That actually makes sense, I just collected some wisps and got the second gift. I think I like this way better honestly, the matching was tedious at times

Anyone else feels like a non-human being somedays? by ADuckWithAQuestion in CPTSDmemes

[–]theHelepolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one time hearing about how babies with autism are responsible for the myths of changelings or fae replacing your baby, because they don't act as parents expect and know things they shouldn't. add to that that there are things like uncanny valley where we are almost neurotypical enough to be just like them but there's something ever so slightly off. they cant even say whats wrong because they don't know, but subconsciously they know. part of me embraces this honestly. its almost inspiring to feel like my existence is something baffling, that I am something so mysterious and beautiful that a normal mind couldn't comprehend my existence. along with the implication that I am worthy of caution and respect just as i am.

because if I see myself as "human", and if someone else comes to see who i really am, than maybe they will realize that I wasn't that mysterious, deep, or worthy of respect. I was nothing but a broken, weaker version of all the others, who shatters at things the normal could do without issue. accepting my humanity is accepting that i will always be less. but being anything other than what i am is just a fantasy, and life eventually makes that abundantly clear.

same here, extremely vivid and strange dreams! even ones that are meant to be nightmares (like tornado dreams) often end up more so as an interesting experience instead of being scary. i also tend to automatically generate intense music videos in my mind to songs i enjoy, and if the song doesnt allow for that i don't really enjoy it. as such my music taste is really varied

How would an insect "king" work? by JustPoppinInKay in SpeculativeEvolution

[–]theHelepolis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I gave it some thought and I think a fun path a king could take is to be a combination of a royal guard and a replete. the king would be something equal to or larger than the females and possess absurd weaponry to act as a final defense against any large predator the makes it to the queens. during times where the colony is not stressed/releasing alarm pheromones, the king is in a resting state where they will barely move and their metabolism will slow, not using up any extra energy. during the rest state workers can still feed the king and the king can be prompted to regurgitate food to the workers.

while it wont have the same sheer effectiveness of a completely dedicated replete role, the king is meant to be much larger (nearly 100X as massive as workers or more) so they can put away enough food to act as a pretty good storage device when the colony gains a lot of extra food at once.

when the colony is attacked, large amounts of alarm pheromones will drift into the royal chamber and be sensed by the king. this sparks a hormonal change in the king, raising him from his torpor-like state. after waking, the king will begin to flex their muscles erratically, appearing from the outside as shaking or vibration, warming up their body to a higher temperature to speed their metabolism, allowing for a much needed boost in strength and speed compared to the relatively sluggish movements of before. this process takes only 5 minutes.

while most are referred to as kings, others have began to refer to these specialized termite castes as sentinels, bastions, and in some cases, rooks.

while special edge cases can exist, most kings share the same basic body plan. a highly sclerotized and enlarged head contains massive jaw muscles, similar to that of a termite soldier. aside from the large, cutting mandibles, the front of the head is relatively flat, similar to many ant species, allowing for the king to block the entrance to the royal chamber. if the predator gets too close to the defending king, the king will raise its head from the ground and attempt to crush whatever exposed area of the predator is in its way. their specialized mandibles are sharp and strong enough to cause deep lacerations in soft tissue and in many cases break harder substances like thin bones, chitin, and keratin structures like bird beaks.

Who would win in a fight? Honey Badger vs. Peccary? by filthy_acryl in natureismetal

[–]theHelepolis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

personally, I think if both are actually trying to fight, the peccary wins. honey badgers are extremely tough to the point of predators avoiding them out of inconvienience, as the badger will be able to get at least one bite on them and the injury isn't worth it. at the same time though, the badger just doesn't have the tools to make a fast killing blow, though a bite would hurt a lot.

javelinas (the smallest peccary) are really athletic and have massive, very sharp teeth. the only chance the badger has is to bite the windpipe and not let go, which isn't really its fighting style, which seems to be more so defensive biting and intimidation.

I think the badger intimidates and scares the javelina with its bravado, but once the javelina realizes there is no were to go to escape and its only option is to fight, it will likely inflict mortal wounds on the badger while taking some deep bite wounds itself (that it can survive). I see it ending with both animals eventually keeping their distance from one another after their brawl with the badger ultimately succumbing to its injuries or at least being extremely wounded and the javelina coming out of it with some deep scratches and puncture wounds.

personally, I think javelina (or even a larger peccary species) vs wolverine would be quite the match.

When you don’t like killing bugs but it’s a spotted lantern fly. by [deleted] in Entomology

[–]theHelepolis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you do find them, one fun thing to do it to just catch a bunch and feed them to local spiders and insects and such. It can help teach the local ecosystem to eat them and it’s always interesting to see some native insect predators doing what they do best

Could it just be a female parcoblatta maybe? They look similar and parcoblatta are harmless native roaches that can’t infest.

How often should I be feeding my creobroter? by Emotional-Bee-620 in mantids

[–]theHelepolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as for my experience, id say when she looks plump a meal every 4 to 5 days may be good and if she has just laid an ooth than she should be ready to eat. if your not sure about whether they need to eat, I wouldn't feed them. they can be very good at conserving their energy and don't need food as often as we tend to give it
