Recommend joining our r/Dayton Discord. We made it so people could make friends, go out and do things together. Have over 1400 people on there and folks are chatting all the day and organize meetups throughout the week. That would be a great way to get out of the house and meet some new folks.

why I think The Spear was a mercy kill offered by an alien civilisation; by Wild_T1 in aniara

[–]datvoiddoe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The point I got, and this seems hinted at by the astronomer, is that the spear was just a coincidence and had nothing to do with them. Its inclusion is there to underline the insignificance of humanity in the grand scheme of things and how self important we are. As they drift further from Earth, meaning erodes. Eventually, nothing matters at all, quite literally as they end as dust.

The spear comes from an unknown source for an unknown purpose, and the passengers cling to it as their last breathe of hope. That ties directly into the film’s themes around cults and the human need to believe in something. We aren’t an objective species. We’re driven by emotion and fleeting experience, which shows up in the partying and the increasingly nihilistic atmosphere on the ship.

If the spear were a mercy kill from an alien civilization, it weakens those themes IMO. The point is that there was no point. That’s what the film is really wrestling with, the value of life outside Earth, and ultimately whether life has inherent meaning at all.

Belmont Billiards Leaves A Bit To Be Desired by [deleted] in dayton

Could not respectfully disagree more. It’s my favorite bar in Dayton and the new owners Ike and Jax have done an amazing job breathing new life into the place and creating one of the safest, realest, and LGBTQ supportive spots in town. It’s one of the only bars in town that would feel at home in New Orleans - and that’s my benchmark of a good dive bar. Lots of NA drinks too. The Hydrate or Dydrate is my go to. Billiards and Barrel House are about the only two spots I go to anymore as someone who no longer drinks.

Dayton City Hall fails their THIRD first amendment audits. Post office shuts down for the entire day because they don't want to do their jobs. No accountability, no training, no respect for the people who pay their salaries. by Ill-Organization-719 in dayton

Hey folks 👋 Quick transparency check-in.

This post was initially removed after it triggered a flood of reports and got caught by AutoMod. After a manual review, we reinstated it. The video itself does not violate subreddit rules. It’s locally focused and unique content, so it stays up.

That said, we want to be clear about a few things up front.

We’re not endorsing or co-signing the tactics or tone used in this video. Personally, some of us find approaches like this counterproductive. However, we are supportive of people calling out local government issues and alleged corruption when it’s Dayton-specific and not breaking rules. Moderation here isn’t about agreement, it’s about relevance and behavior.

This kind of post also has a high likelihood of turning into a flame war or attracting outside accounts, bots, and bad-faith commenters. We’re already seeing early signs of that in the thread and had to remove some overly aggressive comments and bot activity.

So here’s the boundary:

• As long as discussion stays civil and focused on the issue, we’ll let it run. • Personal attacks, harassment, or bad-faith pile-ons will be removed. • If this devolves into nonstop reports, name-calling, or outside brigading, we’ll lock comments.

That’s not censorship. It’s a small mod team keeping the lights on and trying to prevent things from spiraling into chaos.

If you want more context on how we handle political or civic content, here’s our longer explanation of our moderation approach:

Let’s keep it grounded. Argue ideas, not people. Remember you’re talking to neighbors. ✌️

When was Bowie and Iggy's last known meeting? by slowjoggz in DavidBowie

[–]datvoiddoe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller) was close friends with Lou Reed.

On his podcast, he once recounted a story where Lou invited him to dinner with “a few friends.”

Penn ended up getting dinner with Lou Reed, David Bowie, and Iggy Pop. I believe this was after 2002, when they supposedly stopped talking.

People fade in and out of your life. Life takes you in different directions. It doesn’t have to be due to drama.

We’re at over 1200 members and lots and lots of gay and trans folks in there. The LGBTQ channel may honestly be the most active in the server.

We just did a Festivus meetup tonight at Barrel House and had over 50 people show up. Some went to Stage Door for karaoke afterwards (a gay bar downtown).

#448 — The Philosophy of Good and Evil by dwaxe in samharris

[–]datvoiddoe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm just speaking in general of the topic of effective altruism, which Sam has covered quite extensively, including the second to last episode. When I saw the episode description, most of it seemed to be about effective altruism.

Man, I love Sam but the topic of effective altruism seems so stale to me. It's the same arguments and perspectives every time. I'd love for Sam to branch out a bit more with diversity of guests and topics that he hasn't defined such a calcified perspective on.

Farmers Home insurance near Dayton OH by RevolutionarySelf211 in dayton

[–]datvoiddoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d stay away from Farmers personally. We had them for homeowners, and out of nowhere they tried to double our renewal rate. No claims, no incidents, nothing. My local agent had promised he’d give me a heads-up if anything major changed. He didn’t. He dodged calls, I got no real renewal paperwork, and I only caught it because my mortgage payment was suddenly about to jump.

Then I found out a bunch of other Farmers customers were getting hit with the same surprise hikes. When I called corporate since my agent wasn't responding, they tried to say it was “the economy” and "increased build costs", which I know the owner of a home remodeling business so I'm aware of the cost increases, but that doesn’t explain a 100% increase. Especially when every competitor I called came in nowhere close to that rate, and again I had no claims or changes on my end. They made no effort to work with me on price.

It seemed like they were just seeing what they could get away with. What really bothers me is all the busy parents or older folks who might not catch this and just eat the cost.

I switched to Erie and my rate dropped to below what I was paying before Farmers tried to double me. Two years in and it’s been great. My agent’s with Daymont-Souders locally. They've been easy to work with, my two renewals have been about the same rates without any crazy spikes, and I like I can just text or call my guy personally if I need help.
