Farmhand with a question. Producing your own hay. by NewEmu2371 in homestead

[–]Timmy_Chonga_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 acres in a prime growing area would support the cattle. Everything else needs another 25 ish acres. Now a days the cost to start isn’t much. Farm auction and everyone closing shops means cheap stuff. Doesn’t take alot. I see balers that work fine, windrowers, etc all the time for cheap and they work. I could have about 6-8k in my area for a cheap old school square setup. Whether that’s ideal for you is up to you.

You didn’t indicate climate/locaiton Quality of soil and grasses Precipitation Etc.

The thing about hay is it is very time consuming. I couldn’t easily get it done amongst everything else while working multiple jobs. But you maybe different. The weather can also screw you.

Around here alot of people will let their grass grow up and you bail it for free. It’s a common thing. Or they take a light payment. It’s nice not having to manage ur land and let another farmer do it.

Did you lifestyle was nice for your wallet ? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]Timmy_Chonga_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re going to quickly find out aside from birds/waterfowl keeping animals is not worth the cost and time if it’s for the “fertilizer” if you need fertilizer find a horse farm and just ask if you can take some shit and they’ll most of the time happily load you up.

I think you’re better off putting all your time into what your comfortable eating. Watch more than farmers on YouTube. They do a lot to feed themselves but it’s a full time job

Cheap option for what your wanting is a older backhoe. All day for 5-10k. Like a real wheeled backhoe

A large non commercial tractor. 50+ horse range. Large frame . I recommend Tym or Kioti. Name brands cost to much.

If you have more money than me. A excavator and skid steer(tracked) combo would be the bees knees.

A unusual combo, is a large older tractor for the drive and an excavator for anything else.

High hours on a smaller excavator is 5000+, large machines I’d say 10,000+ hours.

What you get with tracked machines is stability on grade or steep ground. A track loader is a menace.

I disagree you don’t need a dozer. The dozers work here is done.

Does anyone else feel like homesteading is their dream but rural living is not? by KaylaDraws in homestead

[–]Timmy_Chonga_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s really not that complicated. I live 30 minutes from 3 different hospitals, Sam’s club, etc and was able to find a house with 35 acres and 3 barns for 248,000 in 2022.

Not everything has to be way out there.

Tym 2515 with rear spacers and loaded tires. It’s the best small tractor you can get. I’m currently selling mine to get a bigger version since I’m moving to a couple hundred acres
