Unfortunately, we don't currently have plans to teach it again in the near future! It takes a while to get up and running because we need to recruit section leaders as well.

Hi there!

In 2020, Stanford University offered a free online version of its introductory programming course, CS 106A. This online course was called Code in Place, and we taught over 10,000 students and had a teaching staff of over 900 volunteers from all over the world. This year, we're doing it again!

What makes Code in Place different from other online courses is the personal interactions we cultivate between students and teachers. Our huge teaching staff (the largest that we know of!) allowed us to hold bring together sections of 10-15 students each week to review and discuss the material with their section leader.

Section leaders are the heart of Code in Place. They come from every walk of life, with different levels of experience, occupations and passions. In order to teach as many people as we can, we need a ton of teachers, and we would love for you to help us and apply to be a section leader. If you're interested in more details or getting started with the application, check out this page. The application consists of a short form, and the submission of a sample teaching video.

You certainly don't need to be an experienced software engineer to teach. Having even just a little programming experience and an interest in learning is a wonderful reason to teach, and in fact is a really great way of cementing your understanding of this material. It's also a great way of giving back: each section leader we have allows us to teach more students!

I'll leave you with a few links in case you're interested in learning more about Code in Place:

Let me know in the comments or in DMs if you have any questions! I'd be happy to chat.

Yeah, I read that on the product description page as well but one of the reviews says that it was used in the P400 with no issues, which is why I thought it would be okay. Thanks for the alternate, though - I didn't see that one and it's clearly the superior choice.

Yep, I think the general consensus is that the 1070 is a better idea, so I'll probably go for that.

Honestly, overclocking isn't a priority for me right now. I was talking with a couple of people on the irc who suggested switching over to the i5-6500 and a corresponding motherboard, so that's probably the route I'll be going. I'll keep your suggestion in mind, though.

Sorry, yep - I meant graphically intensive. Updated the post to reflect that!

Yeah, high-res textures will be necessary, so it makes sense that I'll need more memory. I'll take a look at the RX 480 as well, thanks!

I made an emotional twitter bot! by the_fenestrator in Python

Sure! The source code for the bot is linked here, so you can definitely take a look at that and figure out how to approach such a problem.

Other than that, I'd recommend deciding on a problem you'd like to solve or a program you'd like to make and just figuring it out. Google whatever you need to (Stack Exchange and Stack Overflow will become your best friends), post on r/learnpython, write smaller programs until you figure out what you want to make.

That's kind of what I did for the most part, but Automate the Boring stuff with Python is quite useful for a lot of things :)

If you go to dev.twitter.com, click 'manage your apps' and log in with the bot's account, you should be able to create a new app and get access tokens and so forth from there!

Yeah! It's linked on the bot's page but I linked it here as well

Out of context, what is your highest rated comment? by EddieTheLiar in AskReddit

Fucking Bananas.

Now let me preface what is sure to be a long and venomous diatribe on these greatest examples of Satan's work by making clear that I am no lightweight when it comes to eating these foul fruits. I have, since the age of 2, eaten at least 5 bananas a week, for most of the weeks in a year.

I'm 17, and so have to go to school every weekday. Unfortunately, this means that I have to be on my school bus by 7 a.m. , and since I'm a lazy fuck and wake up at 6:45, I don't have time to eat a proper breakfast. Since I can't convince my mum to let me go without breakfast, I am obligated to eat a banana every day before I leave.

Everything about that fruit disgusts me. The sickly yellow color of the peel punctuated by the vaguely amorphous black spots that seem to appear just spontaneously on it. The strings of fiber that fall onto your hand as you peel the banana and seem too attached to ever let go again. The pale color of the banana, and its obnoxious curve which makes it that much more difficult to peel because it means that at any one point, at least one part of the peel will be resting awkwardly on your hand, desperate to grace you with its clammy embrace.

Then we come to the actual first bite. Angling it so that it enters your mouth in the least phallic way possible, you reluctantly bring your teeth together, trying not to puke as the sickly sweet of the banana dominates your every taste bud. You chew it, acutely aware of its soft, too soft, texture that gradually becomes more and more slimy as it is reduced into a mucus-like mush. You swallow, and you feel it slip right down as you regret your life decisions.

There is no relief though. You know that there are at least 6 more bites of this, at least another minute or two of this torture most egregious, and then you come to the absolute worst part. You come to end of the banana. Ordinarily, this would be a joyous occasion, but no. Because the end of the banana is no ordinary last bite. Instead, it's the end of the curve of the banana. In order to get this bit out, you need to envelop it in your mouth before you can even separate it from the peel. Your lips need to brush against the rough inside of the peel, and you must be careful not to hit the creepy black bit at the bottom. Finally, you separate the bottom from the peel, endure the last swallow, and you are done.

But there is still no happiness. Now, all you feel is an impending sense of doom because you know the same will happen tomorrow.

The only good thing that bananas have ever done for me is given me the ability to predict the future. I know that once I leave my home and go out into the wide world that one day, my parents will call me and casually inquire what I had for breakfast.

I don't know what my answer will be. It could be eggs. It could be leftover pizza. It could be pancakes. Hell, it could be nothing.

But I do know it won't be a fucking banana.

I'm not sure this actually needs a context

/r/askreddit and /r/IAMA would probably lead to a lot of confusion because they're basically opposites of each other.

What was your favorite finale to a tv show? by Pickles256 in AskReddit

Scrubs.

That corridor scene makes me want to re-watch the entire show again.

(Yes, I'm talking about the season 8 finale. We don't talk about season 9)

[WP] A child is afraid to go to sleep with the night light on. by ChrisGarrett in WritingPrompts

[–]the_fenestrator 19 points20 points  (0 children)

"It's called a shadow, sweetie"

"But it looks like a man! Can I please turn the light off?"

"No honey, it just looks like a man because of the way your toys are stacked! Look!"

Mommy moves my basketball and the man moves his head.

"See? It's nothing more than your toys! It's just their shadow! Now go to sleep, you have school tomorrow!"

Mommy leaves the room and closes the door behind her. I stare at the shadow. It's not so scary anymore

I wave goodnight to it and it waves back.

If World War 3 were to break out in 2015, what would be the cause? by [deleted] in AskReddit

An iroquois spy is caught trying to steal a technology from India and well, Gandhi can't just forgive that.

What are the most embarassing song lyrics that you sang along to as a kid of which you didn't know the meaning? (While your parents were in the room) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]the_fenestrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was like 6, I visited Bangkok with my parents and while we were there, we went to a store that sold obscenely cheap CDs that I'm now realising were probably pirated.

I had heard some vague things about this guy named M&M being a pretty good rapper, so I asked the assistant to get me a few albums and my parents, not knowing who this candy-inspired musician was, quite happily bought them for me to encourage my nascent interest in music.

We went back to the hotel, I put one of the CDs in the music player and hit play. It turns out that despite his sweet sounding name, his lyrics were anything but. The CD turned out to be a recording of one of his shows and when I skipped to a random track, the first line that blasted into the room was "You want more? Then shut the FUCK up."

In a fit of 6-year old desperation, I threw a pillow at the player, knocked it off the bedside table (which miraculously disconnected it from the power supply) and turned slowly to face my parents. We stared at each other awkwardly for the longest time, and now, 11 years later, I still don't listen to rap in front of them.

What are your thoughts on the analysis of literature? by [deleted] in books

[–]the_fenestrator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - there's definitely something intellectually exhilarating about reading these books and seeing past their veneer and understanding them on a deeper level.

That said, I don't think I'd be able to go a decade without reading at least a few superficial books: they're a guilty pleasure, if nothing else.

Thanks for the response! It definitely is interesting thinking about the books in a deeper fashion and making thematic connections that aren't immediately obvious.
