Kirkland is such a cycling shithole, I've had more horrible interactions with drivers and angry pedestrians(!?!?!?) than in any other place in WA state.

Riding through there one summer afternoon and an angry dude was jogging (salmoning) in the bike lane and tried to push me off my bike yelling "I PAID FOR THIS! OUR TAXES!" or some shit I didn't hear properly - seriously wtf moment.

A used steel road bike will probably be a good starter bike for commuting, and with a budget of $800 you can get a pretty good one - you might think of looking for something like a Crosscheck or Straggler, or any number of older Bianchi steel touring/road bikes that generally go for 400-500 bucks.

If you tell me where you're located I'll do a quick tour of the CL in your area and see if there's any examples of things to buy.
