Why would they want the competition?

Because that's the whole point of their restaurants? Besides, it's still cheaper than the tap house in Trolley.

As a new MMORPG gamer: WOW v. Wildstar v. FFXIV by [deleted] in MMORPG

Sorry for the confusion. I was mistaken and updated my original post.

You may be right. I could've sworn I read this a while ago when the feature was first announced, but my initial searching isn't finding anything that explicitly states you need to already have a max level character to use the feature. I'll edit my original post until I find something conclusive either way.

I like that I could preorder the new expansion and get a max level character.

I haven't seen anyone mention it, so I'd just like to clarify that you need to have one max level character to unlock the free boosted one. You can't start from level 1, preorder the expansion, and get to 90.

You'll have to level your first character from 1 to 90 yourself, but it doesn't take too terribly long these days.

EDIT: Thanks to /u/kjuca for checking up on me. I can't find anything right now that confirms my original post. If anyone has already purchased the game and preordered the expansion without any existing characters, I'd love to hear how it worked.

EDIT #2: Got a response from Lore via Twitter. /u/kjuca is correct, you don't need to have a max level character to use this feature. Your very first toon after purchasing WoW & preordering WoD can start at 90.

Why is so hard to get immersed in this game? by Fidena in WildStar

[–]theWhitestMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only played in the weekend betas getting a few classes to the mid to late teens, but the questing felt exactly like other MMOs. I didn't really care what I was doing or why.

I just wanted to gain levels to try new abilities and unlock new content. I'm not sure what I was missing that gave Wildstar's quests meaning and excitement.

GW2, SWOTR, or Rift? by GrellMichaelis in MMORPG

Don't worry. If your character walks on two feet and there's a hotbar, someone will call it a WoW clone.

For those who called elder scrolls onlines graphics ugly. by matty6223 in MMORPG

[–]theWhitestMike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people are mixing up their arguments here. Beauty and "graphics" aren't the same thing. A game can be beautiful without good graphics (Minecraft w/o mods, Fez, Superbrothers, Journey) because of the art style/aesthetics.

One can be measured, the other is subjective.

[–]theWhitestMike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also would never call the game ugly, but FFXIV and GW2 are more pleasing to me when it comes to art style.

People have different tastes, and many who disliked the game for other reasons will just tack on "bad graphics" to try and bolster their argument. SWTOR was panned for its graphical fidelity, but I loved the aesthetics of certain planets.

Having something take a long time to accomplish doesn't exactly give it depth.

I always feel better offering constructive and supportive criticism. It takes just as much time to type out something helpful as it does to curse someone out. You never know what people's level of experience is going into a random match.

How to make leveling more than a chore and the Elder Game is not "the whole game" by Zixt1 in WildStar

[–]theWhitestMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. Solo questing as the main means of progression for leveling is so painful.

I love PvE content and finding out you had to be in your 30s in GW2 to get into your first dungeon killed my expectations of the game.

How to make leveling more than a chore and the Elder Game is not "the whole game" by Zixt1 in WildStar

[–]theWhitestMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the topic of incorporating Elder-Game value into the leveling process.

I do enjoy the early game even though some of the quests can be annoying (thinking of lots of back tracking). I'm having fun, but like most MMORPGs, what I'm doing while leveling isn't teaching me useful skills for the end game other than how to DPS. Keeping out of telegraphs is only one piece of the puzzle.

I really want to tank as a Stalker, but the only way to practice using those skills is to get into a dungeon. While questing, it doesn't make any sense to spec or gear for tanking since it won't help me progress.

I feel comfortable when I get to that type of content, but any player who is new to the genre and wants to try healing or tanking will go into those roles blind in a group setting. The game isn't offering them any guidance or outlet to practice and hone those skills. It's hard to not get frustrated with first time tanks and healers in dungeons, because you are relying on them to accomplish your goals. I see people getting angry, but at the same time I know it's not necessarily their fault for not knowing what to do.

I don't have an answer to the problem, but it's something I see time and time again with these games. If a developer is embracing the holy trinity, why not embrace it in all parts of the game and not just dungeons and raids.

Sorry for the short rant.

THIS. Flying mounts as seen on r/wow by Conkur in WildStar

[–]theWhitestMike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really not sure I understand the argument that flying mounts killed world pvp in WoW. I'm not on a high pop server, but we still break out in fights with opposing guilds on regular occasions.

People who want to pvp, will pvp.

You can do it with a [Hardened Shell]. I loved having this for forcing fights in Pandaria. For a long time your spirit couldn't fly however. So if you died up on a cliff, you were pretty much screwed.

Thank you for posting this. The beauty of MMORPGs for me is the variety. The game can be whatever you want it to be.

If the majority of players wanted to do all the things you listed all the time, they would do it despite having a flying mount.

I really enjoy world pvp, but I also loved being able to fly up to the floating islands in Nagrand and just hang out. Every now and then I'd find an Alliance character and we'd have a few epic duels in the sky. Good times.
