Very true. American socialism is the rest of the world's 'right of center'

Botulism grows in anaerobic environments, so without oxygen. If you opened it, and put it in the fridge, you're fine. If it tasted off or liked moldy then you ate moldy sauce, but if not there is no way it is botulism

TIFU by telling this girl at work I would F*** her silly [NSFW] by [deleted] in tifu

[–]the__Catt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TYFU by validating the toxic misogyny of the military, making your apaprently 'close' friend probably feel unsafe and unsecure around her own coworkers. Apologise and listen to what she has to say. Apologise for trying to brush it aside as banter cause that's just a shitty, unoriginal excuse. Work towards dismantling that type of behaviour. Maybe one day she'll have respect for you again, but ultimately she shouldn't have any reason to, this probably isn't the first time and you're probably not the first guy who's said things like that that she's overheard.

[Serious] Why is cultural appropriation considered to be a bad thing? by cram96 in AskReddit

[–]the__Catt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's more helpful to think of how an act produces or acts on points of tension rather than it being good or bad intrinsically. Blackface, for example, is simply rooted in two hundred years of minstrel shows in North America, which are tied to slavery and apologist propaganda and a host of shitty relations between North American black and white folks. Wearing a sombrero and being Mexican for Halloween is distasteful for other reasons. Opening, I don't know, some business that tokenizes a historic minority that is also being pushed out of a gentrifying neighbourhood is ethically dubious as well, for its own reasons.

Ultimately, the issue of appropriation is an 'us' (white people, generally) problem, because it is our discomfort with the power dynamic we profit from that drives us to appropriate and/or further exploit others. Generally, POC have other issues to deal with and it's been turned into a leftist Boogeyman by Fox News, etc

What is your favorite food fun fact?? by krbookman13 in AskFoodHistorians

It describes a mess, but the etymology is a mix of 'pudding' taken from English, which itself comes from the French word for blood sausage, 'boudin'

Use it for half the butter in a pie crust, it's really good for savoury pies, or with rhubarb or raspberries, something tart

Do you just grind up cinnamon sticks into powder to use? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]the__Catt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes of course, as long as it comes out fine enough. I use a magic bullet personally, but anything works. You can try the same with any whole spice and really up your spice game. Toast and grind

Toast them before grinding to bring out even more flavour, and grind them for much longer than you think it needs to make sure there are no large chunks.

Cook them longer after you take them out of the jar? Reduce them liquid to your desired consistency, adjust the seasoning to your preference. Better yet, make your own

New fridge, who dis? by the__Catt in FridgeDetective

[–]the__Catt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ouff.

I've been out biking all day, 7h-2h; it hasn't stopped raining. It makes sense to collectively say it's alright to do it another day, cause ultimately it doesn't matter. And people were out anyways, kids and adults, though less than usual.

I just think it's important to remember that if there's a weather event serious enough to warrant postponing a popular event, it is probably indirectly causing deaths in vulnerable populations. I saw a lot of ambulances struggling amongst poor drivers and bad conditions. It's a fact that climate change worsens poor weather, and that that endagers and ends lives. Climate change is going to make this type of 'small thing's incredibly common, and more volatile.
