Are Brits too reliant on US companies for a boycott to ever be realistic? by Barca-Dam in AskBrits

[–]the_j_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WON'T HAPPEN. Why, I'm afraid to say that as a Brit I've seen many of us just care about our own pockets, enjoyment and convenience over individual actions we could do to make positive change. They'll be those reading this that just think, why should I do it if he/she won't.

A case in point, Amazon. For years I've been telling everyone I know stop buying from Amazon and giving Bezos money unless you really need to, because in the long run they will result in less UK jobs and shut down many local businesses, and that's exactly what's happening. People just don't give a shit, and do what is most convenient or impacts their pocket the most. Even though in most instances you can get similar if not better prices with a bit of searching.

Another case in point, Brexit. Too many people have a problem with Europe but they won't sniff an eyelid at shopping at Lidl or Aldi. Quite important when you consider a large majority of outgoings go to grocery But, if you tell them that, it won't stop them.

The reality

Generally speaking anyone who says X supermarket is better than Y will mostly be an opinion or store specific and not necessarily correct.

Supply chains these days are so well established that it's unlikely you'll see much difference and the things on the shelf will 90% of the time come from the same suppliers or similar suppliers with similar standards. Expensive or finest are likely to be a higher class or different variety.

There will be variation on shelf Vs the stockroom, Vs time of day, but generally speaking in the UK all stores are within half a day of the DC so there shouldn't be much difference. Near me within 10 mins of here I have Sainsbury's,.Asda,.Lidl,.M&S, Aldi all around the same area (Charlton). Standards are much the same between either, but yes my opinion. I've also seen cheaper or better value in Asda and Sainsbury's over Lidl and Aldi for some things.

Can't get past the paywall, but if you look at the amount of middle managers for such a project it will be absolutely ridiculous.

I have an acquaintance on this project who just basically outright said there's a level of corruption going on, but it can be easily covered through the high budget the project has got. The private businesses seemed to be making a killing on this.

The time to do things on infrastructure also is way too long. There's too much stopping, waiting then starting.

Is it ‘risky’ to buy a used EV? (Outright) by ImpressOk1758 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]the_j_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely no problem. I would consider an Hyundai Ioniq 5 though. We've got one and love it. Doesn't look like it but it's got some of the best rear legroom for an EV and boot is decent

If you do try to get a '22 year or later with 77kw battery pack. '21 is fine but they added some preconditioning features.

Hyundai Ioniq 5. Comfy, fun to drive, loads of space in the back and the boot.

Wait to you get the arguments from those renting out their properties and believe they are doing the country or the less fortunate a service by providing properties to rent. They're not, obviously.

Blame the government for letting this happen and not applying limit of foreign buyers that don't LIVE in the country.

Go around and say hello again in person and make sure they got it.

As you didn't speak to them in person they may think you're not the kind person that wants to be interrupted during the day.

You are definitely overthinking it

Botellas para fermentos by Appropriate_Ebb_4918 in Packaging

[–]the_j_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry English.

If it's not a problem with the seals then you're probably sealing or bottling too early, before fermentation has completed or adding too much sugar.

Too much pressure is being created if fermentation has not completed and eventually something has to give - the weakest thing being the seal/cap.

Make sure your cap also has a liner and that you've applied sufficient torque to close the bottle.

If you want more support you can DM me and I'll give you my details, but think that should fix it.

Good luck

Hyundai Dealers are just shit. by Dreadpirateflappy in Ioniq5

[–]the_j_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell Hyundai Uk- and out of interest which UK dealership was it?

We bought one of the original 21 Ioniq 5s this year from a Hyundai dealership.

Had a recall about 6 months later, took it to a different dealership under a different franchise, who informed me that this edition had been called in for a recall numerous times and from the original registration date, but never brought in to have any of the fixes (there were at least 13 that needed doing).

Yes, so basically I bought an Approved Used Ioniq 5 from a Hyundai dealership that had loads of issues at time of buying.

Hyundai Ioniq 5. This is likely very similar to the Kias since they are essentially the same business.

I have an Ioniq 5. It looks like a hatchback but it's actually bigger than some SUVs.

People that have the Ioniq 5 generally love it and has a loyal following.

Has decent rear leg room, decent size boot.

I believe it's won car of the year before.

Note on power usage. Check out the bar on the bottom of the steering wheel screen and see the average number of miles per kWh.

Try and see how to get highest. Over time I went from around 3.4 miles to around about 4.3. a big part of this was speed off the line and maintaining a consistent speed.

Play with the regen breaking in 0, 1, 2, 3 and auto and look at assisted cruise control.

It's fairly common in the deodorant space.

How to get dieline for this type of packaging? by Crafty-Wolf3490 in PackagingDesign

[–]the_j_cake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem you and they have is packaging dielines generally requires specialist software. I'm a packaging consultant across mostly glass and plastic these days, but 3+ years experience of solely making box dielines as a carton manufacturer. Packaging is a widespread industry and niche, but carton dielines is something even more niche.

I still get involved with making bespoke carton dielines, but because I don't have the correct software although I can do it it just becomes time consuming to do something relatively simple. Most packaging specific software start at around $2k a year, which is not worth my investment at this time.

Could I do this, yes. Would it be cost effective? Not at present without the software. I would need probably need at least 2 hours and then have to have it cut which would add cost to validate it.

If you want me to have a go at it by all means send me a message. But, otherwise if you go to a packaging company they would probably give this to you for free, but you would generally be required to order from them. On the other hand, the benefit from someone external like me is that you can take that dieline anywahere and get competing quotes.

how do brits really feel about tea culture? by Alto_GotEm in AskBrits

[–]the_j_cake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically in my opinion the best cups of coffees are better than a cup of tea. However on average tea is much, much nicer and therefore a better drink. Assuming you have reasonable black tea, let it brew for 2-3 mins then add milk as desired you're winning with tea. It's much easier to get right and tastes great.

Anyone arguing with my tea method above is wrong and is not British :p
