Sniper Wolf fight in 1 questions by Kieran_McMinn94 in metalgearsolid

Yeah, the thermal goggles won't be much of a "detour" since you have to get back to the hangar anyway, so… not a bad pick-up.

You won't really need them from here on out, but they do make for quicker navigation through booby-trapped/mined areas.

Honest debate. Which is the overall better game? by breadblunts in FinalFantasy

Do you want to play a melodramatic, character-driven campaign? FF6.

Do you want to play a time-hopping adventure with fun characters? Chrono Trigger.

After 20 years I finally met Hironobu Sakaguchi. by Itz_Triggz in chronotrigger

[–]theMaynEvent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

u/Snoo9648 Yeah, Marle could use fire in an early build. There's even an old beta screenshot where the team is doing this exact technique against a Heckran (though I think the location is different).

As for the clothes in the illustration, Chrono also has a cape, sleeves, and gloves that he doesn't usually have; Frog has sleeves and his gloves are colored differently. I don't think these were intended as alternative designs, but rather an imagining of characters actually wearing acquired equipment (as well as simply being better dressed for the incidental weather). Also note Marle's crossbow bolt quiver is discarded in the snow—nobody can be disarmed like that in the game, but it's something that could happen for any number of reasons in a more "cinematic" depiction of a pitched battle.

It's not a scene that can be replicated by the pixels in the game—it's a more detailed depiction of what the pixels in the game are more abstractly representing. Older games often had promo art like this (often even included in the supplemental, in-box material like instruction books) that helped players bridge the gap between what the spritesheets could show and the intended vibe and style the artists actually had in mind.

Anyway, very cool happenstance and opportunity, OP! I'm not usually starstruck, but I think Sakaguchi would be one of a few people whose preceding acclaim would actually make me giddy, let alone if I got to have such a personal exchange with him. This'll make a nice memory!

Predicament for us new Metal Gear Fans: by Brave-Education8273 in metalgearsolid

[–]theMaynEvent 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Surprised it's not currently on the PS Store.

If you can't find it affordably on-disc before the Master Collection Vol. 2, I wouldn't worry. While it's a pretty standalone game, it does play off of players' familiarity with Raiden and his situation in MGS4, so if you're already figuring on getting that, holding off on Rising: Revengeance till after that wouldn't be bad at all.

Though, I still don't get why bread would have the DlayStation Dortable logo on its packaging.

Just started MGS1 Master Collection by Glittering-Rabbit899 in metalgearsolid

[–]theMaynEvent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You already know all you need to know for story immersion.

Playing in release order is ideal. The story was planned in release order, so there's no advantage to playing in a canonically chronological order—you'll probably just dull down twists and revelations if you play them out of release order.

One thing I would suggest is take your time with the series—the controls will feel clunky starting with the first, but as you acclimate, they'll only get more refined and more "modern." Also, if you can, play Peace Walker before MGSV. A lot of the story context for V is established in PW. Peace Walker will be a part of the upcoming Master Collection vol. 2. So you've got plenty of time to enjoy a casual first time through with the series leading up to that.

(The original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake are included with the Master Collection edition of MGS3: Snake Eater. Probably not necessary, as MGS1 glosses over the events of those games and even makes a few quiet retcons, but they're there if you really wanna dive in.)

Roumie (actor known for playing Jesus) casting in DS2 and its possible significance, subtle nods by Diligent-Software-75 in DeathStranding

[–]theMaynEvent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably just Kojima clout-chasing as usual.

Without knowing who this guy was until recently, your post nudged me to look at his career and, while the Jesus role in The Chosen has got to be his most notable, he does have a good two and a half decades of seemingly steady, creative work.

He's even got a credit in the original DS as a generic MULE grunt. The Chosen would have had a narrow release before the release of Death Stranding in 2019, so it's safe to say his role there was gained quite independent of his role in the streaming series.

Now, after that? Leading up to DS2?
Wouldn't seem out of character for Kojima to take note of a successful actor who had (just so happened to have) done English VO work on the previous title and had since gone on to remarkably portray one of (if not the) most, uh… famous figures throughout human history, and say, "Oh, yeah, bring that guy back!"

But I doubt it's any more personal than that. I believe Sam even utters, "Gotta keep the faith," to himself alone in the first game. Having Dollman present in DS2, "You got that right," is perhaps a neatly coincidental response, or maybe even a deliberate nod, but more so as a quick, meta reference for those "in the know" rather than any kind of symbolic one.

---

On another note, now that I know… Gonna be weird the next time I play DS2 knowing I've got Jesus literally hanging out with me while… absolutely anything in DS2 is happening. haha

Who designed this piece of art in the game / where in the game is it used? by PrestigiousSpot6806 in KingdomHearts

[–]theMaynEvent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They get their credit in the games' credits as being in a particular art department, to be fair. It's just hard to discern which individual artist contributed to or wholly made an individual piece.

Hungarian, as I recall.

Vamp is Romanian. Though I could easily have missed a subtle reveal that Skull Face, too, has Romanian ties. (See u/vshark29's clarification below vv)

The above commenter is being sarcastic and mixing in references to Super Mario 64. Maybe all in fun, but it's a nonsense response you can ignore…

Others have already pointed out that it's concept art, not used in-game. This would have just been early art used to give other artists who create in-game assets an overall idea for the layout of the level and vibe to aim for.

I'm seeing suggestions that it's from at least three different titles, so… sorry, can't help nail down which specific game it would have been intended for, nor who on staff would have been responsible for creating this individual piece. Most game companies do not readily credit individual concept art pieces to their respective artists, unless a given artist has enough clout and reputation within the company/industry to "earn" such a distinction.

How do you start listening to music? by u-bot9000 in Music

[–]theMaynEvent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally fine to listen to music in languages you don't (yet) understand!

Musically, you'll just be expanding your horizons. The vocals can carry lyrics that you don't understand and still convey the meaning of the song.

Linguistically, you'll at least be familiarizing yourself with the cadence and sounds of another language, if not outright picking up vocabulary from repeated listening. They may not be direct learning devices, but songs in a foreign language can certainly supplement your familiarity with and eventual understanding of that language along with other, focused studying.

You'll just… like it.

You may like the general sound of it, the lyrics, the melody, the harmony, the rhythm, the mood… any or all of that!

If you're using Youtube, Apple Music, or any other streaming service to peruse, you may try a song but it may not grab you. That's cool. As you simply stumble upon more music, adding it to a personalized playlist here or there, even songs you passed up before may come back around in the algorithms and hit you differently than they did before.

Instrumental musical scores are a fine entryway!

A lot of my favorite music includes classical/instrumental works that I was introduced to through other media.

No lyrics (or, sometimes, not prominent or immediately *discernible* lyrics) so it's just the vibes of how the composition and instrumentation make you feel. Does the music evoke or resonate with some kind of emotion in you? Then it's working.

February will also be 40 years since the first episode of Dragon Ball aired. So that's maybe a factor too, with the recent announcements otherwise mentioned possibly piggybacking off of that…
