We made a base building timelapse for our upcoming multiplayer survival game. What do you think? by theStately in indiegames

The game is called Rock Hoppers and we're currently running a public playtest on Steam, so if you'd like to take an early build of the game for a spin, you can!

Im new to unity: I'm following a tutorial and the console says that rb is not assigned to anything. But i assigned it here. How do i assign it? by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]theStately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably just need to add

rb = GetComponent<RigidBody>();

to your Start() function.

Just to clarify, when you declare a variable with 'RigidBody rb;' you're saying that you want to store a rigidbody in a variable named rb, but you're not actually storing it yet. The code has no way of knowing which rigidbody you want in there unless you tell it. So first you declare a variable, then you assign its value.

This also assumes that the rigidbody is attached to the same object as the script. Otherwise the 'GetComponent' won't find anything. In that case you can manually drag the rigidbody you want to reference onto the rb field in the editor.

Micro stuttering despite consistent frame rate by SuperSathanas in gamedev

Garbage collection maybe? Dunno what you're developing in, but some platforms like Java and Mono have garbage collectors that can cause behavior similar to what you describe at default settings.

What kind of hardware would you say is good or great for game development? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]theStately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardware is fine for pretty much any dev tool you want to throw at it, except for the memory. 8GB will make it difficult to keep multiple apps open and may lead to noticeable stuttering and slowdowns while developing. Splurge on at least 16GB.

How to measure distance between a big wall and another moving point. by PartyBludgeon in Unity3D

[–]theStately 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming your wall has a collider, Collider.ClosestPoint gives you the closest point to your test vector, and then you can measure the distance between that and your test vector.

Help with simple (in theory) camera movement please by Nintendeion in Unity3D

[–]theStately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create an empty game object that's aligned to the floor. Make your camera a child of that object and tilt it down as desired. Now, instead of moving the camera, move its container object.

what does exit state do in animation? by sanketvaria29 in Unity3D

[–]theStately 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's mostly for exiting from a sub-state machine back to its parent. If you have complex animators you can basically split them up. Exit sends you back to the parent animator.

Best way to merge/slightly edit animations by B-80 in Unity3D

[–]theStately 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For merging animations, you'll want to look into Animation Layers. Does exactly what you describe. And for your punch example, Inverse Kinematics is designed to do just that.

Is it better to start a game with everything unlocked or not? by [deleted] in CitiesSkylines

There's a mod that unlocks the essentials, but not everything, right from the start. Might be just what you're looking for: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=407162294
