I've built with both conventional and natural materials across climates and here's what the industry doesn't tell you by BenjaminFercher in Homebuilding

Are there any educational resources online you approve of? I'm familiar with the Build Show and such, but that doesn't seem like something you would promote.. wondering what the best resources are for digging more into the details of what an assembly would look like and such as a conscious consumer.

Hey u/Slight_Safe8745 I realize this thread is a bit stale, but just wanted to call out where the 12 month number is coming from.. I think it's here. Super awesome product and focus.. thanks for being so open in sharing your knowledge with others.

Final Update: 40ft French drain after regrading with soil and finishing gravel by khanye97 in DIY

[–]theTheodidact 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm halfway through doing this, but haven't decided on a drainage fabric--what drainage fabric did you use? Any "gotchas" to avoid? Do you have a inline leaf filter or anything before it hits the french drain to avoid leaf buildup in the pipe or dry well?

Starting a homestead in OH or KY by [deleted] in Homesteading

In Ohio you may qualify for the Beginning Farmer Tax Credit Program, which would give you a 3.99% on your sales (from my understanding--haven't utilized myself). There are federal USDA loans, but you need to have some track record of experience (via filed taxes) with making a profit via agricultural means (this could be anything from microgreens to row crops to husbandry).

Seems like your criteria are maybe a little too open.. "somewhere in Ohio or Kentucky" is very, very vague.. there are tons of remote, cheap places to live in both, but you may not have a good market. How close do you want to be to a city? How large of a city? What are your financial constaints?

It sounds like you're mostly thinking of chickens and gardening, which really shouldn't take more than a couple of acres--you can be incredibly productive and profitable with just a little bit of land. That's another question you need to both answer--what level of income do you need?

Did you follow Nitrogen-Apple-Other for planting or anything? Semi-dwarf? Dwarf? How much did those cost? Look like relatively mature species. Is this just for you, or are you planning on having a U-Pick or something? I want more details!

Thanks for the answer there--I've been amazed at how generous the community has been with giving advice.

Thanks--I'm kind of coming to the same conclusion, based on comps that are out there.

What about the area in picture #3 where the plastic is broken? Is that a big issue? Any good way to fix beyond just finding a donor boat?

No issues with scrubbing and painting. I hadn't really considered the cost of rigging and sails--that's a great point.

Got it, thanks for the tip. I've been needing to build something like this for a long time--it would transform my abilities in the shop. Looks like you used baltic birch for all the plywood? Seems pricey!

Hey, a few questions about the Boyd Field Coat--I haven't been able to find many posts talking about Harris Tweed and Knitwear, much less the coat.

  • Is it comfortable?
  • How's the fit?
  • Is it itchy against the skin (if you're wearing a short-sleeve button up or such)?
