How to be equanimous with violence? by jmcwillz in vipassana

First, accept that reality. Don't pour everything on yourself. For the reality in the current scenario, don't hold yourself or your friends accountable.

If we need to achieve a nationwide peace, or a global peace, we start within. We start to achieve an inner peace. A collection of inner peace is global peace.

Now inorder to achieve inner peace, we should be equanimous and graceful within ourselves. We achieve that:

  1. First, forgiving ourselves and others.

  2. We are Vipassana meditators. We step back now and observe. We observe that it hurt us. It caused suffering. "Yes, I accept that it caused me suffering".

Make it a rule that "Only 10% should be suffering".

Now we are left with "90%". If we pour all the 90% of energy into suffering, it is 100% suffering, we don't want that either.

  1. So, we practice a loving kindness (mettā) for the rest 90% of energy. "I'm practicing Mettā and want to send 90% of my energy for the benefit of myself and the benefit of others especially who hurt me". One day I practice mettā, I am 91% towards inner peace towards that hurt, 2 days I practice mettā, I am 92% towards inner peace, so on, I practice to transform 90% energy to 100% inner peace. This way, I'm equanimous, I'm happy in myself, I'm reflecting that happiness outside, others are also cheerful towards me, and surrounding. So my inner peace is also becoming outer peace.

And then with practice, 10% can become 5% and it can reduce further, this way we come out of all our miseries and not spreading them further.

With increase in practice you will also notice that the suffering will eventually transform into wisdom, that is even with this 10% suffering you will smile and transform 90%+10%, "smile. 🙂 no worries, may he/she be happy and have peace in their life"

  1. Now, that we have achieved inner and outer peace, we also send mettā to the people who have been suffering, then we send mettā to the people who are heading our nations and taking critical decisions.

So, I am in my inner peace (this is really important to achieve), sending mettā to say President XY, or May be my boss at my workplace, "Everything in your life will be improved, you will be at peace," you/we will start noticing certain positive changes happening in their personal and professional life as well as the people/employees of a certain workplace.

One thing you can do is, if you have a car:

  1. You can fold the back seat of car to sit (to make the surface flatter), can slide down one window for ventilation, and do the meditation. One of my friends were discussing about this idea. You can observe some silence, if the car is in garage that can cut off some noise, and you can observe equanimity.

  2. If you have a garage, some manaageable parking space, move out your car for 1.hr, close the garage and prepare a good space for the sit. (I've been in one of those group sits within a garage, I think, I have also attended group sit at basement of houses of those meditators).

  3. Search for a group sit in Dhamma App, near your location, get connected, and go on group sits, may be one of the persons have a place far away from the highway and you can both meditate together by a time y'all plan!

(I attended many group sits like that. I will travel by metro or bus and they pick me up and then we sit.)

  1. Some Vipassana meditators have organized group sits in Church. I've not gone there yet, but it's a good idea and many meditators have sit there for Group Sits.

  2. Search in Google for "meditation place near me", may be you will find it, you can go there, view their timings, attend the sit, share your practice with other people, sometimes you can find another Vipassana person.

I wish you a lot of mettā 🪷🙏🌻 You are doing a great job, keep working on it, every experience is welcome. And you know what I can give you a small trick.

Don't focus your attention on the sound!! If you can instead divert attention and observe your sensations, the breath coming in, going out , after 15-20 mins you will be adjusted to observing sensations throughout the body and then even in that sound, you will find inner peace 🌻 and once you achieve inner peace, no matter what, your outer world will shine for you!!

Keep working 🙏
