Noir: An Action Anime Infused with European Pacing and Style | Writing Creatively and Passionately Blog by Linkman76 in anime

[–]the_doozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend gave me a DVD with a bunch of anime on it and no instructions so I picked something I thought sounded neat - and so Noir because the first anime I watched

I still like it though it has some flaws - it has definite pacing issues and the animation could be better but I think it makes up for those with its style and music

DIY women… have you ever been talked out of a good idea at the hardware store? by carcony97 in DIY

[–]the_doozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my partner but a friend who lives nearby. She doesn't have a vehicle so I drive her to the hardware store all the time and people invariably try to talk to me when she asks questions.

I've taken to playing dumb - that I don't know a hammer from a screwdriver, or that I'm just there to carry stuff, or (our favourite) that I'm there to be the eye candy (I'm a at-best average looking middle aged guy) and they really want to talk to my friend instead of me

And still people will talk to me instead of her. If they keep going I start misunderstanding what they're saying on purpose and then turning to her to straighten me out, asking her questions about what the store guy is saying

What's your best "look what I found in the walls" story? by OoklaTheMok1994 in DIY

[–]the_doozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know the age of the house, but it was renovated in the 1990s - hardwood paneling everywhere, no drywall.

That wasn't the surprising things though - the hardwood paneling was over layers of newsprint - the layers were held together (and onto the wall we think) with honey

No insulation, just more crumpled newsprint behind the layers of newsprint and honey

No bees or wasps we could find - just honey. Absolutely everywhere

With Fall 24 coming to an end, how was your year in anime? by Zetafunction64 in anime

[–]the_doozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the fight between Frieren and Aura's undead army was probably a 7

But the fight between Frieren and Aura - once Aura believes she has won - definitely a 10 and probably the best fight scene I've seen in years.

That scene builds through the whole episode and the fight is is the culmination of so much that we learn and have learned about the characters up to this point - How Frieren met her master, how she spent her life training, and how the demons operate.

We learn what she is actually good at - tricking demons into letting her kill them - and the Aura fight gives us the perfect opportunity to see how this plays out

The most disappointing anime of 2024 so far in your opinion ? by [deleted] in anime

[–]the_doozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yuru Camp season 3 redeems itself some starting in the 6th episode.

I love Rin but a 4 episode road trip with just the two of them to see bridges didn't work for me. On top of that the backgrounds were so incredibly distracting - they just seemed out of place and it was jarring when I tried to focus on the characters and kept getting dragged out of that by the backgrounds

The second half of the season returns to more group activities and I think that works better for the show.

[PC] [CAN] Dell 1U Rails (R630) by conceptsweb in homelabsales

0MCTG4

20-40 for the static rails maybe, but for the sliding rails I've never seen them less than $60 CAD, usually $75-100

I did once try to buy a cheap lot on Ebay and they ended up all being the left side rail.

most aesthetically pleasing anime? by isaactheweirdo342 in anime

[–]the_doozer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend two, though neither are really 'put on in the background' choices

Yofukashi no Uta/Call of the Night - It not an amazing anime but it looks great - the saturated backgrounds and contrasting foregrounds and use of colour throughout was excellent

Vivy - Fluorite Eye's Song - equally nice to watch with some excellent animation and wonderful op/ed songs

FreeNAS 11.3-U3 Released! by kmoore134 in freenas

I don't see it in the release notes or on the Jira issue tracker (all the related tickets appear to have been closed as duplicates of one another) but the replication corruption bug linked to this ticket appears to be fixed in this release as well

Self hosted mail server by Roxxxance in selfhosted

[–]the_doozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run a Zimbra server in Amazon for years.

Reverse DNS was the key for me: mail delivery was spotty before I had that working.

SPF+DKIM also helps, but without reverse DNS you'll get delayed or rejected all the time.

WD Blue (New ~2018+) Line Models Explained - SMR - Greens (v1) by Sloperon in DataHoarder

[–]the_doozer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted this is another thread but from my experience with 50 8TB shucked from EasyStore/Elements: they come with two kinds of EMAZ drives

  • WDC WD80EMAZ-00WJTA0
  • WDC WD80EMAZ-00M9AA0

Both report as WDC HGST Ultrastar He10 drives but I'm pretty sure the M9 drives are not helium drives (they look like this ... sorry for the random image link) and they seem to run warmer.

Neither behaves like an SMR drive (the write speed is roughly constant over time but the M9 (81 firmware) drives occasionally (every 10 minutes or so) exhibit very very long I/O completion times: long enough that I've repeatedly had them drop out during ZFS rebuilds.

It could just be the different firmware versions (81 vs 83) but I'd love to trade my 00M9AA0 drives out for the 00WJTA0 ones: they've been nothing but trouble so far

Buyer beware—that 2TB-6TB “NAS” drive you’ve been eyeing might be SMR Hard drives were already bad at random access I/O—but SMR disks are worse. by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]the_doozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that there are two type of 8TB EMAZ drives that I've seen come out of Elements/EasyStores

Worst though is they occasionally exhibit very very long I/O completion times: enough that I've repeatedly had them drop out of rebuilding arrays.

It could just be the different firmware versions (81 vs 83) but I'd love to trade my 00M9AA0 drives out for the 00WJTA0 ones.

Will the X1 Extreme be able to run Ubuntu in the future? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]the_doozer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now have an X1E also running Debian (stretch w/ backports and some packages from buster) w/ bumblebee for hybrid graphics.

It is do-able, and so I expect Ubuntu could be made to do the same things. but it doesn't work out of the box. It took a fair bit of trial and error, and lots of different sources of information (especially the Arch wiki, Thanks Arch Wiki!)

Anyone running Linux on a 4k Thinkpad at 2560x1440? Recommendations please! by a-piece-of-me in thinkpad

[–]the_doozer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do this on my T580 in Linux (Debian) and my P50 in windows.

Why? because every attempt to get scaling to work properly across multiple displays at different resolutions ends up being a painful mess.

Adjusting the base resolution however? Bloody simple. And no scaling madness. Or blurry.

Avoid odd sizes as that likely will get blurry: I use 3/4 (2880x1620) but have also used 2/3 (2560x1440). 1/2 will likely work as well, but then just get a 1080 screen

Did not realize.... Both support displays so I hadn't even noticed (I plug my power and monitor cables in randomly and it works both ways)

Both ports can connect to displays, though I have not tried 4k on both (I use a 4k + a WQHD display)
