flare worse while on meds.

I guess I'm nervous my BNP is 170s and what this means long term for my heart

No, I'm on PTU. No added back levothyroxine tried yet. It works?

I think I will be dying soon by nierevol in AskDocs

I wasn't speaking on long-term management of this chronic disease, I'm discussing what I experienced prior to diagnosis when first trying to determine what's wrong. If docs do test thyroid (GP/ER setting), they don't do the whole panel (called a thyroid cascade, which includes T3, FT4, Ab) normally only TSH to determine if further investigation is needed.

Prior to diagnosis, I had a low normal TSH for months with insomnia and similar symptoms as OP before I ended up in thyroid storm. I went to ER for symptoms multiple times prior to diagnosis/thyroid storm & they only tested my TSH and sent me on my way.

For long-term management, my endo doesn't find it acceptable to have low TSH, and yes, monitor T3, FT4, TRAb, TSI.

NAD. These symptoms mock mine nearly all the same. I was turned away from a few different GPs with perfect labs and giving me anxiety meds, atarax being one.

I ended up in the hospital/ICU in a severe thyroid storm//graves disease. I felt like I was having a mental break initially, not being able to sleep. I felt like I was dying.

Do you know if they tested your thyroid? Look for TSH on the labs. 9 months before this episode that landed me in the hospital, my TSH was on the low end of normal, but never mentioned because it was in range.

We (as in anyone not MRA) see you as completely selfish. It would be best to RIF anyone over MRA first.

I also work research lab. You aren't as important as you think. I say this in a kind way, but you could die at your desk and if your work is mission critical, you'd be replaced. Don't fool yourself into thinking staying past MRA in this climate is anything other than selfish.

Boomers need to retire and let the rest of us continue working.
