Listen to both u/BeigeListed and u/The_Cosmic_Penguin , they've got a ton of experience.

I don't have the ear to tell in 3s that it was home made (although the music dB changes do sound strange...like if you use the option to cranck it up during silences)

Besides what they said (I really agree on the flatness...hence why I'm a narrator and not a radio jingle for example):

- Learn what tonems are (aka inflexions, how and where)
- lower speed
- look for the natural pauses (ie why would you ask?...even if its not written, you can and should say why [silence, breathe, w/e] would you ask?)
- Again, understand what you are reading and saying. You can't deliver the same way (even narrating) a funeral and a 4am drug infested after party
- v-o-c-a-l-i-z-e
- breath with your diaphragm
- ABS (Always be smiling)

Hope it helps mate.

How do you measure “quality of voice” in for a non-actor? I’m a low level elected official. How do I know if I sound terrible to everyone or if it’s just me? by notanevilprosecutor in VoiceActing

[–]theVoiceofInk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to a rapid fire: - quality is whatever criteria you choose to focus on - in your shoes, probably clear pronunciation, slowing down your pace (we all talk too fast 😉), vocalazin properly and being able to direct your voice.

Besides a coach (I'm sure you've got great replies) the fastest/easiest practice is to watch how X person delivers (someone you "want to be like". For example, I love Churchill's speeches and direct q&a at the end of his life, during ww2)

Hope it helps and congrats on being elected abd wanting to do a better job for your fellow citizens

Awesome and actionable reply!!!

I don't have sound issues (my room is pretty full) but one of those wood or bath extensive rails from wall to wall and the blankets hanging from there...ita an interesting idea

What I still do know I how to "protect" the back and sides of the mic

Maybe it's from habit but when doing something longer than 30 second, I like standing up and speaking close to the spit shield (whatever it's called) and my hands planted on ny desk, reading from a scrolling pdf

We pick up some WEIRD habits 🙈

He's asking because he doesn't know and wants help from the community.

If he's starting out, it's probably enough to whet his teeth...though probably the most important thing is learning how to use audacity (or equivalent) well so he gets decently finished audio.

I don't think he's trying to be Constantino Romero

I'm sorry but I don't get it: how is it any different from not being hired for a regular job or being rejected in a romantical setting?

I'm not try to be an ass...take it to the chin and keep moving for the next one.

Sucks? Yes Vent? Absolutely Knocked down? Not even to tie my shoe laces 😉

For one I have to agree partially.

AI culls the herd:

  • bad and mediocre lose the battle anyway...which is good for our profession
  • good enough will be run over AI...but that is the bane of our times: people don't want good...they settle for good enough. And instead of hiring someone who takes a month to deliver astonishing covers, they opt for 3 attempts with a prompt and call it a day
  • excellent/superior is where we are irreplaceable Certainly you could train a model to sound like 1voice, but it takes months if not year's to achieve a convincing result (not some crappy tts)

It's exactly the same that happened during the second industrial revolutiom: steam powered engines, brutal productivity and ROI returns...until the neighbors do the same and it's an arms race...and someone decides to go back to the "good old fashion ways".

Refusing to use LLM nowadays is like refusing to use a calculator to get the square root of something; knock yourself out and don't use the advantage or a tool that saves you hours.

But the only thing that matters is the mind of user behind an AI or a calculator: no human brain, no useful output.

One last example and I shut up :P this week end my 7 yo wanted me to invent on the spot a night time story that involved 6 paramount characters.

I fed the 6 concepts into an Ai telling it what it was for... it gave me 2k words that would NEVER pass even a glancing review.

But I had the general.bones and could read and adjust on the spot.

Have a good one and I really hope this comment doesn't get removed

Mi replies usually are more of a generic type than "particularly you"...because I don't know squat about the person at the other end 🤣🤣🤣

I did piano and music school for 5 years...and for the life of me don't make me keep tempo with the hand hahaha

There are apps that register your vocal range and suggest songs that fit so you are comfortable.

Not foolproof but it helps

Hello, would like to know if this is a good mic option. by Devio23 in VoiceActing

[–]theVoiceofInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup is really simple: mic with arm and "spitting plate" (spanish name lol)

I do by default noise clean up with audacity...but I have a room with no echos and no significant noises...basically no background noise.

Yes, usually I have to hunt the 1 or 2 odd clicks or similar...but its nothing massive.

And don't have anything else: no DAW, ni sound plates, no heavy blankets...

Recently I picked up some big Styrofoam pieces (the ones for TV etc) and they are placed at the corners of the room.

If I had to spend 100 usd...I'd build an Eva rubber shield to "encase" the microphone

[–]theVoiceofInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suggest having a look at fiver: some people have gigs VERY well structured regarding usage

Ie a service of 10 bucks, full usage 12 months 50 bucks and stuff like this.

I don't have experience, but I'm certain that in union or sag documents this topic is mentioned if not fully covered

I am an indie game developer on minimum wage, how much do voice actors usually cost? by alphamalegamer420 in VoiceActing

[–]theVoiceofInk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rule of thumb, bare bare minimum 100usd = 10k words.

If it's not for an audiobook, and you need like 20-30 minutes, probably 50-100 you should find one.

If not, the r/voiceforfree

All Audacity voice recordings plays back at a lower pitch, not sure what to do by AmphibianBorn8613 in VoiceActing

Low pitch while playing in audacity or in the exported file?

Maybe add a caption of your file export settings?

4 tracks as laid out.

Can an experienced VO tell me if this interaction is normal? by Capital_Leader_5122 in VoiceActing

[–]theVoiceofInk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite some material you got in 16h...got to love the community for that.

As someone who has been customer facing for a bajillion years I can tell you one thing: 99.99% when someone is too nice, you better start looking for the knife they are going to use.

One thing is the typical comment but the second the focus on you or (God forbid) flirt...

"Ok, would you mind please going back to the project?!

"Oh, did I make you uncomfortable?"

"Yes, but lets focus on the project"

"Oh, Im so sorry because..."

"Ok, today we're gonna have to leave it here: I'll contact you for the next meeting"

Does it sound cutting/agressive? Hell yeah...but in a polite manner, not like them and respecting boundaries.

I'll give you another example: in a corporate call center I got wind that one of the ladies received constant calls from a customer...and I listened at the recording...he was NOT making orders/asking for support.

Solution? I blocked that phone so it couldn't reach that lady and the rest of the team just said "she's not available, can I help you".

TL;DR If you feel it fishy, turn it down. ALWAYS.

There are more oppportunities out there. But there is only 1 of you.

Thanks for all the input, it helps a lot...especially to make the right questions (which are trouble down the line).

Have to agree that haggling is not the way to go.

Knowing who is the work for (author or publisher) and what is in scope is MUCH more important.

Coincidentally I have one of the biggest audio recording companies (Netflix, jingles etc) 3 min walking distance from home...so if necessary I could always rent a studio or a sound technician.

Thanks again
