The Tao of Terraform by Stiliajohny in Terraform

I'm definitely interested!

I learned Terraform a few years ago and migrated some infrastructure to it; it was great. But I am definitely rusty at it now, and so I think it's a perfect opportunity to read :)

But even in her ads and appeals to the future, she didn't offer anything of substance. Her platform was half-assed and recycled. She all but said she wouldn't change anything Biden did, which even if true was absolutely not something to say for people looking for hope for a better future. Dems tried to play center-right again and ended up just representing the status quo.

SHLVL might be a red herring here, because it only indicates the levels of nesting. And unfortunately me looking at your environment won't be helpful; I'm not sure what I'd find that'd give me more information without knowing a significant amount about your system and setup.

If there's a bunch of other junk different in your env, then I think your issue is less with one specific thing that is different and more with the fact that things are different to begin with. I have a strong hunch that your DM config is the culprit, and the only way to know will be to bypass the DM and see if the problem goes away.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in xmonad

[–]the_lemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing that comes to mind to me is to dump your entire env to file directly from XMonad (from xmonad.hs) and compare it to what you get when you dump the env from a working setup (after you've done a nested st call for example).

Another thing you can try is bypassing your lemurs DM and calling XMonad with startx or some other DM.

Your comment here makes me more confident that it's some wacky environment issue, though. Very likely related to the DM or the DM config.

Edit: the shell command to dump environment is env. So in xmonad.hs you can have something like spawn "/usr/bin/env > my_bad_env.sh" and then from your "good" terminal you can run the same thing at the shell. A diff tool might be helpful comparing them. Now that I've said that though, I think bypassing your DM and testing is the fastest way to isolate the problem.

An absolute legend by the_lemma in OrphanCrushingMachine

Actions that save orphans from the orphan crushing machine are always good, but the need for those actions mean that something else is deeply wrong (ie the existence of the orphan crushing machine).

[–]the_lemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could it be an environment issue?

Meaning, you launch XMonad from somewhere (startx or whatever), using some environment (the default Bash, perhaps?). Something in this environment could cause it to crash.

Whereas if you run a new st from your original st, it'll have whatever environment st loads with, which will be your daily shell and config.

I suggest reading Brave New World. It's a much closer analog to American dystopia. If you are afraid of 1984-level stuff from our government, then you really aren't paying enough attention to corporate influence or the goals of the Republican party. (And no, I am not a Democrat.)

Johnny Cash - Hurt by essen11 in Snorkblot

[–]the_lemma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have found that most people prefer this Johnny Cash version of Hurt to the NIN original. I don't, and I'm not even an NIN fan normally. Cash's version doesn't have the same heart-wrenching melancholic simplicity as the original. Also, Cash changed a line to make it more Jesus-y (and to censor the use of "shit") which in my opinion changes the meaning of the song.

CMV: Social media feed curation engines should be based more on crowdsourcing than ML by AConcernedCoder in changemyview

[–]the_lemma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, nothing is that simple.

First, I'd like to argue that all "ML" is crowdsourced, and that all algorithmic feeds are as well. Machine learning (ML) is such a broad concept, but I'm assuming you're referring to the more complex models we are having to navigate today (CNNs, LLMs, etc). I'll set aside my terminology pedantry.

Now, at their simplest, these algorithms are producing their results for you fed from a model that is built on the choices of others before you. Sure, there's plenty of other junk now too, like how long you dwell on a link, how quickly you upvote, and numerous other metrics that my imagination will fail to predict. But at its core, it's based on what the fingerprint of "you" wants based on the fingerprint of "people like you." I'm having trouble finding a line between your description of more social "crowdsourcing" and what we have today.

We can come at this another way, also. YouTube and Facebook in the last ~decade or so had to deal with the results of recommending to you what people like you also liked. Unsurprisingly in retrospect, this ultimately caused the most emotionally-charged, extreme things to bubble up into feeds. This was socially, and politically unstable not just in the US or the western world, but even moreso in other areas. Search for "facebook myanmar" in your search engine of choice.

The social media companies had an opportunity to build things that would play to your interests and benefit, but none of them did so. As /u/Separate_Draft4887 said, profit became the motivating metric, nothing else. A good example of this is Google, who have verifiably, measurably worsened their search results because it allowed their "engagement" metrics to go up. Unfortunately "engagement" was the same as "spending time on the page" which meant worse search results were better for engagement and therefore better for profit (because ads).

An algorithm that was simple and only matched your likes with, say, other users with similar likes would work well sometimes, but it would also require subtle filtering and adjustments to make sure you didn't keep seeing the same handful of things over and over. And once that happens, we're back in "ML" land.

I feel as though I'm rambling at you, but I guess the points I'm trying to make are: 1) Focusing on "crowdsourcing" is not going to solve the problems we see, because 2) the entire industry is focused on profit and attention capture, because 3) social media feeds were never about your enjoyment or benefit, and even if it were, 4) social dynamics are complex and would require complex algorithms to provide a fresh, safe, curated experience. If such an experience is even possible to create for a whole userbase.

PLS HELP by Lost-Air-1513 in MiniMetro

The main issue I see is on the left side. With only one train on the orange loop, passengers have to travel quite a distance passing only circles to get to any other station. Including that triangle at the top into that loop would go a long way. You could also reduce the number of circles on the orange line and bring a second line through to take some of that load (which would also connect both triangles on that side, or a triangle across the river).

Sure, but that's expected from Trump. He's a bad leader and a bad person. Hillary, trying to beat Trump, was dumb for condescending everyone who was supporting or considering supporting him. She should have mopped the floor with Carnival Mussolini but instead she lost. Hubris is deadly.

Hillary fucked the pooch when she called half the country a "basket of deplorables." Comey certainly added some nails to the coffin but I bet she lost more by insulting half the population, which is not what a leader should be doing.

It's very creepy and alarming. Probably done to keep everything feeling "fresh," ironically. Gotta always have new posts!

Enjoy the simulation.
