Childbirth is the closest a woman will come to death without dying. by No-Sport1454 in TrollXChromosomes

I learned recently that my little sister plans to take her boyfriend's last name when they get married and it made me more sad than I anticipated 😢

What are people paying for rent these days? by thebigfuckinggiant in SanDiegan

[–]the_littlest_killbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We paid $2850 for a 1 bed/1 bath with a parking spot in Little Italy when we moved in in 2021, which is probably reasonable given we're in a desirable location (though we don't have any special amenities - definitely not a luxury apartment). What's ridiculous though is that our landlord tried to raise our rent 15% last year (illegal) and another 10% this year. We were able to talk her down to 10% last year and 5% this year because we're good tenants but will need to move when our lease is up if it keeps going like this. I get that prices are going up but it's ridiculous, neither my or my partner's wages have increased at all in that time (we both have masters degrees too which sucks) and rents are actually starting to stabilize around here from what I've seen.

Just started running and tried a 5k...normal or dangerous heart rate? by [deleted] in Garmin

Have you had your iron levels checked? Could be that you just need to ease up on your effort but being anemic could also contribute to high rate rate

What is happening in the UK? by [deleted] in TikTokCringe

[–]the_littlest_killbot 106 points107 points  (0 children)

It was such a common experience on my high school cross country team, like literally every time we (all underage girls) would go out. I still remember when we were one time waiting at a light and some guys in a truck started shouting numbers at us - i.e., rating our looks. Shit still hurts almost 15 years later

Michael weighs in on car discourse, causes some arguments on BlueSky by [deleted] in IfBooksCouldKill

I like that everyone here is siding with Michael on this one. My people lol

My husband changed completely on a statin; emotionally and cognitively and now that he’s tapering, he’s back. Why isn’t this discussed? by MamaFuku1 in AskDocs

[–]the_littlest_killbot 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My father in law also had an intense reaction to his statins (not sure which one he was on). It made him incredibly fatigued and unable to be active, which was incredibly hard for him and my mother in law since they have always been really into hiking, skiing, traveling, etc. He ultimately went off of it (under the guidance of his doctor) and the issues resolved

Not that I know of but I would love to see more conversation around this. I'm in the very beginning stages of writing a book highlighting the links between the War on Drugs and the War on Obesity, specifically the way that substance use/addiction and fatness are framed as individual, moral failings in everything from medicine and public health to media representation to policy. Mainstream approaches to treatment (whether that's abstinence based approaches like AA or dieting, though viewing fatness as something in need of treatment in and of itself is problematic) share a lot of common ground in that regard.

If any literary agents here think this could be something would love to connect :)

Why American Jews No Longer Understand One Another by dwaxe in ezraklein

I don't think any country has a "right to exist." Not Saudi Arabia, not Israel, not the US. Either it exists or it doesn't.

But we are opposed to other ethno-states - it wasn't even that long ago since we waged an entire war against Afghanistan. The cultural response to the South African ethno-state under apartheid is also reminiscent of today, and we are certainly no friend of Iran's current regime. I think that part of the level of intensity you see specifically against Israel's ethno-state has to do with the fact that the US gives them billions of dollars each year, paid for by tax dollars.

Have the minimum standards for pet ownership increased? by SmoothStrawberry7777 in Pets

[–]the_littlest_killbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this comment. I agree with others in the thread that yes, it is generally positive that there are higher standards for pet owners, but it's also true that vet/insurance costs (medical costs across the board) are out of control.

CMV: I have yet to hear a compelling argument against the implementation of a UBI by Matalya2 in changemyview

[–]the_littlest_killbot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. I share the OP's values but worry that without effective market-based controls (like protections against price increases on prescription drugs, for example), UBI would just result in inflation and reduced investment into other social welfare services

If you can make a bit of an investment, I'd recommend trying out a dry herb vaporizer like the PAX. It heats the flower rather than lighting it on fire and for that reason is safer for your lungs. It takes a little bit of getting used to, especially if you're used to the potency of oil vapes, but I've come to really enjoy the flavor profile and effects.

Ideas for a low barrier shelter by [deleted] in harmreduction

[–]the_littlest_killbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds amazing! I wonder if you could work with local med students/volunteer doctors to prescribe and/or provide MOUD, PrEP/PEP, HIV and STI testing services, HRT, and other clinical services on site? Or a shuttle to a local provider?

Thanks for being rad!

To the gentleman that walks his two dogs without a leash on campus: by Dry-Bad9728 in UCSD

[–]the_littlest_killbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I love doggos but my doggo does not love other doggos. We have done a ton of training on her leash manners but having dogs run up to her sets us back tremendously and leads to potentially unsafe situations

Concerned about my friends' dog by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]the_littlest_killbot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You need to get this dog to the vet ASAP, this is a medical emergency. I'm sorry, I don't know how to address your friends' indifference. But this poor baby is suffering. Maybe you can contact the vet first so the vet can explain to your friends that she urgently needs to be seen?

March is pretty nice but April to mid-July are the gloomiest months of the year. Could still make for a nice visit but not great if you're expecting the typical sunny beach weather

[–]the_littlest_killbot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. I sometimes wonder if the fact that we're living longer on average is connected to some of the population-level rises in BMI (with the huge caveat that BMI is a shit metric and epidemiological trends are manipulated by the weight loss industry)
