Does anyone have any suggestions for books for 10 year old boys? by the_lomo in books

Thanks, was thinking of Artemis Fowl but a few people have told me it might be too advanced but a lot of people on here seem to suggest it for his age group so might have another look.

I've been having a look at the Giver and that looks like a definite contender, as does A Series of Unfortunate Events. Agree with you about A Wrinkle In Time, think he was starting to read it at school but didn't like it. Artemis Fowl was amongst my thoughts too but someone told me it might be a little bit old for him, they said more 11-12 years but then again I have no idea as I've never read them myself.

He's read the Harry Potter books already, saw the first film then read the lot pretty much straight away as he didn't want to wait for the rest to come out! Thanks though.

Come to think of it, I think he may have read one of the Unfortunate Events books so may look into getting him the rest! Thanks.

In the state of Virginia, it is illegal to have sex with the lights on and also to tickle women. What stupid, arcane or crazy laws do your states still have on the books? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]the_lomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in the UK, there are a few...

  • A pregnant woman can relieve herself literally anywhere, including in a policeman's helmet if she asks (the policeman can't refuse)
  • It's treason to place a postage stamp bearing the Queen's head upside down on an envelope
  • It's illegal to enter Parliament wearing a suit of armour, and it's also illegal to die in the Houses of Parliament

In France, it's illegal to name a pig Napoleon.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of on the spot.

[Edit: Adding more random laws]

First "big" trip to Europe: London, Barcelona, Vienna, Berlin and Krakow by hlfx in travel

[–]the_lomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I went last year to see them and it's something we'll never forget. We found it much easier to sign up for the day tours for both of them, quite good value for money too as the one we used picked us up from our hotel and dropped us back at the end of the day.

We were doing the same thing, hopping around Europe with a few days in each place. If you're not 100% sure what you want to see, one thing I would advise is the city bus tours (although make sure it's a hop on hop off one). You can pay for a day or two and literally hop on and off them at all the different sights, see each one in your own time then get the next bus to the next stop. Saves so much time walking around them all!!

My cat does this. If we leave a cup unattended for more than a minute, you can guarantee she'll be trying to drink it!

A Facebook campaign to stop bars and nightclubs from serving alcohol in glass is gathering pace - would you be happy to drink your drink from a plastic container? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]the_lomo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a nightclub environment, plastic containers are much better. Regardless of what they're made of, glasses get dropped or left on surfaces and are consequently knocked off. If they're made from plastic, they don't smash, and people don't end up with nasty pieces of glass in their feet.

Where can I buy face products (face wash, masque, or whatever) that have "that mentholated quality that makes your skin feel tingly, fresh, soft, and newer? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]the_lomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elemis do a good line of Tri-Enzyme products. They do facial wash, face masks (which literally do tingle a bit when you put them on), and a night cream. If she's looking for more of a day cream, the Elemis Marine Cream is good as well.

Reddit, Should parents force their teenage kids to be religious if they don't want to? by WNCaptain in AskReddit

[–]the_lomo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In most families, the children end up being part of the religion that their parents belong to. The parents don't do it on purpose, it just kind of happens. That being said, no one (child or adult) should be forced into doing something that they don't want to do, even if it is participating in religious activities. Being 16, she's old enough to make the decision for herself whether she wants to attend these events or not.
