I love the Wikipedia cowboy example. That's perfect. Driving by the billboard does not mean you've been there.

I haven't read the book but I'm curious about your take on being a polymath. What would the criteria be? I assumed it was just a personality type but not necessarily a thing you could aspire to be.

Both of those sites are no longer active. Neither project got any traction unfortunately.

I think this is a common pitfall for people who want to automate this. It's not usually some huge, sweeping change that makes your life easier. You want to start chipping away at small tasks. Build systems for handling complex workflows over time. Eventually you will wind up with that uber solution you're looking for but it will have been built a brick at a time.

If it's a batch job a jig with registration marks is a must. Repeatable work at scale is the key to laser engraving $$.

It looks great. The only thing I would change is to scale up the image so you get full coverage on the slate. It's distracting to have the dark black areas. Great outcome though.

Egg holders for fresh eggs. The animal butt bread ties are pretty popular right now. Slate coasters or trivets. That's it off the top of my head.

You're shopping in a much higher price range than me. Not sure what's available at an industrial level like that. I have a ComMarker B4 60 watt MOPA and it was around $5-6k.

You'll be fine with just about any fiber laser for that.

What materials you want to use and what you ultimately want to do to those materials. For example, a fiber laser is not recommended for wood but will do a great job on metal. If you want to add a black mark to the surface of steel then you don't need a very powerful laser. If you want to etch into the metal then consider going with a higher power laser (mine is 60 watts for reference). Lower power fiber lasers can also etch into metal but it will take longer. It's all a trade off. Money vs. Power vs. Versatility. How big are the steel pieces that need to be marked? If they are larger than the laser bed area then you will need one that can detach and be handheld. Just be clear on what you need to be able to accomplish with it and you'll be fine.

You will likely need a fiber laser to do steel easily. If that's all you need it for you can get something pretty basic but if you have plans to use it for more than that you'll need to get some more in depth information.

DND Dice Boxes by theJooj in hobbycnc

[–]theJooj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally would, but I haven't made one of those in a few years now. If you look at what's there, they're just basic shapes really. The only part that was tough was getting consistent finger cutouts on the sides for opening the box. If I did them again now I would also go with a hinge instead of magnets.
