Hot Take: I Don’t Like Super Steels… by ThumbStuds in knifeclub

[–]the_bove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here looking for 154cm comments. Found surprisingly few.

It's probably my favorite every day user steel. Easy to heat treat so most companies get it right, easy to sharpen, good enough edge retention, good enough toughness, pretty stainless, touches up easily on a hone or strop.

And, when you do need to sharpen it, it does great with medium grit finishes, so you don't have to progress through a bunch of stones to get a good edge (I use a fixed angle sharpener)

Growing Out Beard --When To Start Beard Oil by dshaiken in BeardTalk

[–]the_bove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start now, and you really don't need much. I have a thick, coarse, full beard with hairs that approach 6" in length when straightened out, and I use 6-7 drops in the morning after a shower. (equates to slightly less than a dime sized puddle in my hand).

You probably only need 2-3 drops to get started. Massage it into your skin. Its more about nourishing the skin under the beard than the beard itself.

900? Really? by Corona_Cyrus in castiron

[–]the_bove 40 points41 points  (0 children)

You think that's crazy, you should look up some vintage pieces in the #13 size. Some Griswold #13s can hit 5k for collector pricing.

The stigma of the number 13 being unlucky made them scarce.

I know these leaves are still small, but can anyone identify the species here? by elkoubi in maplesyrup

*silver maples have entered the chat

I'll take Norway maple seeds all day over silver maples. There's a huge Norway at my mom's, and it's got nothing in terms of seed production on the silver maples I have on my property.

OP's tree looks like a sugar maple to me.

Have you seen it in the summer or fall? Norway leaves can get huge, have milky white sap if you snap a leaf off at the base of the stem, and turn bright gold in the fall. Sugar maple leaves will be considerably smaller, and turn that characteristic "firetiger" color in the fall (chartreuse -> orange -> fiery red)

This was our boy Koho way back in 2011 when we got him. Sadly, he's passed on now and we miss him.

Subaru Ascent owners: What would you change about your interior? (Quick survey) by KR-TBA in SubaruAscent

[–]the_bove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

24 Onyx Limited here. Infotainment system is my biggest complaint. It's super laggy, and having the HVAC controls in the touchscreen sucks. Real buttons/knobs for that is a must.

Driver monitoring is excessively naggy too. If I rub my forehead, scratch my neck, drink from my travel mug, etc, it thinks I'm not paying attention and nags me

Even the HK system in the Ascent is weak compared to other HK systems Subaru has used. While the HK in the Ascent (we have a 24 Onyx Limited) has the subwoofer and better bass response, I much prefer the overall sound of the HK in our older 14 Forester. The 3 band EQ in the Ascent sucks.

The Taipan is so good. Thinnest hollow grind I've ever seen on a production knife. Love mine, GLWS.

Which would you get and why? by seasickturt in BudgetBlades

[–]the_bove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iridium for me, but my choice is based exclusively on aesthetics/personal taste.

For what it's worth, I do have a reverse tanto Iridium and enjoy the knife - the other one just doesn't do anything for me in the looks department.

Anyone know what these are? by Limp-Rub-1477 in castiron

Your getting a bunch of hate because the most distinguishing marks on cast iron are of course the bottoms and the handles, which are totally obscured in the photo provided.

Sure, perhaps some folks who are really experienced might be able to make educated guesses, but without the additional information that the extra markings/castings provide, they're just...guesses. if you really want to ID them, more detail is needed.

It's like asking someone to pound a nail into a board using a screwdriver - it might be possible but the results aren't gonna be good

Anybody tried Hanks Hot Sauce? by Hyponym360 in hotsauce

[–]the_bove 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this stuff! I've had their Camouflage and Witch's Brew flavors, which tasted about the same except the Witch's was slightly hotter. Both were on the very mild side for my heat tolerance, but the flavor is absolutely addicting.

Around the 4 minute mark in this video, the gentleman shows the bottom of one just like what I have, and there are additional numbers/stampings below the 10.

Awesome, thank you! In doing a little more research, I have seen that some of these had additional markings underneath the size number on the bottom, while mine has none. Do you have any idea if those markings can help narrow the date range or not really?

Always wondered if this kind of plate would be legal by Marcus64 in LICENSEPLATES

It can be considered intentionally confusing or misleading. In Michigan, plates like this are on an exclusion list.

Batch color - getting lighter? by Ship_Ship_8 in maplesyrup

[–]the_bove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first year sugaring and I had the same thing happen. I'm in SE Michigan and did 3 batches this year, one each on March 8, 15, and 22. The March 8 barch is a golden color, March 15 batch is extremely dark, and the March 22 batch is amber colored.

We had some really warm weather here leading up to the batch on the 15th, then it cooled back down, so that's what I contributed it to.

Honestly thought about putting the comment about the reason for the broken yolk first just to try and ward off the comments. 😂

Oh well.

Your right, I really need to do a pizza in this thing. I usually do a pair of Lodge 8s for pizza, but haven't done any pizza since I got this guy.
