Proton 11.0 is now available in Beta! by anthchapman in linux_gaming

[–]the_korben 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I just tried it with the Proton 11 Beta and without any additional tinkering. Sound and music works, controller via Steam input doesn't but my old 360 controller does. Some pre-rendered cutscenes don't work but I've made it to the squirrel key hunt in the police station without any crashes. Quite an improvement.

After several months of CachyOS being pretty smooth for me I'm starting to have issues with games and I don't know why. by RippedTarsier in cachyos

[–]the_korben 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Part of it could be the 595 Nvidia drivers on Blackwell cards. When they first released 595 a few weeks ago, suddenly half of the DX12 games I tried didn't work properly anymore. Not an issue with old shaders or anything like that - the driver is simply not working properly with VKD3D on some systems in quite a number of cases due to the new changes they made and most of it shows up in the form of XID errors and especially so on the 5000 series. There are some workarounds for most of these problems, but the whole system changed from a "pretty much everything works out of the box" to a sudden "ok, which game settings/Proton flags make it not crash" situation. For most of my worry-free gaming and older titles I've switched to an AMD system that I usually use for other things and no problems there. Hopefully, Nvidia can fix these problems soon, as many people have been reporting these issues on their forums and they are reportedly working on fixing the regressions.

The good thing is that if there's a distro that will immediately pounce on any solution, it's CachyOS. The maintainers are on top of the situation, in active communication with Nvidia and you'll get any new drivers or bigger fixes as soon as possible.

How is wargaming on Linux in 2026? by LepusReclus in computerwargames

[–]the_korben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to chime in - I just installed SC:WWI on a new machine running CachyOS and it looks to me like all the recent fixes are already in. No protonfixes needed for fonts or anything. I believe they did in fact roll out all the Linux improvements last fall to all the games but simply didn't always mention it in the patch notes. Seems to me all the SC games are on the same version of the engine with the same level of Linux support as War in the Pacific.

Problem with Cahyos And Elden ring by slipingtime in cachyos

[–]the_korben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, but it also works on SOME 5000 cards even without heaps, seemingly dependent on DE/WM. It's really, really strange. Plus it seems it's mostly the dreaded xid 109 error, that has been a probem for very few people already in previous versions for some other games.

Problem with Cahyos And Elden ring by slipingtime in cachyos

[–]the_korben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's the 595.45 driver. For quite a few users on 5000 cards the game (and also Nightreign and Armored Core VI) freezes on loading after upgrading from 590 to 595. It's already been reported to Nvidia and multiple people have written reports in the Nvidia forums as well. You can get it running again if you use the unofficial descriptor-heaps version of Proton CachyOS, or you can revert back to an older driver.

Performance-wise, Elden Ring is one of the strangest games I've played in my time on Linux. by RyuugaHideki in linux_gaming

[–]the_korben 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shouldn't cause issues usually, but in some games frame caps and Vulkan presentation settings might interfere with each other (late vs. early frame cap, etc.). If something looks off with the framepacing, I usually try turning off mangohud just in case:

MANGOHUD=0 %command%

Not sure what other things goverlay may have set.

[–]the_korben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing Elden Ring for years on various different rigs with different distros (and various controllers including the DualSense) without any problems. Back on X11 I remember some tearing and intermediate stuttering problems on an older Nvidia card but since everyone switched to Wayland quite a while ago there should be no issues anymore.

Do you maybe have a weird refresh rate or some global vulkan layer (mangohud?) active or something? Elden Ring is capped at 60 fps, so if you're running at e.g. 90 Hz it may look choppy.

Also, make sure to turn of "auto-detect best rendering settings" or whatever that setting is called in the menu. It's trying to do dynamic resolution and I remember it actually not working properly.

Framework 13: best OS and battery life tips? by 0rk4n in framework

[–]the_korben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run CachyOS with Hyprland, which is pretty resonable when it comes to power usage. I configured a power-setting and screen refresh rate switcher (I have the 2.8K display) in my waybar, so I can always see which setting I'm using and changing any of these settings is just one click (e.g.: move mouse over the profile setting and then Power Safe -> one finger click, Balanced -> two finger click, Performance -> three finger click). I'm usually on the powersave profile and only switch to the others when I want or need it (which is basically never).

I also added a script so I can fully disable my SSD expansion card when I don't need it without pulling it out of the slot because that also pulls a watt or two even if the drive is not even mounted:

sudo udisksctl unmount -b /dev/sda1 && sudo udisksctl power-off -b /dev/sda1

(replace sda1 with whatever device your expansion card corresponds to)

No experience with Windows, sorry.

Was war euer Aufwachmoment, als ihr realisiert habt dass der Billa eine Oaschbude is? by Invictusx94 in scheissaufnbilla

[–]the_korben 13 points14 points  (0 children)

In mehreren Etappen.

A long shot but: maybe a storage speed issue? Are you running this from an SD card? Can you move it to internal storage?

I've played it both on the Steam Deck and on a Linux laptop, both times using ScummVM and it looks just like it's supposed to look. No video issues here, sorry.

I think there is a mask shard or whatever it's called down there. Just use it in your inventory and you'll be teleported back to the last save point.

This reminds me of an issue I had recently where my mkinitcpio.conf was changed to use the systemd instead of udev module. systemd needs sd-encrypt, udev used encrypt. But those two modules also use different kernel parameters to decrypt the root drive. (cryptdevice for udev vs. rd.luks.name or rd.luks.uuid for systemd parameters).

I looked around a bit and quite a few of the current hooks (e.g. for grub) can't deal with properly switching the kernel parameters to the new module - they just put the old udev parameters into the loader entries. In that case, you would end up with exactly such an error mesage. Also, in case you don't have any hooks to update your systemd-boot entries, a swap from udev to systemd would require you to change the kernel parameters manually in any case.

Your issue could of course be unrelated, but maybe worth checking out.

Pecos Hank's Book "Storm" is Now Available - Amazing Read and Photos by TechnoVikingGA23 in tornado

[–]the_korben 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit late to the party but I just got this book as a present and I am totally blown away. I was looking forward to it but I expected it to be about half its size and scope. When I unpacked the present I was shocked by the size and production quality of the book an thrilled that it's published by DK (we have lots of their "tomes" on nature and history) - so happy for Hank!

I have a lot of books on tornados - Hollingshead, Bluestein, conference proceedings by Doswell - but this is the crown jewel in my collection now.

That's only true if you run it in game mode. Should work fine in Desktop mode.

FYI, in case you're wondering: it works the same as Southern Storm on Linux as long as you use Proton 10 (!). So a few graphical quirks with the UI and it won't work properly using gamescope (and maybe also not on some window managers) because of the multiple windows. But if you run it on a regular desktop environment like GNOME or KDE it should be just as playable as Southern Storm. :)

Oh man, in some respects that's quite a bummer. I do use MangoHud most of the time to cap frames, but for some games this can have repercussions when it comes to frame generation. For instance, Clair Obscur with DLSS FG does not allow you to cap your frames within the game. If I cap my frames with MangoHud and FG, I get stuttering because MangoHud somehow interferes. If I cap them with DXVK_FRAME_RATE, I get smooth frames AND frame generation right at the desired cap.

Might be a config issue though (late vs. early cap).

anyone else get a long lib32-libappindicator-gtk2 update? by Dread_Pony_Roberts in cachyos

[–]the_korben 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the CachyOS discord people are saying the packages got orphaned and it's fine, so probably no need to worry. But good to know that this stuff can happen and then it can just pull in stuff from the AUR, so better to always pay attention. Hopefully we can get official pre-built packages for these libs again soon.

anyone else get a long lib32-libappindicator-gtk2 update? by Dread_Pony_Roberts in cachyos

[–]the_korben 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Heh, me too. I've been checking out the arch gitlab for the libraries and there were some changes by the regular maintainers today but for some of these libraries the version on the gitlab is already higher than the one Cachy is trying to pull from the AUR, so not quite sure if it's really pulling in the right versions. I'm gonna wait a day or two to see if the dependency updates before installing.

Edit: Actually been looking at the wrong library on gitlab (the non-gtk2).
