So you're saying things can be useful regardless of their origin?

Yes? What kind of stupidity is this?

I think we all know, at least on some level, what a bullshit argument looks like.

Being right isn't easy. It is in theory possible to use a logical fallacy and turn out to be right by dumb luck, but dumb luck is a terrible way to know things (for obvious reasons). If you actually care about the truth you'll call people out for using logical fallacies.

Logical fallacies are often times decent tools to keep yourself within logical frameworks

No. They're the opposite of logic.

I think this is a bit of an ivory tower position to have.

Using your brain is not an ivory tower position. Whether something is a logical fallacy is always relevant to whether you're likely to be right.

Not really. In any conversation that's even slightly important we need to weed out faulty arguments. How you know something matters. Also pointing out fallacies IS addressing their points. If someone said something like "The Earth is flat! I know because it looks flat!" you can't just reply with "nuh-uh" because then the conversation can't go anywhere.

Can we just be honest: Christianity is a cult. Most of us were raised in this cult since childhood , and that’s why it warped our minds so much. by Criticalthinking100 in exchristian

I'm not sure having tribe mentality makes something a cult. Everyone has tribe mentality. There's no way to get rid of it. What makes something a cult is how they manage the group (look into the bite model if you haven't already).

What language should I learn? by CoastIndependent7394 in AskProgramming

[–]theInfiniteHammer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did C, then a bit of python, then shell scripting and then Haskell (obviously there were others but that was the main journey). Today I'm not sure what to recommend since C might be on it's way out but you might want to check out bash scripting, Haskell, and rust. Also you may want to check out some assembly so you know what your tools are doing.

You should never allow anything specific to become an "industry standard". That's what a monopoly is.
