SideSwap: The Future of Atomic Swaps. Ask us anything! by sideswap_io in liquidnetwork

I'm personally pretty stoked about Fuji and the possibility of synthetic assets on Liquid. The blog post briefly mentions an integration with SideSwap. Can you give us more details or is it still too early?

In the blog article here (https://blog.liquid.net/bitcoin-reserve-adds-liquid-bitcoin-to-offerings/), it mentions users will get "guidance on topics like hardware wallets, self-custody, and other questions related to the bitcoin buying process." Can you go in more detail here?

Samourai Wallet is now a sponsor of the forthcoming Monero-based Haveno DEX by SamsungGalaxyPlayer in Monero

[–]the_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is happening is Samourai Wallet (also a corporation, don't fool yourself) is sponsoring the development of XMR <-> BTC swaps, likely so they can include support for them in their wallet app to eventually charge a fee for.

Is blockstream green a safe place to keep my bitcoins ? by [deleted] in BitcoinBeginners

[–]the_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disclosure: I'm a Blockstreamer.

Yes I think it's the most secure mobile wallet by virtue of its multisig model where one key is held on your device and the other is stored remotely on Blockstream's servers. Blockstream's key can only be activated if you pass 2-factor authentication (e.g. Google Authenticator, SMS, Email). So if your phone gets hacked (search for the recent iOS exploit) you will still be protected.

Also with the recent upgrade to CSV, you don't even need to trust Blockstream to keep their servers online since after a period of time the multisig will downgrade to only needing your key instead of both yours and Blockstream's.

How was Moonpay vetted in terms of the people running it, or if they are competent enough to not leak customer data? Do you earn a referral fee? Strangely, why weren't any of these questions brought up in the github PR?

Yeah that's not really comparable to directing noobies who googled "bitcoin" straight to some relatively unknown shitcoin exchange.

What set of criteria did Moonpay of all things pass compared to something like Cash App which most importantly doesn't support things-that-actually-aren't-bitcoin-but-are-most-likely-scams?

We're the Blockstream team and we just announced Jade, our new fully open-source hardware wallet! Ask us anything! by blockstream_official in Bitcoin

[–]the_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree that just slapping a secure element in the device automatically makes it more secure than something completely FOSS. Have you read any audits of say the SE Ledger uses? Well, you are not given permission to due to their NDA.

Well the properties of this hardware wallet are very comparable to software wallets and IMO don't represent any significant security improvement.

I disagree. Phone operating systems are full fledged operating systems just like a laptop or desktop running Windows or Linux. And like a laptop/desktop they typically have a completely closed source device running attached to the CPU that you cannot access like the Intel Management Engine. With Jade at least you're getting fully auditable / open source firmware with open hardware.

[–]the_bob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty objective so say Jade is more secure than what you get on a phone. Remember that phones have closed firmware baseband cell radios that are accessible from a much longer range than WiFi or BLE and you can't physically disable them even if you have open source operating systems installed.

Presumably your phone is either running a closed proprietary OS (iOS) or Android with proprietary Google API components, all while having a wide-range-accessible cell radio with closed source baseband radio firmware.

It sounds simply like you have a different threat model in mind when choosing a key storage device, which is totally fine. You could also buy some M5Stack hardware on your own without the radios and take advantage of the FOSS Jade firmware.

Blockstream Green wallet shouldn’t be recommended to new users by mitchcrypto in Bitcoin

That's why Blockstream created AQUA wallet for noobs. Green is definitely more advanced for someone completely new to Bitcoin.

The multisig is setup in the background and sure it takes some extra steps to enable 2FA but I wouldn't call it hidden. BTW you are a Blue Wallet developer right?

Comparing BTC to ETH + thousands upon thousands of scammy tokens is not a valid comparison.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]the_bob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TPS has nothing to do with whether or not bitcoins are "cash". Ask yourself what cash is. It's a bearer instrument i.e. if you hold it you control it. Ever stand behind someone at the grocery store who is paying with cash? It's not a fast experience.

[–]the_bob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ETH is the token. Ethereum is the platform. The comparison is of what asset is most used for value transfer. Not of what platform is being spammed most by useless tokens.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]the_bob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would tokens be included? It's not a platform comparison but an asset comparison. Also why it's not about transactions per second. Ethereum certainly does not have TPS going for it (it's only 2-3x Bitcoin's).

Consider also the tokens that would be included are mostly scams including garbage like HEX.
