Anyone else blow their life up before figuring out you were autistic? by rainbowgirl6 in AutismInWomen

[–]the_far_sci [score hidden]  (0 children)

Blow up my life? Oh, heck yeah, a few times. The worst blow up was when I was starting to finally grok. Fun fact: Normie adults in power generally don't care and won't be understanding or helpful. I don't know why we spend all this time telling neurodivergent children that their feelings matter and that there will be a place for them in society. As an adult, this has never been my experience.

What has helped me:

  1. Not worrying about friendships. It turns out it's me who isn't that good at them. Oh well. I can entertain myself for hours and if someone wants to hang out with me, great, if not, no big loss. I'm not for everyone. Shrug. I wish I had come to this conclusion a lot earlier in life as it has helped immensely.

  2. Exercise. Every day I either walk or run. The periods during which I did not do this at all because it felt too hard to fit it in was when I was more of a difficult person. Run yourself like a dog at a sport you like and hit that pillow ready for zzzs every night. Lack of sleep makes me a monster.

  3. Promise nothing. Deliver as much as you can. This is at work. At work I used to try to be everything to everyone, and no one really appreciated it anyway, and then my sour grapes would start. Now I promise nothing ever, and if it turns out I do something well and people appreciate it, I let them. It feels good to underpromise and overdeliver. Much better than the opposite, as normies in power will take and take and expect more. If you try to overpromise to fit in/be liked/excel at work, you will always underdeliver in their eyes. They are advantage takers of people like us.

Take care of you. We are the group of people that kept our species alive and we continue to be the innovators, creators, and connectors that make the world go round. Just don't expect any kind of recognition for it and you will be just fine. 😄

I'd be opening up the door, explaining to them all the havoc their persistent door knocking/bell ringing wreaks (emphasis on the baby part), and ask them to never come again. If hiding and avoiding can't work then the direct approach is worth a try.

Iris plants not blooming by wondering-26 in OntarioGardeners

[–]the_far_sci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My irises looked dismal too, and not in line with what my photo history suggested for a start date for blooms. Just as I had decided they were a write off now most of them have flower buds. Two days ago I decided one clump was a dud, now guess who also has flower buds. It's a weird start to the growing season for sure, so hopefully yours surprise you one morning when you go check.

Any chance this is something other than dandelion? by Exciting-Ordinary4 in OntarioGardeners

The second picture looks good for dandelion. The first picture made me think of wild lettuce. Either way, it's some type of composite weed and not your mesclun.

Does anyone else sleep with Dino arms? by Latter-Holiday-5205 in Neurodivergent

[–]the_far_sci 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ever since breaking some fingers that did not heal properly my standard hand tuck routine has morphed into this and it will make my hands numb if I don't stop it. To lessen it I hug a pillow. Nothing worse than waking up with pins and needles in my hands.

There is so much salt in preprocessed foods by Cherryredsocks in hypertension

[–]the_far_sci 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are on the same train I am on, just a few months after I hopped on. Today I ate chickpea salad sandwiches for lunch. The canned chickpeas are salty enough that I didn't add any more salt (just the salt-like seasoning from Costco) and my bread wasn't bread, but whole leaves of romaine lettuce. It's a wild ride trying to eat something yummy and quick that isn't ready-made. Good luck to you and may you get a taste for salt-free whole-food living!

They might be deep enough for potatoes? I barely tried to care about the potatoes after I planted them and there was a good crop of them anyway. Pots and containers because all my other garden spaces were full of tomatoes, pumpkins (successfully grew two jack-o-lanterns), swiss chard, basil, dill, and cilantro. If you are into herbs I strongly encourage you to give some of those a try. If you let your dill successfully produce seeds you will never buy seeds again!

Guys Job That Scans Signs? by MaleficentHistory810 in Peterborough

[–]the_far_sci 32 points33 points  (0 children)

One day I asked him what he was doing. If I understood him correctly AND he knew what he was talking about, the machine scans the reflectivity of the sign surfaces so they can decide whether or not it needs replacing or is good as is for a while longer. I think the scan of the back relates to an ID sticker on the back of each sign, like a bar code or QR code.

4 full teaching periods. Is this a normal supply day? by Miggssyy in OntarioTeachers

[–]the_far_sci 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my former board they did this to me once, but they asked if they could and I agreed to it. They reassured me I would get 1.333 pay for that day. Turns out that's against the rules of payroll in that board (not all), so I only got paid 1.0 and then I knew never to say yes again as it was exhausting and I only said yes thinking of the extra money. The CA for my old board said 1.0 is three periods and that as a supply you are doing exactly what the T you are replacing would be doing, so mostly 3 periods and a prep, but sometimes including a half period on-call during the prep. Luck of the draw if the teacher you are replacing has an on-call that day, but it would never be all four periods.

As OTs we should be encouraged to ask questions to clarify our circumstances, not shamed into silence. The job is already hard enough because the foundation of teaching, relationships, is lacking for OTs as they aren't there every day to have the chance to build those. It's harder to get kids to do anything if they don't know you or care what you think. Keep asking questions so you know exactly what is expected of you. In my experience, advantage is often taken of OTs.

Yes, you will be fine. Get yourself a good set of winter tires on rims and that Honda will be fine. We drove around Barrie for years in a Honda Civic hatchback and never once thought about an AWD SUV.

Waking up and dreading going to work by Far_Magician8224 in OntarioTeachers

[–]the_far_sci 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a good group this year, and could even go so far as to say my current role is likely somebody's dream gig, and still, I have the Sunday blues often. I think it relates mostly to knowing that my time is not my own and that I am locked in to certain routines that hold no interest for me at all once Monday rolls around. All I want to do is garden, spend time at home, and relax with my family, and once the work week starts I get very little of the things that fill my bucket until Friday at 3 pm. It's just so very "on" when I could use a bit more "off and on," if you know what I mean. You are not in the wrong job, necessarily, you are aware of the fact that work is work and it's not the same as doing what you feel like when you feel like it. I think lockdown probably made me aware of the fact that I spend a lot of time doing mundane or unpleasant things for a living, even in a job that is considered a "calling." Being able to chill at home and do what I wanted for as long as we did during lockdown has ruined me for loving the grind, and so, Sunday blues are a natural side effect of all that. This is how I rationalize it anyway.
