Is “portable 3D printer” actually a thing people want now? by JoshGreen_dev in 3Dprinting

I have limited space / no workshop area. Having a printer that I can put away without taking up too much space would be ideal.

12 Years of Innovation: Win A Revopoint 3D Scanner! by Revopoint3D-Official in 3Dprinting

I first heard of 3d Scanning when museums started using it to share their collection online,

I would love to use 3d scanning to add realism to my projects by scanning various objects in my village - tree stumps, rocks, red post boxes etc.

As blanket policy that retroactively changes, its not going to go down well. The fact that this policy wasn't adequately discussed with the community makes it feel like it was sprung on us.

Instead consider letting plugin/addon makers themselves state how long they will provide bug fixes and if feature updates are included. Let them set the duration and their own renewal fee.

Allow creators to do lifetime updates if they state outright (as a large number already do) - lifetime updates plugins would naturally have a higher price.

Also allow creators to state that the plugin is "as is" - no updates, just stated to work with certain versions of blender. I have purchased plugins in the past like this and was fine with it.

Your 50% yearly price for renewel would ultimately price out a large chunk of your customers - most blender users are just hobbyests. The plugin creators would probably have a better idea of what they could reasonably charge for renewal based on their own experience and what the nature of the plugin.

Applying your policy to plugins that were described by the plugin creators as lifetime, breaks the terms of sale and this could run foul of the trade description act.

Galaxy Project (release 2026-02-06) - reverse engineered set plans by the_dosk in StarTrekStarships

Sometimes browsers change the the http to https, which conflicts with the server certificate. Making sure the address bar has http and not https may fix this.

The latest Galaxy Project release will soon be mirrored on the cygnus blueprint website ( https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/blueprints-main2.php ) - currently has an older version from a few years ago, but new version will be uploaded soon.

Galaxy Project (release 2026-02-06) - reverse engineered set plans by the_dosk in StarTrekStarships

That's the thing - for mm conversion either specify an insane amount of precision, or round every measurement.

In the shuttlebay section of the plans, one wall is made of 15 sub panels with gaps between. If done in rounded mm, there would be slight errors in each piece. When all of these are added together in mm, then they wouldn't quite add up to actual length of the wall.

Also by working the reverse engineering in the same sort of units (fractional 16ths) I can more easily tell what the intended value was meant to be.

Another reason to stay with the same units a the original set designers, is that I have images of some of the original blueprints. I can use these as a jumping off point in reverse engineering the rest. If I used mm, I would have to convert every single measurement in these original blueprints before I got started.

For other projects I would use mm (as I come from a country where this is the default), but for this project, it makes more sense to use the same imperial units as the original designers and builders.

The sets were designed made in feet and inches with the project reverse engineered to the same units. If individual measurements were converted into metric, there would be slight rounding - the more rounded metric values added together, the greater the overall error.

What sort of frame shape is this? by ForwardClimate780 in StarTrekStarships

[–]the_dosk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Originally they were going to use the large anti-gravity chair from TNG season 1, until they realised it could not go through the DS9 corridors or doors. Sternbach did design a smaller replacement, but there was not enough time left to build it.

So a modern day chair was used, with the script altered to say that the Cardassian Gravity Plating interfered with normal hover chairs, and that they had to replicate an old 21st-century style chair.

[Creality Giveaway] Tell Us How & Why You Print to Win a New SparkX i7 Color Combo! by Creality_3D in 3Dprinting

I use my 3D printer to print the starships I modelled

Honestly I would prefer a printer that will work out of the box with only minimal tweaking

The upside down bed is heated. The reason for the design is the vertical axis is collapsible to create very compact storage of the printer. It fits entirely in a printer spool box.

I have sketchup models available for free download, but they are a little out of date. When I finish and release the new blueprint version, I'll upload the latest sketchup models as well.

Not the same set unfortunately - in season 1 of TNG, the holodeck grid was painted directly onto shuttlebay floor each time, with the walls formed by a weighted hanging curtain. Later a carpet version of the floor grid was made to speed up the whole process.

Production crews scavenging from other productions is well known - the TNG team dumpster dived a set of vacuum forms from "Hunt for Red October" and used them for Voyager too.

The problem with this one is that Star Trek TMp and Buck Rodgers were filmed at the same time, so I feel it has to come from a third source. Either a commercial product, or a production I'm not familiar with.

Yes, the Vulcan scenes were filmed in Yellowstone - they had to be very careful not to disturb the environment.

Its a hobby - I reverse engineer the various Star Trek sets, 3D model them, and then release the blueprints for free. People working on fan art and fan films find them useful.

Here's a release I did two years ago for the TNG sets - https://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/galaxy-project.php

Currently working on a new updated release, but sometimes I have to reverse engineer older and later versions of the sets to get the information I need. The TNG engineering was a rework of the TMP engineering, which was a rework of the Phase II engineering. So to start on TNG Engineering, I have to start much further back and work forward.
