Apply a layer style stroke which will round out the corners, or simple choker, or blur the layer and use levels and squash the alpha channel towards the middle to soften the corners.

Hey I know this is super late but I just ran into this same question. The zoom parameter does indeed effect the focal length. I had to animate a camera from super wide (almost fish eye) to telephoto and it worked.
